Today in History: Miss Kitty Wins the Women’s Championship at Armageddon 1999

On this day in history:

December 12th, 1999 | At Armageddon 1999, Women’s Champion Ivory was less than pleased to be defending her title in an Evening Gown Swimming Pool match. Her opponents Barbara Bush, Jacqueline and Miss Kitty were less appalled. The Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young were there to officiate the match and mourn their legacy. Jacqueline was first eliminated, followed by Barbara. Almost too easily, Kitty then stripped Ivory and became the new Women’s Champion. The new champ then took a celebratory dip in the pool sans-dress, topping it all off by taking off her top. The Attitude Era, ladies and gentlemen!

Also occurring today in history:
* 12/12/93 – Alundra Blayze defeats Heidi Lee Morgan to win the reinstated Women’s Title.
* 12/12/04 – Dawn Marie defeats Miss Jackie with Charlie Haas as the special guest referee at Armageddon 2004.
* 12/12/11 – Kelly Kelly wins Divalicious Moment of the Year at the 2011 Slammy Awards.

    Nurse BB! ?

This was also the night of the Stephanie McMahon heel turn!!!

  • charovnica

Gosh…how did Moolah agreed to participate in this will remain mystery.

  • Brandon

    Yikes…poor ivory lol

  • Will

    What a disgrace to the Women’s Title….

    • jcott3

I’ve wondered why everybody complains that Miss Kitty and Kelly Kelly got to be champion, but these same people are also the ones who whine that Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson never got to be champ.

      • Will

        Torrie Wilson could wrestle though…

        • jcott3

Depends on who you ask., but I’ll give it to you that she was a much better wrestler than Stacy ever was.

  • Will

LOL at Ivory thinking the pop for BB falling in the pool was for her! That was so messed up!

  • BorisG

The disgrace day to the women’s division, even later when she lost to Hervina. She was popular but that doesn’t give you title immediately. Such messed up times.

  • Mama_Joyce_Wig

Miss Kitty winning the woman’s championship is equal to the Bellas wining the Divas championship, un talented women that got the most prestigious award for a female wrestler in the wwe for their looks alone. Disgusting.

    • jcott3

Halleluah! I regret that I can only give this comment one thumbs up. Kitty was never anything but a glorified stripper who only got hired because she was dating Jerry Lawler, and even that wasn’t enough for her to keep it.

  • ????? KING ?????

All this Miss Kitty hate so thumbs down begin she was one of my favorite divas of that era and she was the most popular diva til Lita start to get her shine she may not have been a wrestler at this point but she was entertaining even after this angle with Chyna the different color wigs and outfits etc she was kind of doing the whole Katy Perry Lady Gaga thing before it became popular

    • charovnica

Katy Perry looks a lot like her :D

      • ????? KING ?????

A lot of her wigs and costumes worn during her last era came from Miss Kitty but no one will accept that but they will deal

  • WweRules32

    loved miss kitty

  • AdrianRay

There was still more effort put into the product at this time then we could expect now…which is sad.

    • charovnica

Not really. If you call stupid gimick matches [and not the cool ones like tables or chain matches] and oversexualizing a better threatment… People cared about the women at this particular point just cause they were almost naked everytime they got out there. There was no clear direction either. The talented wrestlers were pushed to the back in favor of the bimbos. Chyna switched things up and opened doors for more serious workers.

      • AdrianRay

When compared to screen time and overall character development…I stand my ground. Nice paragraph though…

        • charovnica

Well more time doesn’t neccessarily mean better product.

  • Half Of Me

I enjoyed the kat..by the end of her career she was improving & really showing that she was capable of actually wrestling….i still don’t know why tori was a manager she was close to chyna’s size & yet was out from an xfactor…chyna & jericho was amazing….

