Paige responds to body shaming critic

As reported by SEScoops a UK news outlet, Evening Standard reviewed the film “Fighting with My Family.” The review praises the film with a four out of the five-star ranking. What wasn’t positive was the misguided effort to celebrate body positivity for the film’s star Florence Pugh. Pugh portrays Paige in this heartwarming biopic of her family dynamic, along with her journey to becoming WWE Divas Champion.

The negative wording in question references the lead actress’s “chunky thighs” compared to Paige’s “significantly slimmer” ones.

“Though Lowden’s performance is gorgeous, Pugh is the film’s main weapon. Hauntingly intense in The Falling and Lady Macbeth, the 23-year-old turns out to be an effortlessly nuanced comedian. With chunky thighs. Her character is based on real-world WWE champion Paige, whose legs are significantly slimmer. How cool! So many actresses offer an idealized version of real women. Pugh is changing the ideal.”

Pugh commented to this review of her body on Twitter. With good reason, she is seemingly concerned about why her body had to be part of the critique in the first place. She had the following to say.

The movie does highlight a moment where Pugh’s portrayal of Paige altered her appearance to perhaps fit in with her tan and blonde hair peers trying to make a name for themselves. This message is to encourage one to be themselves instead of what others want you to be. Although this message is apparent, comparing Pugh’s “chunky thighs” to Paige’s “significantly slimmer” thighs misses the entire point. Paige adds to Pugh’s response to Evening Standard on Twitter.
