WWE Superstars Redux (July 5th, 2013): Is There Such a Thing as Friendly Competition?

Hey everyone! Erin’s here, filling in for Jack again. Someone stop me before I write this whole Redux in the third person. On this week’s WWE Superstars, we’ve got a Total Divas collision as Natalya takes on Naomi. As they’re both babyfaces, this match seems set up to be good-natured competition. But will it stay that way?

Watch the match below:

Natalya is out first, accompanied by rookie Diva and fellow Total Divas star Eva Marie, who just so happens to be making her debut in front of the WWE crowd. She looks a like nervous, so it’s nice to see Natalya offering a comforting hand.

The announcers then mention Natalya’s recent wedding to Tyson Kidd, so I guess the cat’s completely out of the bag. It’s only a matter of time before she has to break it off with Khali! Poor guy.

Naomi’s out next, accompanied by fellow Funkadactyl Cameron. It’s kind of strange to see Naomi in her gear when Cameron’s in a floor-length dress, but kind of cool too. We don’t often get to see Naomi as a singles competitor, so it’s a bit of a treat.

Naomi enters the ring by launching herself over the top rope, which it itself elicits awe from the announcers. She hands her pom poms over to Cameron, and we begin the match.

Both Divas hype up the crowd before starting this babyface-versus-babyface match, tying up to start things off. Natalya immediately takes control, tossing Naomi to the mat and locking her in a headlock. Naomi uses her legs to free herself, latching them around Natalya’s neck in a headscissors.

Natalya immediately gets out of it, and the match doesn’t slow down from there: the Divas exchange attempts to take control, Naomi eventually catching Natalya in a shoulder-twisting submission. Natalya gets to her feet and tries to whip Naomi into the ropes, but it’s reversed. Natalya gets the best of the situation, though, knocking Naomi to the mat on the return.

Natalya runs the ropes, but Naomi hits the splits to avoid her, finally taking her down with a butt bump. She goes for the pin, but only gets two.

When she tries to pull Natalya to her feet, she pays for it, because out of nowhere Natalya drops her to her back, prepping her for the Sharpshooter. Naomi wriggles free, though, and misses a blow, getting slammed stomach-first to the mat and locked into a front face-lock by Natalya.

Natalya then hoists Naomi up for a delayed suplex, hanging Naomi upside down for a few seconds before dropping her to the mat. Natalya playfully goes for the pin by sitting on Naomi’s chest. Naomi’s having none of this, pushing her off. Natalya’s back on the attack, though, wrapping herself around Naomi in an abdominal stretch. After a few moments, she ups the stakes by taking Naomi’s right leg and wrapping it back.

Naomi manages to battle back, tossing Natalya away with an arm drag. She dropkicks Natalya, sending the veteran Diva to the outside. As Eva Marie gets Natalya to her feet, Naomi extends a friendly hand (or is it?), opening the ropes for her. Natalya slowly gets back on the ring apron, giving Naomi a bit of a death stare. Man, if looks could kill..

The tension breaks when Natalya gets back in the ring, as the Divas exchange friendly smiles and square off again. They shake hands, but Naomi takes Natalya off-guard, rolling her into a pin attempt. Natalya kicks out, but Naomi keeps on the attack, hitting some lightning-fast offense on Natalya capped off with a hurricanrana. She goes for another pin attempt, but Natalya kicks out at two.

Naomi goes for another attack but Natalya slips out of her grip. However, when Natalya tries her own attack, Naomi wriggles free too. Naomi misses a kick and leaves her legs prone, and Natalya immediately locks her into the Sharpshooter. Naomi drags herself to the ropes, but Natalya pulls her back to the center of the ring. Naomi has no choice but to tap, and Natalya is awarded the victory.

Naomi is a good sport, though, hugging Natalya post-match and allowing Eva Marie to raise her hand alongside Natalya. Look at that–a happy ending!

Thoughts: This match left me conflicted: on one hand, I loved the chemistry between Natalya and Naomi; on the other hand, it was too short! In a sense, it was a tease, because it showed us the kind of show-stopping match these two could put on at the Pay-Per-View level. Naomi is undoubtedly a star, and Natalya is always great. Their styles complimented each other perfectly.

