Maria Kanellis: “Life After WWE”

Diva Dirt is pleased to have former WWE Diva and the First Lady of Ring of Honor as a columnist. Stay tuned for new blogs from Maria.

What’s up all you Stars and Studs!!

Life after World Wresting Entertainment. Instantly, most fans think of failure. Fans think of the death. Fans think of careers being over. It’s sad that some fans don’t realize for a lot of wrestlers LIFE begins after wrestling. WWE is a rough road. Four to five days on the road and two to three days off. Two days in your own bed, just think of that for a moment. Snuggling with your favorite Spongebob pillow in your comfy GI Joe PJs and eating Biancci’s pizza in bed only to jump on a plane and out of your warm home cocoon. Maybe, eight days in a month will be spent with the people, pets, and things you love outside of wrestling.

Maria in the WWE.

Maria in the WWE.

It’s amazing when the wild ride is happening, don’t get me wrong, but it is a Wonderland. Once you fall down that rabbit hole, time no longer exists. It’s an endless cycle of shows, travel, laundry tanner, gym, travel, shows, etc etc etc… You can’t have much of a LIFE while on the road that much. Most fans believe that my life is over after the WWE, but it isn’t. I still am at wrestling shows almost every weekend. I am going to school full time. I did two films this year, Army of the Damned and A Bet’s a Bet. Army of the Damned will be out later this year. I was a host for King of the Cage on HDNET, Code Red DVDs and Afterbuzztv.com. I learned to sword fight while doing a fight for fantasywomenbattles.com. I recorded music. I’m a spokesperson for paythefan.com. I am planning my wedding!! I am currently on TV for Ring of Honor wrestling. But, none of that matters to the WWE wrestling fan if you aren’t on WWE TV.

I often wonder why that is. Do fans just want you to fail after WWE? Are fans not really a fan of the person but of the company? Do some fans want your life to be over because they don’t want to think of you doing anything else? I get asked everyday when are you going back? Don’t you miss WWE? I tried to go back, I sent my EPK to WWE, but they decided to not move forward with the storyline. Politics at WWE is a two-faced blessing and I am thankful to be working at Ring Of Honor. (I’ve almost been there for 2 years!!) I’m now happy to be moving forward with my life but I feel as if WWE fans aren’t ready for me to do so. They want to hear more about the Bella twins debacle. They want me to insult the girls that are on Total Divas. But, the truth is I have a lot more on my plate that what those chicks are up to or the happenings at WWE. Also, I don’t stay angry for that long. It’s bad karma and there are too many beautiful, positive people in my life to worry about the people that hurt me.

I don’t know what the answer is to make people understand my main goal in life has nothing to do with twins or to make people understand LIFE is good even without WWE. I will tell you this: when fans tell me I failed, it saddens me. I am sure that so many former WWE wrestlers feel this exact way. Because our lives aren’t over. I’m not dead. And I most certainly am not a failure. What is so great about WWE? The fame? The money? Or the traveling around the world? I guess all of it is great but to me it was just five and a half years. To me it was not the greatest or the worst experience in my life. I’ve lived for 25 and a half years without WWE and I would like to live at least 70 more. So, in the grand scheme of things my time at WWE is just a fabliau in my life and to ruminate on it is to live in verisimilitude.

Maria in ROH.

Maria in Ring of Honor.

So, many of my wrestling friends are starting to move forward as well, getting the dreaded “real” job, going back to school, having kids, and getting married. Some are still in wrestling and wrestling on the independent circuit. Most former wrestlers get to a point when it is time to move forward and become part of society. It’s scary and for the most part it is unexciting which is so far from what wrestlers are used to. BUT, there is a certain glow that emanates from wrestlers after WWE because it’s almost like you have survived a run in with the evil Queen and you still kept your head. I have shed a lot of tears this year, especially in February when my contract from WWE got pulled, for my old life as a Diva. It hurt and I felt like my life was over but I quickly learned that I still have so much left to offer. So, I picked myself up out of my puddle of useless tears and got to work. I am studying film and hope to make a transition to one day be behind the scenes, in wrestling. My road with the WWE may be over, but I still have a lot of road in my journey in LIFE.