First can we talk about how awesome the WWE was back then? Just watching the first 8 minutes of this video reminded me of WHY i fell in love with the WWE and wrestling in general. So many diverse characters, despite having Austin, Rock, & HHH each character mid card or not had a build up to them. There wasn’t just one tag team receiving reactions, basically every tag team got reaction & not “WASSUP (insert city here)” type reactions. Commentary was amazing, they talked about what they were supposed to i mean they always geared off topic a little but it was still not too much. ANYWAY that was enough of my walk through glory road.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW WELL EXECUTED THIS MATCH WAS?
Even though it was basically a sexist , chauvinistic match it was executed to perfection. Each Diva got a chance to shine & had their own story and character. The best part was that commentary actually seemed to focus on selling each superstar instead of just praising one the entire time. One of my favorite things about the attitude era was that it seems that even though there were a handful of actual Divas they all had purpose and storylines. Even though some weren’t capable of being ring generals like Jacqueline and Ivory, they weren’t pushed to the side they managed and were involve in other things. I loved The Kat back then and have been wishing for a current crop of Divas to kinda have the Chyna/The Kat type storyline. I would love to see Cameron and Naomi do this. With Naomi being the champion and Cameron being by her side for a while & then Cameron getting more and more spotlight until Naomi turns on her or something of that nature, if not vice versa. UGHHHHHHHH so many possible uses for the Divas & the WWE gives us the bare minimum.

      will you marry me lol

      • @KENLushh

        YES YES YES!

    • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

      ^^^^^^THIS
I remember growing up and happily watching a whole episode of raw. Now a days I flip through channels until someone on diva dirt mentions that the divas are on . It seems like wwe strategy to put over stars is to push certain people to the top and completely bury others so that way the person they are trying to make a star gets over easier. And half the time the person their pushing isn’t all that entertaining .

  • Anthony Gutierrez

The Kat is by far one of my all-time favorite divas. She is the epitome of giving a diva a character and running with it! She had a gimmick that so many women have had but she played that character and the crowd LOVED her. Its such a shame that we never really got to see how good of a wrestler she actually became. If you look through her matches, she had an 8minute Womens championship match against Ivory at a house show right before her release and you would’ve never thought The Kat and Miss Kitty were the same person! There will never be another like The Kat and im dying for her to make a return.

    • jcott3

You don’t want to see her back on WWE TV, not without a lot of lead time to get her ready. I saw her at a convention in 2012, and let’s just say she has not aged well, especially for someone with her persona.

      • Anthony Gutierrez

i honestly don’t think she looks that bad! But sadly i guess i have to agree with you. Ppl with those types of gimmicks get played out after a short period of time so itd be like shes a 40yr old mae young

  • Anthony Gutierrez

but how awesome was Ivory!! THats one woman who truly loved what she did and you could really see it! Im glad that WWE gave her proper reigns with the championship and that were well-deserved. If only Luna had gotten the same consideration

    • jcott3

The WWF management wanted to give Luna a reign as champion, but Sable refused to drop the title to her.

  • Will

And after Madusa/Aludra Blayze got fired. Alundra Blayze’s matches with Bull Nakano, Bertha Faye, & Luna weren’t like the….for lack of a better term, boring matches in the 80s. Those ladies went out there and had some ENTERTAINING, hard hitting, high flying matches. OMG at the Survivor Series tag in 95…..AMAZING!

  • redsandman99

    That was…well that was something.

  • JJ?

*waits for another “worthy enough to be Women’s Champion” comment in the near future, so this video can be posted again*

  • Rebecca Blackett

Stephanie’s heel turn on this PPV is far more deserving of a Today in History article than this “match”. Late 90s were way worse for the divas than the, as i call it, Roll-Up Era that took place in the recent years. I’m glad for what Eve, Kaitlyn and AJ did to the division, it’s not perfect, but it’s better than this.

    • OJ Von Erich

      I loved Stephanie’s heel turn! =D

  • jcott3

Women’s wrestling in WWF then wasn’t all bad. You had Ivory, Jacqueline, Tori, and Luna there and they no longer had to deal with Sable’s massive ego.

  • PikachuBoo

    B.B?

I’ve never seen her before! Anyone have any other clips of her?

    • BorisG

She also competed at Royal Rumble bikini contest with these Divas.

    • Glitched

she was the EMT, got into a catfight with Ivory after she helped to revive Miss Kitty (who had just choked on a mushroom or some shit in the Gravy bowl match) and then was put through a table by The Dudley Boyz

  • Guest

Trash. I always hated Miss Kitty/The Kat or whatever she wanted to be called. She was awful and this was a sad year for the women. With amazing talent like Luna, Jacqueline, Ivory, and Tori on the roster, why did Miss Kitty, Hervina, and Terri Runnels need to compete for the title with pointless, un-entertaining matches?

  • SomebodyCallMyDaddy

& some of y’all have the nerve to complain about how kelly kelly and laycool’s pushes ruined the diva division ! Atleast they defending the divas belt in actual wrestling matches