The match was also helped by the babyface-versus-babyface dynamic, which allowed for the match to have a fun feel with a dash of tension when things seemed to get too personal. It will probably play off great if they show bits of it on Total Divas, giving non-wrestling fans a great example of what Divas can do though Natalya’s technical prowess and Naomi’s eye-popping athleticism. It also shows that Divas can have matches built on good-natured competition, not just catty hatred.

I’d pay a pretty penny to see these two face off in a full-on feud. Naomi’s energetic move set lends itself to a babyface persona, so perhaps Natalya could be the heel. Then again, a good girl-versus-good girl feud has its own intriguing possibilities. The bottom line is this: this match showed the kind of greatness the WWE could put on display, if they choose to tap into it.

I enjoyed the match and I don’t know if the crowd was dubbed in but there seemed to be a good reaction. The end for me was a bit blah, I’d have rather Natalya helped Naomi up because instead Naomi completely no sold the Sharpshooter, tapping out and sprinting back up almost immediately after!

  • shameronstar

This was a really nice match and to think if these 2 had a real full blown feud that they would tear the house down on the wrestling along! Also, everyone looked great and Eva has a presence to her that could translate to her being a star one day if both her and wwe are serious enough about it, and I love how Alex was really complimentary of everyone, so not only is he hot and also has good taste in divas:)

They need to keep eva with nattie until she become better in the ring& whats up with cameron #heelturn

    • Looking Glass

I was hoping Eva and JoJo might play into the match after the latter debuted with the Funkadactyls. I’m hoping they don’t come as a pair, then again I feel like they need to go through NXT rather than fast track.

    • shameronstar

When Cameron turns heel she is going to be a mess. wwe’s future Tamar Braxton right there ladies and gentlemen:D

  • divaindemise

It was good, if not great. And Cameron looked like the picture of diva in that dress.

  • shameronstar

Also, since they kept mentioning Natalya’s marriage to Tyson can they FINALLY separate Natalya from Khali and Hornswoggle! Maybe, they can just say that Natalya and Khali are just “platonic lovers” and everyone who thought they were actually “in love” were being silly and they just go separate ways after that:)

    • Looking Glass

I’m glad they broke it up but I’d have loved it to play into an angle where Natalya dumps Khali and humiliates him and Tyson makes a brief return (I know he’s got a long way to go yet to return) it just annoys me how WWE have pretended that ordeal had never happened.

  • mpezza

Match was pretty good, I really enjoyed the finish. Cameron looked stunning! I’m not sold on this Eva Marie girl. She didn’t really look like she knew what to do but I’ll just chalk that up to it being her first time out there.

    • Looking Glass

I’d say the same at the beginning but during the match she shouted support and her coming in at the end was a nice touch, you could see it was overwhelming for her but I think she got into it.

  • Nostalgia

Some other site has an interview with Eva Marie’s “fiancée” about her and it seemed iffy to me

    • Matty Ryan

She’s engaged? OH HELL TO THE NAW!

    • http://worldelitewrestle.proboards.com FOXY & FLAWLESS!

Yeah she’s engaged to someone. She posts pictures of them on Twitter often. I don’t know his name, but she refers to him as “Beast” because he’s so big and bulky.

      • http://worldelitewrestle.proboards.com FOXY & FLAWLESS!

Meant to say Instagram, not Twitter.

  • daniel05

if natalya ever recives another title reign i wanna see her feuding with kharma (if she ever returns)or Naomi.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wwestarlee wwestarlee

I kinda wanna see nattie fued with foxy or naomi or both imo

      • daniel05

i know i hope the use Alicia more so she can have matches against everyone before she leaves.

        • http://www.twitter.com/wwestarlee wwestarlee

I hope foxy doesnt leave anytime soon but def deserves a push

          • http://worldelitewrestle.proboards.com FOXY & FLAWLESS!