Yes, this entire blog is a contradiction because on one hand all entertainers want to be in front of the massive crowds, but on the other hand, submitting to the political landscape of any major corporation such as WWE is draining. What I have concluded from this intense feeling of hypocrisy is that it is best to love what is good for us and not just what is only in Wonderland. WWE will always have a special place in my red heart but luckily I have a lot more space in my heart for LIFE.

With respect,

i respect maria, always have, always will, no matter where she is. people can bitch about her but at the end of the day she isnt a train wreck, she isnt out doing crazy things shes a real person and i like that

    • http://twitter.com/lostmikeys Kaledrina

oh, totally. and the more i think about it, maria being released when she was is almost one of them blessings in disguise. she was and is young enough to do what she’s doing now: go back to school, get re-educated and effectively start her professional life all over again. fuck having to do all that if she was released in her mid-30s =/

  • Bruno Santos

    AWWW I loved this interview.
I will always love my QUEEN Maria kanellis.
    #TheFirstLadyofROH

  • James is A

I love Maria respect her so much. She was sterotyped as the “diva search reject” yet she managed to hold her own against sarah del rey in ROH. She could of worked on her clothing line or her album but NO she trained to be a wrestler.LOVE HER SO MUCH

  • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

I just love Maria’s passion for everything she does in life. You can tell she is the type of person that wants to enjoy life and make the most of everything life has to offer her. She seems to be in a good place in her life right now, and she’s very appreciative of everything that’s going on in her life as well. A Maria return to WWE would have been great, but I am happy that she has decided to move on from that and look at all the other things in her life that are going for her. I have so much respect for Maria because she has a lot of heart and passion. At the end of the day, all she wants is to be happy, enjoy life, and make a difference in the world.

  • HOLLA

Love Maia love her blogs! Motivation!

I want to hear more about the movie & you working alongside the wonderful Thea Trinidad AKA TNA’s Rosita!

Although I agree, over the years I have seen many “diva fans” put down the female talent when they move on from WWE.

People saying that WWE was only a stepping stone for them & hoping that they fail with their future projects, this is plain disrespectful, all these people are contributing & working harder than we can imagine for our entertainment purposes, there is no need for this negativity.

Anyway, I’m glad to hear that you’ve been doing so well & making the most out of positivity, you’ve always been a joy to watch!!! ?

    • http://twitter.com/lostmikeys Kaledrina

“Although I agree, over the years I have seen many “diva fans” put down the female talent when they move on from WWE.”

it’s an odd behaviour. it’s almost like when you discover on your own a really cool new band or singer. and you love love love them. but then they get some major exposure and all your friends find out about them and they start loving them, too, and you hate the band/singer and hope they split up/retire and never ever tour again?? LOL.. we almost want to destroy the things we love? so we don’t have to share them with others?? meh idk, i’m just rambling..

      • OJ Von Erich

You know what the funny thing is… I totally get what you’re saying!

      • ???iig?????

not for me. i just really miss the talent. or want them to return
        or go to TNA

    • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

It really is disrespectful. I mean, why is it that people only root for wrestlers to succeed when then only wrestler? Why can’t people root for wrestlers to succeed when they retire and do other projects? That’s like I remember there was an article her on Diva Dirt before about how Stacy Keibler feels that everything in her life, including WWE, was a stepping stone. She wasn’t saying it in a negative way, and she did mention how she had great years with WWE and loved the business and the fans. However, people here on DD were being too dramatic and took it as if she had no passion for WWE and never wanted to be there. If people had paid attention to what she said and understood what she said, Stacy was meaning that she feels that it was time for her to move on to other things in her life aka going from one step to the next.

