The Power of Love: Maria’s Story

THE POWER OF LOVE-That’s what the world heard in June when Maria Kanellis walked back into the WWE at the Money in the Bank event for the first time since 2010. What some may believe is a corny love gimmick with Maria’s real life husband Mike Kanellis, the real story behind this relationship is quite real and personal. Maria and Mike started dating in 2011, which is when they both were in the Ring of Honor promotion. The couple eventually married in 2014. One would think that they have it all, a passion for their career, a passion for each other, but shortly after Maria came back to WWE her and Mike let their fans into their personal lives.

In August, Maria posted on Instagram that Mike had been battling a prescription drug addiction for the past 3 years. In July he had started his recovery. She has been very candid about their relationship as a result of this news all the way up to the current day.

#DivaLadyWifeMom The Addicted and The Recovery “Part 1” “My struggle with forgiveness while being pregnant and what marriage means to me.” When you walk down the aisle on your wedding day there are a lot of things that cross your mind. I can’t believe this is finally happening. I’m so happy to be marrying my best friend. I wonder what are kids will look like. I love him so much. Please, don’t let me fall down in the giant dress. I hope I have nothing in my teeth, or in my nose. What you don’t think about is, how am I going to cope with my husband’s drug addiction. Or what will it be like to try and love someone that is behind a mask of drugs. Will we be able to conquer this addiction and find a stronger marriage on the other side? No, no one thinks these things. I wasn’t prepared. No one is. Many married couples are trying to not fight over money, housework, and keeping the spark alive. But, when addiction happens, it all changes. For me, I didn’t even know it was changing. I didn’t know my husband had this secret. Honestly, I wish he just liked video games too much or porn. Addiction takes over, it’s not just a hazy husband, it’s mood swings, no motivation, no will to help with housework, paying bills, so many ridiculous fights, lies, and lots of sleeping. I thought he hated me. The fights and the pain that it caused me, I hid from everyone. I just figured he was going through something and I wanted to be there for him. Maybe it was depression. Who was I, to judge? So, I questioned him about it but I tried to also be supportive. The first year went into two and then to almost three and I was tired. I was tired of the lying about where money was going and why he was always broke. Why he would disappear for hours at a time? Did he hate me? So, I started thinking about divorce. I talked to someone about it. I didn’t want to do that. Marriage was a work in progress to me. A talent you are constantly trying to perfect. But it was bad. And I didn’t want to be with someone, I thought, didn’t love me. The discussion of Mike’s addiction has shown how normal this couple really is despite their high profile careers. Before Mike came out with his secret to his wife, Maria felt as if their relationship was headed down a bad path and even blamed herself. They have both discussed how Mike didn’t look like he had a problem, but he certainly was irritable. Her faith and strong will in regards to fixing problems instead of running from them speaks volume to her dedication. In September, Maria announced that she and Mike are expecting. She has received criticism from some fans for being pregnant so soon after her return on social media. She is also active with posting pictures and videos of her workout routines while pregnant, much to some fans negative comments. She responds with her head held high and her positivity shining through. She has consistently stated how she has been going to the doctor and have been following all the correct instructions for a healthy pregnancy.

What a crazy rollercoaster this has been for the first lady of Smackdown Live! Here is hoping the best wishes during her pregnancy and for a healthy and happy baby.

Do we think that Maria will come back after having her baby? Will the couple be back stronger than ever? Most importantly will she be lacing up those boots and getting back to in ring performing? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
