Today in history: Stephanie McMahon & Triple H begin the McMahon/Helmsley Era

20 years ago today Stephanie McMahon turned heel on her father and joined Triple H to form the McMahon/Helmsley era and dominat WWE ever since. The turn happened during a bloody and intense No-Holds-Barred match between Triple H and Vince McMahon at Armageddon 1999.

Vince McMahon and Triple H had been at each other’s throats since the latter married a drugged and unconscious Stephanie at a drive-through wedding chapel in Las Vegas. The marriage left the fresh-faced and innocent Stephanie distraught and Vince McMahon swearing revenge against his new dastardly son-in-law.

The match scheduled for Armageddon had the stipulation attached that if Vince won the marriage between Stephanie and Triple H would be annulled. Stephanie watched from ringside as the two men beat the sh*t out of one another, the chance came for Stephanie to attack her abhorrent husband and strike him with his own sledgehammer. However, her innocence prevailed and Stephanie was unable to exact revenge and strike Triple H. The pause allowed Triple H to recover and down Vince McMahon for the victory. A scared Stephanie cowered next to her father’s fallen body while Triple H approached with sledgehammer primed for attack. Stephanie stood up and revealed the villainous masterplan that had been in play all along.

Stephanie McMahon and Triple H would reign supreme over the WWE both on and off-screen as life would imitate art and the two would become romantically involved. The move would begin Stephanie’s rise through the ranks in the company on route to becoming the most powerful woman in wrestling.