      • OJ Von Erich

I know right & she was the one who turned down a title run in honour of giving it to the girls who were harder working & more passionate…

So much respect for Stacy Keibler!!! XD

        • Catalina

^ This, gain so much respect for Keibler for that.

        • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

Same here! And even she admitted in an interview before that she knew that she wasn’t the best wrestler in the ring. But I’m not gonna lie, as a fan of Stacy’s, I honestly wouldn’t have minded if she had gotten at least one run with the title, even if the reign had only lasted a month or two. Plus, we’ve seen way worse people hold the women’s championship *cough* Harvey Wippleman *cough*

          • OJ Von Erich

Oh yes of course, I think a Stacy run with the title could have been great! =)

          • Brandon Christopher

This is Sports Entertainment. We’ve seen plenty of performers in the ring who aren’t the best wrestlers. Vickie Guerrero, anyone? I mean I thrived on watching Vickie in the ring. The Hog Splash was pure gold. Stacy, in the ring? The leg extentions, the cartwheels. Maria brought the gitz and the glamour, not to mention she had a lot of heart. And you can’t train anyone to have heart.

          • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

Sometimes the best people in the wrestling industry are ones that bring the entertainment factor to wrestling. The people that you mentioned (Vickie, Stacy, Maria) are among other people that brought an entertainment factor to WWE. And even Maryse (by the way, I love that photo of her as your icon) was someone that brought an entertainment factor to WWE with her wonderful mic skills and charisma.

          • Brandon Christopher

Oh I agree with you 100%. (I absolutely adore Maryse, even now. I am sacrificing lambs for her return. Lol) I think people get so invested in wrestling skill, that they forget we have female wrestlers who never got to shine 100%. Molly Holly, Jacqueline, Gail Kim…all of them were fabulous wrestlers in WWE, but never were promoted to the lengths of Sable, Trish, Lita, etc…who were all entertainers trained to be wrestlers. It involves so much more than wrestling ability (but wrestling is an important part).

        • BorisG

          Exactly.

      • Brandon Christopher

I think quickly divides the bandwagon fans from the real diehard fans.

        • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

It does. If you’re a REAL and TRUE fan of someone, you should support them, want the best for them, and wish them all the happiness and success in the world.

          • Brandon Christopher

            Amen!

  • http://twitter.com/lostmikeys Kaledrina

it must be weird going from a huge, wwe star to almost.. well, a nobody over night. i guess it’s almost like being a former child star? except you’re not a child lol.. you’re a real big deal and then one day you’re not! and, well, we all know a lot of those “child stars” go off the rails (bynes, britney, lohan ..to sunny, chyna, massaro!), so having to re-adjust to ‘normal life’ must be super tricky but you seem to have done really well adjusting and that’s great :)

    • Magicimpact

      What happened with Ashley?

      • http://twitter.com/lostmikeys Kaledrina

drugs, prostitution, constantly no-showing events (as recently as just last weekend!). after all this time she still seems to be a bit of a mess and it’s a shame

        • XavierSkyy

She talked about it on twitter and said that her promoter lied to her and it fell through

  • XavierSkyy

I feel bad for Maria sometimes. It has to be hard that no matter what she does she gets so much hate, and can’t even move on.. I have so much respect for her and I hope to see her get even bigger in the future.

    • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

Nothing but a bunch of jealous people that wish they could be as beautiful, smart, and talented as she is hate on Maria.

      • Brandon Christopher

Well said, Maria worked very hard. She might not be a wrestling master, but she could and still can put on a show. This is sports entertainment, having the ability to wrestle is only 50% of it.

      • Hawky

No one’s jealous of maria..thats such a good laugh

      • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

Maria comes off as a very bad person , that’s why so many people talk about

        • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ Eric Holt

When I said that, I was talking about the people that doubted that she could be anything she wanted to be and accomplish her goals and dreams.

        • Gavin Lopez

How does she come off as a bad person? She’s not the one who stood in the way of someone trying to make their livelihood. The Bellas are the ones who seem like absolutely horrible people to anyone who isn’t a blind WWE mark.

