Today in History: Molly Goes Bald and Trish Goes Bad

On this day in history:

March 14th, 2004 | WrestleMania 20 was a night of big changes. First, Trish Stratus made one of the most shocking heel turns we’ve ever seen, interrupting Chris Jericho and Christian’s match and “accidentally” causing Jericho to lose the bout. She apologized post-match, and seemed genuinely mortified at what she had done. Two wicked slaps later, she was suddenly one of the biggest heels in the company.

Later in the night, Molly Holly put her hair on the line for a shot at Victoria‘s Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 20, the stipulation stating that if she lost, she would get her head shaved. Victoria managed to retain her title, and thus Molly had to be de-tressed.

What are your memories of these moments? Tell us in the comments!

It seemed like in Molly’s later wwe career she was looking prettier! I wonder what it would have been like if Molly stayed during the diva search era?

    • ajfan83

The diva search is one of the main reasons Molly quit. So there’s your answer.

        sadly =(

didn’t quit because of the diva search she had a breast cancer scare. She said it in a interview and she has a dvd as well.

      • Jcott3

Molly has gone on record that the Diva Search had nothing to do with it. She had also said she was looking forward to working with the DS girls and said if it helped them find “the next Trish”, it was all good.

Molly’s departure was based on two things: 1) the breast cancer scare she had in January 2005. For a long time, Molly swallowed her pride and did a lot of things she didn’t want to in order to keep her paycheck coming. The breast cancer scare made her realize how unhappy she really was in WWE.

The second thing (and the straw that broke Molly’s back) came April 11, 2005. She had a meeting with WWE management and pitched the idea for her to become a face again (she absolutely HATED playing a heel). John Laurinaitis shot it down, saying “It’ll never work”. She immediately asked for her release and it was granted that night. Allegedly, Big Johnny didn’t even try to talk her out of it.

Loved the match vs Victoria, untill they started feuding in about 2004-2005 they didn’t really have any matches together. They had good chemistry, two awesome wrestlers.

  • DIVASKO

    One of my favourite Wrestlemania.

Great match!!! Molly rocks and Victoria does too!
    But wow dead crowd :(

And Trish turning bad whoa.. She likes it ruff!
She looks seductively and deliciously evil haha

  • Jake

Stacy and Miss Jackie vs Torrie and Sable?

    • redsandman99

I don’t know about anybody else, but I like to pretend that didn’t happen lol.

      • Ace Of Base

In a perfect world, it would have been nice to have all the top divas like Lita, Trish, Sable, Stacy, Torrie, Molly, Victoria, and Jazz involved in something together. The evening gown match was good for the guys who like their divas as their softcore porn….but anyway…Trish and Molly and Victoria saved it for the divas here. This Wrestlemania was pretty boring with a few exceptions, the three divas being one of them.

        • Jcott3

Overall, WM 20 was considered a lackluster card save for the main event.

      • Jake

I thought that match was entertaining. Personally I love the ending when Stacy yells “you lost to a roll up?!” to Jackie. lol

        • http://twitter.com/RyanRoman0 Ryan

I liked that match! It was actually entertaining haha
          A classy lingerie looking match
Torrie and Sable looked freakin beautiful and hot!

I have always wanted to see Sable take on Trish Stratus. It’s like a forever fantasy match of mine. :)

        • redsandman99

Part of me was surprised they never went with Sable vs Trish though I’m personally glad they didn’t. Never cared for Sable.

        • http://twitter.com/RyanRoman0 Ryan

          Sandman

Straight up Sable fan over here my dude
          Love Sable and Trish ;)

Would of been total awesomeness for me

  • lucky1now

I really didn’t expect molly to get shaved
They wouldn’t put a women through that and on tv at that!
    Well I was wrong lol

    • http://facebook.com/len.Houkamau Len

she wanted to be shaved this match was her idea because there was going to be no womens title match

  • jonboi

Back when Vince used ideas from the divas , this would never happen today unfortunately
Good match prefered WM18 & 19 triple threat matches, I had a feeling molly wouldn’t win But thought she,d hit victoria or somthing so it never happened Glad it did now!!

  • ajfan83

Sable vs. Trish would have been awful, although I guess for “star power” it might have worked. Funny that none of WWE’s top divas over the years ever wrestled a proper one on one match against each other at Mania, despite being on the same roster at various points. I know Lita/Trish was supposed to happen one year, but it didn’t. That pretty much sums up the division as a whole. Anytime they get something good going it just falls apart. Even this year they could have done a Kaitlyn vs. AJ match, to capitalize on AJ’s push and try to elevate Kaitlyn. Instead they will both be in filler tag matches.