Sadly enough, both of them (Layla incldued) are reaching that maximum period where the Divas are either released or ask for their releases. I personally would love to see all 3 for a little while longer…I mean they all had one good push in their career (Nattie w/ the LayCool feud, Alicia w/ her Divas title reign, and Layla w/ LayCool) unless you wanna count Layla’s return as a ‘push’ but tbh, her reign was forgettable. I’d love to see them back in the spotlight at least one more time before they go out. Just once. They deserve it…they’ve stuck it out through a lot with the WWE, including that heavy period where Diva matches were an afterthought. It’d suck for them to go just when it seems to be heating up again. Hopefully AJ beats Kaitlyn @ MITB and ends their feud so she can go toe-to-toe with Layla, and if Layla’s leaving, she can go out in her final match being with AJ.

Very good match. Naomi is still a little spot-centric, but in a five minute match, she’s only got so much time to do anything anyway.

Eva-Marie’s presence seemed utterly pointless, but as far as standing at ringside and looking pretty goes, she did what she was there to do I guess.

    • http://worldelitewrestle.proboards.com FOXY & FLAWLESS!

How was it pointless? She’s untrained and definitely not ready to step into the ring. I’d much rather her WWE debut be escorting a Diva to the ring whether than some random male who she’ll never be partnered with again. And did you not see her acting as hype woman when Nattie locked on that Sharpshooter? At least she just didn’t stand there dull as daisies just looking on.

      • Monkey Tennis

“How was it pointless? She’s untrained and definitely not ready to step into the ring.”

        Question asked. Question answered.

  • Lushh

The match was better then i thought it was going to be but im surprised they didn’t get more time considering this was on Superstars but with the time allotted they did tell a story , which is something missing from most matches.

EvaMarie is so stunning , like seriously. She has that “Diva” mold and can definitely be worked with IF her heart and passion is there. Cameron was stunning too. I’m praying after the FUNK breaks up she sticks with Naomi a little while longer in a Chyna/The Kat type thing and then breaks off on her own.

  • charovnica

Eva Marie is a gorgeous girl,I just hope she’ll pick up wrestling..otherwise better release her.

The match was very good, but I never expected less from those two.I just don’t like how Nattie is basically pulling a Layla and cries tears of joy after every win as if she’s a newbie that just got her first win…WWE turned her into this.I want my bad-ass Natalya back.

    • Matty Ryan

She doesn’t have to be a wrestler, for all we know she can be the female CM Punk on the mic. Or if she is bad at that, she would be a great valet.

      • charovnica

WWE needs wrestlers at the moment,so I would focus more on bringing in girls that know what to do in the ring if I were WWE.

        • Matty Ryan

But they also need girls who can talk, if not you’re only gonna have good matches , which is not enough to have a successful division.

  • lucky1now

I would love to see more eva marie she’s gorgeous

  • kingbooman

Come on Wwe do a Heel vs Heel Match
    Aksana vs Rosa

    • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Please NO, we dont want a worst match of the year candidate!

    • Matty Ryan

Only if it’s: A.Catfight Rules B.In (enter liquid substance here) or C.Lingerie Pillow Fight

This may seem like a weird question but why don’t we get very many Face V Face or Heel V Heel matches? I feel like they make for some really interesting dynamics.

    • Monkey Tennis

I guess, on a basic level, people want someone to cheer for and someone to hate. Which isn’t to say that everyone will automatically support the face or give the heel heat. But having two wrestlers on opposing ‘sides’ adds to the illusion of aggression/competition between them.

Of the two options, face vs face matches are probably the more common. Sometimes out of necessity, because a roster is face heavy (as with the WWE right now). And with a face/face match, one wrestler can still become the aggressor, a kind of ‘temporary heel’ if need be, and still be a babyface when it’s all over.

Heel vs heel is tougher. In general, the only reason a heel would wrestle another heel would be if one of them was in the middle of a face-turn. Outside of that scenario though, it’s very rare. It’s one thing for a neutral audience to have two faces to support, but if the two heels are both as disliked as they should be (in the context of their characters) then it leaves the audience in a kind of limbo.

It’s worth noting that across Shimmer’s 50 plus shows, there has been at least one face-vs-face bout on almost every card. But aside from matches with multiple wrestlers/tag-teams, there has never been a heel vs heel contest (that wasn’t part of a turn).

  • MrMexican99

I thought the match was a little too slow. But it was alright :)

  • redsandman99

I enjoyed it. I would love to see them have more matches.