    • Mariah_Scarey

She gets hate because she comes off as petty every time she attacks the Bellas. I’m not a Bella fan but she always comes off like a hater.

      • XavierSkyy

I can see where that comes from. But I notice that people will always side with the one in WWE. The only people I’ve heard say negative things about Maria are people she has made it clear she wasn’t find of either. And people should have put themselves in her shoes when her WWE return fell through. She had the opportunity to make a 5-6 figure paycheck traveling around the world, and it was shut down because of them. (And these weren’t random accusations she made it clear that her friends within WWE knew this) If I was in her position I would definitely lash out and be angry, as would anybody. That doesn’t make her “bitter” or “unable to move on” it makes her a normal person. Granted, none of us know either of them. Maybe Maria is bitter, or maybe the Bella’s are catty, But we only know what they tell us and Maria has been a lot more willing to spill beans then what they have.

      • Gavin Lopez

She simply told the truth about the Bellas. If you have too much of a hard-on for those bitches to handle it, then that’s your problem, not Maria’s.

        • Mariah_Scarey

I’m gay so…. No. If i would have had a hard on it would probably be for Mariah, since her body is shaped like a ruler, it’s much more masculine than the Bella’s. But anyway, Hop off Maria’s dick, she’s messy. Get over it.

          • ???iig?????

Who is the Pretty Girl in you’re avatar|?

  • http://noreallyitstrue.wordpress.com/ AdrianRay

Loved the article. I’ve always respected Maria, and quite honestly believe all she’s had to say about the Bella’s. It’s good that she’s moved past that, though. Reaching WWE is plenty of peoples life goal, but it’s not everything.

    • Brandon Christopher

True story, I’m always happy to see wrestlers have outside interests. Sometimes all we every get to see are their wrestling personas. It’s nice to get to know them as everyday people.

  • wrestlingfan9218

I don’t remember any fan ever telling Maria to imply that The Bellas are sluts, to claim that they were the reason why she never got back into the WWE, to ask people whether she should leave ROH for either WWE or TNA, etc etc. I can’t help but laugh at this blog because she wants to blame everyone else for her crazy tirade instead of looking at herself in the mirror and realizing she was responsible for her actions. If WWE just ignored her wouldn’t her claiming that The Bellas forced her out be a lie? So she lied to everyone for at least a good couple weeks. And another thing. MANY fans have done nothing but support former wrestlers with what they do post WWE. Just look at Trish Stratus for example. Hell Lisa Marie Varon’s restaurant is being promoted on this very site. So don’t tell me the fans WANT to see you fail, Maria. That’s a load of bull. You don’t have to be in the WWE you just have to be a decent enough person with passion. You may have passion, decency though? Hm… Whatever. Enjoy your life.

    • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

I want to like Maria but I can’t . She can’t sit here and say how the fans only want her to talk about the Bella’s when she’s said numerous times on twitter that she was gonna blog about the situation with them.

  • Cesaro’sWifeyEM.

Been a fan of Maria’s since Outback Jack. Love her and always will!

  • Foreveryoungx

I do respect maria as a person but you can’t get mad at people for constantly bringing up the whole Bella Twin thing when for months all you did was tweet about how you were going to write a blog exposing them which you have yet to do. So it kind of makes you seem bitter from the outside looking in. I personally don’t find you bitter because I don’t know the full story between the twins and you but others may based on that.

    • http://noreallyitstrue.wordpress.com/ AdrianRay

Diva Dirt might not allow it to be published on their site.

  • DivasChampAJ

Maria if you are over it why do you always talk about it on Twitter?

    • Gavin Lopez

She never talks about it unless asked. As an AJ fan, I would expect better from you.

      • DivasChampAJ

        AW im sorry. :(

  • OH SNIPPITY SNAP!