    • redsandman99

I’m doubting AJ even gets a match. She’ll be at Ziggler’s side while Kaitlyn will either defend her title against Layla or be in something like her, Naomi and Cameron vs Layla and the Bellas.

      • ajfan83

You might be right. Just goes to show how WWE can take their most talked about diva in years and not even have a proper place for her on the card. She’s in the same WrestleMania spot as last year, maybe even lower.

    • Jcott3

I agree that Trish vs. Sable would have been a major letdown. Sable couldn’t wrestle and didn’t want to learn, and I think WWE intentionally kept Trish out of a match in order to keep the focus on her heel turn.

  • BillyGP

Trish heel turn was gold. Never a one on one match with two top divas at mania? Didnt Mickie vs Trish or am I mistaken LOL

    • ajfan83

Mickie was a WWE rookie when that match took place, genius. And she was never at the star level of a Trish, Lita, Sable or Chyna, no matter how much her fans want to pretend she was. Lita and Trish fans are by far the most annoying on this site, but Mickie’s are probably the most delusional. I think she’s always been more popular on internet forums than in real life.

      • Ace Of Base

Mickie was popular for her era, along with Melina. Not crazy over, but she was the most over diva at some point.

        • ajfan83

I can accept that. I just don’t think she was ever at a level where she could provide “dream matches”, which was what I was getting at.

      • BillyGP

You such a damn hater. Mickie was a star and a lot of people with in the buisness would consider Mickie at that level and her not being at dream match level is funny when even at that time she was. It was Trish who wanted to work with Mickie. Mickie fans just see things different from you. Hell the newest PWI magazine listed Mickie as the star of wrestlemania 22.

      • BillyGP

Mickie not popular in real life? Since when she gets good pops then and even now. Plus did the crowd at Mania get behind her? Also when she was released there was we want Mickie chants?

        • ajfan83

Yeah, Mickie is so popular she got fired from WWE without any sendoff and hasn’t been a regular on TNA in about a year. I’m not a hater, you are just a blind mark for her. I got news from you, most of the people in the business would probably tell you she’s nothing special and has attitude problems which is why she has wore out her welcome in not one but two companies. PWI magazine? Anybody read that crap anymore? So she had a big night at WrestleMania 22? So? All that proves is that she had one big night and that Trish was overrated as a babyface. One night does not make a superstar. The top divas have a little name recognition outside of wrestling. Nobody that doesn’t watch knows who Mickie is. That is a sign of star power, or lack thereof.

  • trishfan11

I loved it when Trish went heel. That year was my favorite year of Trish’s career and this was a great way to start it. Too bad these days, we rarely get such a big diva heel turn.

If anybody is good at lip reading, can you tell me what Trish was saying from the time after she slapped Jericho to before she kissed Christian ?

  • aldo

Just like Michelle Mccool, AJ and Eve several years later, a heel turn did wonders for Trish. Her promos were always funny. She was awesome.
And for Molly, there’s no secret that she is one of the most technical divas the WWE ever had. A true wrestler.
As for WM, the last top divas match was Trish vs Mickie right? Melina vs Mickie should’ve been at WM instead of Melina vs Ashley, then Michelle vs Mickie James never happened, instead WWE decided to end the feud in Smackdown. Obviously Trish vs Lita, because of Lita’s injury, then Beth vs Natalya (and I mean, a big WM match, with proper time and storyline).

  • JamieKym

Where’s Jackie and Stacy vs Torrie and Sable? I thought it was entertaining. Jackie Gayda was my favorite.

  • RaishaSaeedFAN

Don’t forget Torrie and Candice’s Playboy pillow fight at WM22,we got two divas matches with Mickie and Trish

  • Jcott3

I’ve always been a fan of Molly’s but I think she went too far with this. I know she did it because Vince was going to give the Divas spot to the Playboy Evening Gown match (a match that was rated worse than Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar that night) and she felt she had to do something big to get on the card, but after what happened to her in 2002, she could never survive another large-scale public humiliation angle – and she didn’t.

As for Trish, I was kind of surprised that she turned heel. She was so popular that I thought it would be impossible for fans to hate her, like Steve Austin. Thankfully, I was wrong. She was so deliciously evil during her heel run.
