It’s time for Free Match Friday!

For this week we travel back to about three years ago when the SmackDown Women’s Championship was introduced. It took place at Backlash. This moment was shortly after the brand extension/split was reintroduced and the SmackDown women’s division was considered at the top of its game.

This was a six-pack challenge elimination match. It included, Alexa Bliss, Becky Lynch, Naomi, Carmella, Nikki Bella, and Natalya. All six women were vying for the chance to become the first-ever SmackDown Women’s Championship.

If you know your history, you know the outcome of this match. Regardless it was a massive step in the women’s evolution.

Enjoy it and Happy Friday!

  1. I remember all the Smackdown Stans they were tired of Charlotte/Sasha overrating this match to the high heavens. Horrible horrible ring psychology here. Breaking up falls and throwing everyone out of the ring in an elimination match was stupid af. Tbh the Smackdown women’s title never saw a GREAT match until Charlotte vs Asuka at Wrestlemania.

  2. Ah yes the 2016 women’s era back when it was only Sasha vs Charlotte on raw and on smackdown we usually got a few different women’s matches with these 6.And of course we had those “Paige returning?” Articles every month on diva dirt back then.

  3. tbt to when alexa was new and everyone was excited to finally see her be used as in nxt she was more of a valet, becky finally being given the chance to shine, nikki bella helping others become credible with her star power, the start of naomi and the character she always wanted to pursue , carmella as a new heel ready to show out and natalya as the veteran