I still find it wrong that they pulled her contract for no reason… I miss her coming out with “HERE SHE COMES AGAIN” “HER LEGS GO ON AND ON FOR DAYSSS” if the bellas did tell WWE not to hire her then that’s on them. But maria deserves respect.

  • Ryan

I do find it fishy that Maria hasn’t even said how The Bellas were responsible for her being rejected by WWE. We’re just supposed to assume that because Nikki’s dating John Cena that means she has all the power do do whatever she wants?

I just think if you’re going to make such a bold claim against someone you should at least be able to back it up. You haven’t even named who the other two divas are that The Bellas apparently blocked, how come no one else except you has even mentioned this? It would be pretty scandalous if you just made this rumor up to ruin their reputation and now that you accomplished your goal you’re dropping it.

Also The Bellas did respond to what you said (bet you didn’t see that coming). They said don’t have the kind of power you’re claiming they have.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpdx_pwnZH8

    • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

I don’t believe the Bella’s have that much power backstage . If they did then I’m pretty sure management would let the girls wrestle longer matches and also instead of having AJ on the mic every week it would’ve been Brie .

Tbh I think what really happened was that wwe was gonna bring back maryse , Maria , k2 and the Bella’s but then marsye and k2 decided not to sign so they had to drop the storyline for that and dropped Maria because they wouldn’t have anything for her to do since the Bella’s had started feuding with Caomi .

      • Gavin Lopez

Triple H hates women’s wrestling and doesn’t think it draws, that’s why the divas dont get more time. And it has nothing to do with the Bellas having tons of power, which they most obviously do to anyone who isn’t putting their mark blinders on.

        • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

Ok so if the Bella’s have soo much power why haven’t neither of them won the divas championship yet ? Why is AJ the main diva that is allowed to talk on the mic? I’m pretty sure if Brie and Nikki had some type of power wwe would’ve did the same thing they did with laycool. They would be the ones with the belt , they would be the ones that get to speak every week & they would be used as the main draw instead of AJ

          • Gavin Lopez

Because they don’t draw ratings or cut good promos. AJ does.

Even being pet projects, it’s obvious that the Bellas aren’t over, and they talk like monotone robots when cutting promos.

And one of the Bellas did hold the Divas title, before they left WWE the last time.

          • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

laycool didn’t draw either & michelle was horrible on the mic but they were at the top of the division for a long time so that’s not much of a excuse.

          • Gavin Lopez

Michelle was thought of as being great in the ring. And she was dating/engaged to Undertaker, who has even more power than Cena.

  • amberindia

The management thought Bellas were more marketable than Maria!! End of story! Bully Maria, why don’t you pick on Triple H, Stephanie, or Vince?

    • Gavin Lopez

If that’s the case then they’re wrong. It’s more likely that they sucked up to the right people. LOL only an idiot would be a blind fan of those uber bitches the Bellas.

  • Lilreuche ?

I really like Maria, she’s not the best wrestler but i can tell she’s a fan. Idk i think i feel a kinship with fans that turn into wrestlers, like The Rock, Aj, HBK, and Stacy.

I do wish that she would tell us what happened with the contract thing..it doesn’t seem like Brie would be the type to block somebody’s contract. I feel like Nikki would be the type to do that…

  • BorisG

    Wonderful blog Maria.

  • Brandon

I liked this blog and it wasn’t gigantic so it was readable for me. I’d be totally ok if she came back. Wwe could use all the Dias they can get.

  • Brandon

I actually believe the Bella’s were the reason for her not returning. If I had an enemy trying to join wwe…I wouldnt ruin their opportunity and tell wwe to not sign them. It Would cause way too much Tension and Thats Exactly what happened here. It’s like ruining someone’s dream…and for most wrestlers going to wwe is a huge dream!

    • Gavin Lopez

Of course it was the Bellas. Only a blind WWE/Bellas mark would even attempt to deny it. They have more pull than any other women in the company, aside from Steph and Michelle McCool of course.

  • LeaTHeartsWWE

    Thanks for the article :/
