Paige responds to backlash on Kabuki Warriors name

Paige announced that Asuka and Kairi Sane will now be known as the Kabuki Warriors on this week’s SmackDown. The name has been met with much skepticism and controversy from the WWE fans on social media. A general consensus from the reactions is that the name plays on stereotypes and is walking the line of racism.

Since the tag team name announcement, Paige has responded to the less than favorable reactions via Twitter. She divulged that the duo picked the name themselves so there isn’t a need for the negativity that is being received. Originally Asuka and Sane wanted the “Kabuki Girls,” but Kabuki Warriors was instead selected.

In a WWE Exclusive, Paige highlights the point that she made on her social media response. She explains the option of using the moniker “Warriors” over “Girls” is to make the name more “fierce.” As reported by WrestleZone, it is commonly known that there is a list of names that the talent are able to choose from. If that is the case, they may have chosen the best option. Paige continues to be the mouthpiece for the pair and declares a Women’s Tag Team Championship is in their future.

Asuka also went to social media to show her support of the name. She embraces the Kabuki term by defining it and inferring that the definition describes her.

The name of their tag team is just part of the whole picture that is the Kabuki Warriors. The vast majority are not behind the combination of Sane and Asuka’s entrance music. Instead of creating a new entrance theme for the duo a lazy mixture of both songs was produced. The extremely popular singles competitors are not receiving the warmest reactions as a team at this point.

What are your thoughts on Paige’s defense to the tag team name? Do you think the reaction to the name is understandable or is it an overreaction? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section!
