Today in History: Lita & Trish Stratus vs. Jazz & Molly Holly

On this day in history:

January 12th, 2004 | The feud between Trish Stratus and Jazz had grown increasingly physical, but the two had a buffer of sorts when they competed in a tag match – Trish teaming with Lita, Jazz teaming with Women’s Champion Molly Holly. The match ended with interference by Teddy Long, who threw his jacket on Trish, distracting her and allowing Jazz to get a roll-up win. Chris Jericho would save Trish from a post-match beatdown (again), leading to a match between him and Teddy Long client Mark Henry later that night. Unfortunately for Trish, she couldn’t return the favor, accidentally costing Jericho his match.

    awesome moment

  • C.Welch

I would kill to get some women like this and matches like this back in the wwe

  • Aaron Evans

You know a match is going to be good when all 4 women can go!

    • BorisG

True, and in Divas golden era almost any Diva could.

  • JoeWWE

The crowed literally exploded when Lita’s music hit

  • 8thMilitiaForever

Loved all four ladies in this match.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, Jazz should go in the Hall of Fame this year. One of the best wrestlers ever, and in my book, very underrated. An ECW standout, 2x Women’s champ. She deserves it. So does Lita.

    • Sha95

I wouldn’t say her being a standout in ECW would have anything to do w/ her being WWE Hall of Fame Induction worthy but she definitely had an impact during her time w/ WWE because how much of a ferocious competitor she was. Jazz was one of those Divas whose in-ring skills made up for her not being the best on the mic, even though from the few times I’ve heard her speak she sound descent.

    • jcott3

Lita will definitely go in. As for Jazz, she was the one WWE envisioned being the #1 female but she kept getting hurt when they wanted to push her. Some have said that the only reason Molly ever got pushed was because Jazz and Lita were out.

      • Sha95

That sounds believable, I doubt the WWE was ever really high on Molly, similar to Jilian she was just used mainly as a gimmick character for people to laugh at.

        • jcott3

Molly has said in interviews that Vince liked her work and wished the rest of the women could wrestle as well as she did. Problem was Molly didn’t have a clue how to present herself in order to get a crowd reaction. She wouldn’t have the sex appeal necessary to be a face, and she was too nice a person in real life to really grasp how to be an effective heel. Add to this being all too willing to put people over and too eager to be the butt of comedy spots, she branded herself an uncool, unattractive, unmarketable loser.

          • Sha95

Wow. Well didn’t you sum up the Molly Holly story for me lol.

      • 8thMilitiaForever

        I can see that.

    • BorisG

And so does Molly. All 3 of them who weren’t inducted deserve it.

  • Sha95

I didn’t watch wrestling at this time but I remember watching this match on YouTube once, it was good for what it was & WWE should take note on this for today’s Divas Division, it’s a rarity now that we have a separate Diva feud besides one w/ the champion herself

  • Shaun

Holy crap at the pop for Lita! That was insane! Really you can’t dispute that no other females pops matched Lita’s.

The match was great and well laid out. I always enjoyed Molly and Lita’s work together, if anything I felt their work together was underrated. I always found it strange how their feud over the title stopped soon after Survivor Series 03. I felt the belt really should’ve gone to Lita upon her return, maybe not at SS, but I think they could’ve kept the Molly feud going into Mania 20 where Lita finally got her fairy-tale ending. TBH I’ve always been suspicious about Lita not getting the title and being left off the card at Mania 20…seemed very odd. I don’t think Trish had one of her strongest nights though. Her timing was off in places, and during the move where she took both Molly and Jazz over in a headlock/headscissor combo she went the wrong way, maybe due to ring position, but Molly did well to make her bump work. The neckbreaker was a major botch too, again down to timing or miscommunication. It’s funny though, you don’t notice it as much during this era because everything else surrounding it is so well executed and fun to watch. Love these four!

    • BorisG

Torrie got bigger pops on SD.

      • Sha95

        She did?

        • BorisG

Yes. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2hq3oEWSF4 and full match pls, because during the whole match all Torrie did got big pops.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acQPCaPWEdE this one too.

          • Sha95

I disagree, Lita got bigger pops than Torrie did but I’m not denying that Torrie didn’t receive huge pops as well.

          • BorisG

Have you seen the Velocity one? That’s the one she got pops for everything she did.