  • http://www.diva-dirt.com candice7000

I enjoyed the match. Naomi and Nattie are like the best. Eva is so beautiful. I would love her to be like that model underdog diva who becomes something as she goes further in her career. Cameron needs that heel turn we all are waiting for. But I feel no character change is going to be made until this first season of Total Divas is over, so the people who aren’t wrestling fans and wants to watch the wwe wouldn’t be confused. Cause I’d really love to see Cameron as a heel. I would want Nattie as a heel but I love her as a face too. So I’m torn. But wwe really need new heels. AJ Lee, Aksana, and sometimes Alicia Fox just aren’t cutting it. Tamina hasn’t returned yet and Rosa is never used. #MoreHeels

  • wweandtnadivafan

Eva Marie is extremely beautiful, like wow. I liked the match and Cameron can be an amazing heel just not yet

  • Wrestling.fan.from.France

This was a really good match, not a MOTY candidate but still very good! Naomi is really athletic and Natalya is a really good technician and strong wrestler which can always be good.

They have such a great chemistry in the ring not as great as the Alicia anf Natalya’s chemistry yet but still great and it was kind of a DREAM came true for us diva fan because they had a match on a house show who was dubbed as the best match of the year but unfortunately, nobody took videos :(

Also, is Natalya crazy? Did she ask some advices to Eva Marie?! This was really weird considering Natalya is the best on the roster and Eva the worst with JO-Jo according to the rumors but I can understand that.

Anyway, Cameron was GORGEOUS in that dress, same goes for Eva. She was really good at managing, she keep the crowd going, she was invest. so what else? But I’m still worrie about her. I know she has the look but is she passionate ? I heard about an interview of her “fiancé” saying that she has a lot passion for this and that she love wrestling but I’m convince about it! She looka like the girl who loove red carpet but don’t give a CRAP about wrestling which is scary. I hope she want it and I hope she is going to go on Nxt with. Jo-Joke before being a FULL-TIME main roster diva for like a year to prepare
    her with SDR themselves

  • SherriShepherdWWE

the match was exactly what you would expect from Naomi and Natalya if you seen it on paper, it was great

however, Eva Marie that girl is stunning, there is one camera angle of her, during the match, that i found she kinda looked like Megan Fox , damm girl, and i love the Fire Red Hair, i think the perfect gimmick would be like a Inferno (fire type) gimmick, kinda like Jemma Palmer on Gladiators type of thing

and also Cameron that dress, was hot damm

  • bananaleaf24

    Perrrrsonallly folks.

I dnt want Eva Marie to wrestle.
I want WWE to make her a modern day, Jessica Rabbit esque version of Miss Elizabeth.

  • Matty Ryan

First off it loved seeing my boo thangs (Alex Riley & Zack Ryder)!

The match was good, nothing special. I feel it would have been better if either Natalya was heel, or Cameron got involved. I said it once I’ll say it again, I LOVE Eva Marie! Everything about her is Red Gold! One thing I didn’t like though was Cameron in that dress, ugh that did not do her justice, her and Eva should’ve switched. But Naomi and Natalya need to have a match on RAW! Not Smackdown, not NXT, not Superstars, but RAW! I still hate the fake cheers.

I’m still hoping that we get a big divas segment on RAW with ALL the girls, that leads to either Vickie trying to save her job by adding a battle royal/ladder match (think TNA’s Makeover Battle Royal) or Stephanie making it. *Sigh* If only.

  • marcum1234

Loved the match, I’m hoping to see what went on behind the scenes during total divas since thats what these matches are most likley set up for.

  • Matty Ryan

Oh, I forgot. Where was JoJo? Why wasn’t she with her fellow Funkadactyls? Like seriously, they could’ve pulled a TNA and added lyrics (sung by JoJo ala Christy Hemme) to Natalya’s theme! Also Naomi & Cameron need a new theme, like I’ve seen them solo more times then I’ve seen them with Brodus & Sweet T.

    • http://worldelitewrestle.proboards.com FOXY & FLAWLESS!

As corny as it is, while they’re both faces, I think that theme fits them lol. They should just jack it and make Brodus & Sweet T get new themes, tbh
