Deonna Purrazzo responds to fans chanting ‘Marty Scurll’ at her

Last night, Deonna Purrazzo clapped back at hecklers who were chanting “Marty Scurll” during a match an NXT live event. Later, she took to Twitter to express her frustrations with the chants.

Purrazzo referenced her extensive resume and five years of experience. Her Ring of Honor debut against Mandy Leon is credited as the start of the “rebirth” of Women of Honor. In 2017, she worked matches for Stardom with current NXT and NXT UK wrestlers like Shayna Baszler, Io Shirai, Toni Storm and Viper.

She certainly isn’t the first female wrestler to have fans mock her using their boyfriend’s name. AJ Lee famously had to suffer through a chorus of “CM Punk” chants throughout her last few years with WWE.

Heckling comes with the territory, but chanting for a male wrestler during a women’s match disrespectful to the women who are working just as hard. Matter of fact, some of these women are working even harder to legitimize their respective divisions.

Part of what sets wrestling apart from sporting events is active crowd participation. Making noise for wrestlers to play off is integral to the experience, but fans should still try to keep it respectful. What do you think?