          • Sha95

Yea, I seen it. I still think Lita was more over compared to Torrie back then…

          • BorisG

Well IDK, I think Torrie was. But Torrie got the biggest pops on SD even more than their Superstars. Lita got them on Raw.

          • Sha95

I respect your opinion & I agree, ’02-’03 was Torrie in her prime.

      • Shaun

I disagree with Torrie getting bigger pops, but will say she was super over and got massive ovations. The thing is on shows like SD and Velocity they use to and well still do on SD use canned heat to enhance pops. You can hear the subtle differences. Torrie though was massively popular and probably right behind Lita with crowd ovations along with Trish. And Stacy. Those 4 got insane reactions. Whenever I think of Torrie I always get mad that she never got a Womens title reign. People say she didn’t improve in the ring and whilst I admit her move set didn’t grow too much what she did in the ring was fluid, well executed and well timed. She rarely botched as well. IMO she was underrated. She should’ve had Candice’s title reign IMO. Because whilst I admired Candice’s heart and improvement, the fact is that she wasn’t that over and she botched a lot and was sloppy in the ring.

Sorry, I’ve gone off on a tangent! Don’t get me started on different topics in womens wrestling or we’ll be here all day lol.

        • BorisG

They didn’t use those SD fake crowd chants, as you can see in videos I posted below. They use those just for people who aren’t popular and they want to. Torrie didn’t need that. And I still think Torrie got bigger pops.

          • Shaun

They used the canned heat to different degrees with different people, they enhanced peoples pops even if they were popular, they even used it with main eventers. I don’t get why I think it’s stupid, but it’s well known that they did and still do. They’ve dialled it back a little nowadays. Even in the videos you posted you can hear subtle differences, but like I said I agree Torrie got massive pops without the fake crowd noise. But fair enough, agree to disagree :) I think we can both agree though that both Lita and Torrie are two of the most popular women to set foot in the WWE!

          • BorisG

Lita, Stacy, Trish and Torrie were golden 4 of Divas golden era, and the most popular girls of the era. All of them almost got equal pops.

  • trishlita721

When jazz returned in 2006 briefly and had a match against Mickie I was hoping for a Trish vs jazzcause tTrish was at her peak

    • jcott3

Jazz talked about her returning to WWE for the ECW relaunch in her shoot interview. She said she was there for 9 months and the match with Mickie was her only televised appearance. The rest of the time, she was on house shows beating up Kelly Kelly.

      • Sha95

I also heard about her saying that Kelly Kelly & another Vixen at the tme (I think Francine) used to always whine & complain about wrestling or I guess at the time training because neither were actually wrestling much at the time.

        • jcott3

I remember an interview Madusa did where she said Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson did nothing but whine and complain when WCW sent them to be trained at the Power Plant. Molly Holly has said that she knew the Nitro Girls weren’t interested in learning to wrestle then, so she tried to “make it fun” for them.

          • Sha95

Ivory said the same about them in an interview as well. Torrie admitted herself that she wasn’t fascinated about learning how to wrestle in the beginning, although she also mentioned that the people who trained her in the beginning were very rough on her for a beginner so there’s two sides to every story.

          • jcott3

I’ve watched Ivory’s shoot interview where she called Stacy & Torrie “uncooperative and unwilling to learn”.
As for Torrie, she once described her job during her time in WCW as “I make $250,000 a year, and all I have to do is walk a guy to the ring.” The story I’ve always heard about Torrie was she didn’t start taking ring training more seriously until she almost got released by WWE in the mid-2000′s.

          • Sha95

Wow. I can believe that because I remember Torrie herself saying that there were times during her tenure in WWE around that same time were WWE didn’t know what to do w/ her because she wasn’t the best wrestler & that was obviously during the Golden Era (where most women knew how to wrestle) but she did say after her retirement also that her goal was to become Women’s Champion before she left & because she couldn’t wrestle anymore she choose to leave, even after WWE offered her a different type of position in the company outside of being an in-ring competitor, so I do believe at some point Torrie found some sort of passion in her for it.

          • BorisG

Torrie was definitely passionate. Michelle said in an interview, when Torrie was drafted back to SD in 2007, she cried backstage, cause she was leaving Raw, where the Women’s title was, and there was no title for Divas on SD.

