Paige claims the fans didn’t want to take women seriously

We are in the middle of the the most pivotal era of women’s wrestling. With last night’s crowning of the inaugural Women’s Tag Team Champions, the women are making history night after night.

For years, WWE gave us two minute bathroom break Diva matches that often led to cackling from fans and commentators. Was it WWE not allowing women to get better matches and storylines? According to Paige, it wasn’t WWE, it was the fans.

Paige spoke to Gulf News as part of her media run for Fighting With My Family. Regarding women being held back, she had this to say:

“It was never WWE holding the women back. It was the fans not taking them seriously. They wanted to see more of the male characters many years ago. It was a male dominated sport. When I first started, there were only five women there. It was a struggle, but WWE just believed in us. When I got into the ring, I wanted to prove to the fans that girls were capable of having good matches and sometimes, even better. That was kind of my mission from the get go. Now there’s obviously a revolution.”

This is a very controversial statement from Paige since the WWE Universe started the #GiveDivasAChance. That arguably was the first step in giving the women the time to shine and showcase their skills in the ring and on the mic.

What do you think of Paige’s statement? Was it the fans not wanting to see women achieve or was it the hierarchy of WWE? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.