She really wanted to compete for it, but never got chance on Raw.

          • Sha95

I’ve actually read that some people felt like Torrie should’ve gotten our girl Candice’s 2007 push because she was there longer but some fans argued back & said that Candice improved more than her & at a way faster pace compared to the several years Torrie had.

          • BorisG

Well I don’t mind either, but looking back at things, I wish Torrie got it. She was supposed to be first Divas champ, but got injured.
And in 2005 at Taboo Tuesday, I think Torrie was too supposed to win, but had personal issues so she didn’t compete for it.

          • Sha95

I agree, I love Candice but I could only wonder what a Torrie reign would’ve been like? I know it probably wouldn’t have been anything groundbreaking but I’m just sayin…

          • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Torrie was extremely passionate. Especially around 2003 when she was feuding with Dawn Marie and later Sable. She said in her shoot interview that she hated doing the bikini contests and wanted to wrestle every week on Smackdown but the WWE kept her doing bikini contest and had her limit her move set in the ring to “fit her character”

          • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Yea Torrie and Stacy both said that Madusa did not like them from the beginning so she was rough when training them. It scared Torrie and Stacy from even wanting to become wrestlers in WCW. On top of that they were only hired to be valets. They were forced into becoming wrestlers because they were so popular with the fans

          • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Stacy and Torrie did work and weren’t willing to learn at first because they were only hired to be valets and WCW decided to make them into wrestlers because they were so popular with the fans. Madusa never liked Torrie or Stacy and pushed them very hard when they first started learning to wrestle to the point that Stacy and Torrie did not even want to wrestle because Madusa was so rough with them. Which isn’t fair at all. This video shows Torrie and Stacy still put in great effort to train
            —> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRxGUR7xHy8

          • jcott3

Keep in mind that Madusa is an old-school girl with an old-school mentality, and also keep in mind that Stacy has made it no small secret that she only got in the wrestling business for the exposure to launch her acting career. Put those two together and sparks would be inevitable.
If you watch Ivory’s shoot interview, she talked about when Mando Guerrero was training the prospective GLOW girls. Many of the girls weren’t listening and weren’t taking it seriously, so he grabbed one of them and stretched the living hell out of her. Half the girls didn’t come back the next day, but Ivory thought to herself “I like this guy”. That was part of the way training wrestlers (male or female) was done back in the old days: put them through hell and see who comes back.

          • TorrieTrishStacyLita

It’s understandable though. I dont think its wrong that Stacy and Torrie didnt want to learn to wrestle. Being a valet, backstage interviewer, ring announcer, etc is just as important as being a wrestler. It’s all about the entertainment and Torrie and Stacy were extremely entertaining and were popular with the fans. They were hired for their looks anyway and still put on great matches for non-experienced wrestlers. They still lasted many years in the WWE and have a significantly larger fan base than most of the WWE divas of today. Stacy made progress with her acting career and Torrie is dating A-Rod so they really stuck it to Madusa in the long run lmao :)

    • BorisG

      Yess me too.

  • daniel05

lol at jazz hair. i love jazz and molly they received a lot of heat.

  • Sha95

Don’t mean to double-comment but I just noticed that this was exactly 10 years ago. Wow…

    • Glitched

oh my god I feel so old

  • Sha95

Trish gets good reactions from the crow but even I have to admit that Lita & Sable’s pops are INSANE & this is coming from someone who personally prefers Trish over Lita.

    • John

My favorite is Trish. But yeah, Sable probably got the bigger pops.

  • jcott3

If Jazz had been able to stay healthy, she would have been right up there with Trish and Lita as the greatest women in WWE history.

  • kewlkatz

Thank goodness Trish and Lita had workers like Molly and Jazz to make them look good in the ring.

  • Cassie Smith

I’m not saying that Trish and Lita was’nt sloppy at times but not all the time some times it was the other people in the ring with them.

    • Sha95

I agree. NO Diva was “PERFECT” in the ring ALL the time!

  • Mariah_Scarey

    Time flies….

  • BorisG

Always love these 4 women. Legends.

  • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Jazz was so amazing. But damn her hair though lol

  • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Yea definitely. I think 90′s Sable got the loudest out of the three but I could be wrong

  • oh wow

Lita’s pop was freaking insane. Not surprising though, she is the best!
