Beth Phoenix Credits Molly Holly with Getting Her to the WWE

Earlier we linked to the latest episode of Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling podcast featuring Beth Phoenix. In that interview, Beth detailed how she got into wrestling, revealing the role that former WWE Diva Molly Holly played in getting her to the WWE, saying, “[Molly] is probably one of the biggest reasons that I’m working with the WWE right now.”

Beth explained that, while with the indy promotion APW, she took part in a signing at that year’s WrestleMania Fan Axxess event in Toronto. There, she gave Molly a match tape (coincidentally, with soon-to-be fellow Diva Gail Kim), which Molly passed on to trainer Dr. Tom Prichard. Seven months later Beth, Gail and current TNA Knockout Traci Brooks got the call to attend a SmackDown taping and take part in tryout matches. Gail was the only one to get a contract at the time, but eventually Molly encouraged Beth to head to OVW and train. Just out of college, Beth couldn’t really afford to make the full OVW tuition payments, and found that when she went to make her first payment that someone had already made it for her. Beth eventually discovered that Molly covered almost half of her OVW tuition, which Molly said was her way of paying forward the opportunities that others had given her when she had started out. Since Molly wouldn’t accept repayment, Beth would eventually put together a photo album chronicling her journey to the WWE and sent it to her, letting Molly know that it was because of her that her dream came true.

We’ve always heard great things about Molly, but something like this is almost unheard of in the world of pro wrestling. This is really a touching example of her generosity and it makes total sense that ring veterans like Dean Malenko say that she might be “too good for the business”. If there were more people like her in pro wrestling, I wonder how many more Beth Phoenixes we would be seeing in the WWE today?

Yet another reason why Molly (Nora) Holly is one of my favorite person (not just wrestler) of all time.

  • Melina&Mickie4ever!

Wow Never knew that! Molly is also one of my old time favorites. One of my dream matches was Molly Holly vs Mickie James ! I still hope to see that one day hopefully. Thanks you to Molly Holly if it wasnt for her , we wodunt have the Glamazon today

  • Jake

    That was a beautiful story

  • Taylor

A truly commendable act of kindness on the part of Molly — I’ve only read good things about from her peers in the industry.

This is kind of off topic, but have someone you read the awful things a few people — or one person with multiple accounts — on YouTube continuously write about her in almost any video she’s featured in?

    • EveLover

I have read those comments on YT. But its like pathetic to reply back, because some people are just Lowlifes that dont have nothing else to do with their lives and its sad . Its just Pathetic -.-

    • Lily

I’v read those comments too. They call her a ‘fraud’ and a ‘liar’ -.-

      • Lita-Sault-666

Yeah I’ve seen them too. Some of the videos on my account whgich feature Molly, have had several horrid comments on too. I try my best to delete them as I think it’s simply awful that somebody could berate such a kind person like that “/.

      • Melina&Mickie4ever!

I’ve also read those things about Molly.

        • seasons-of-love

It’s not just comments. The person has made videos about her, using action figures. I remember seeing one where he literally had a bag full of Molly figures, and he screwed all the heads off and put them in a bin or something.

There are some insanely creepy people up there. It’d be horrible no matter who the target was, but why on earth would anyone choose to hate Molly Holly???

    • Envy

Omg I hate reading those comments! Whoever that person is needs some serious mental help!

    • art

ive read those comments too..its just weird because she never did anything to deserve those kinds of comments..

    • _Bryan_

I was going to mention that as well. I think they are in relation to her charity youth organization or her work at churches. People are stating that she is a fraud among other things. It’s interesting to wonder why someone would say that but who knows…probably some psycho moron

  • ahlanthony

Molly Holly is a beautiful woman inside and out. I miss her badass attitude in the ring tho.

  • katarinaw4ever

WOW. Molly is amazing! such a good person

  • EveLover

WOW ! This really made me an even BIGGER fan of nora ,shes soo nice and looks really nice ,shes amazing ! I really wish there were more people like this in the world .

And I really have to thank her for giving beth this opportunity .

  • shannymac

That’s amazing! Both Beth and Molly are such inspirational women.

  • Straight Edge Mattie

Molly sound like a great ,kind hearted gal she is my new fvorite now\

  • RR45

Thats amazing!!! Loads of respect for her. You can tell right off the bat she’s a humble person but that’s crazy!

  • AdrianRay

    Aww! I’ve always loved Molly!

  • litafan2000

This is why Molly was my favorite female wrestler and it sucks that she doesn’t get the credit she deserves by wwe.

    • GlamazonInTraining89

I Kno rite & stories like THIS make Me wonder why ppl say such horrible things about her

  • seasons-of-love

I miss Molly so much. ;(

She’s in my all time top three with Melina and Stephanie.

I honestly think she’s Hall of Fame bound. Sure, on paper she has accomplished as much as certain others, but EVERYONE backstage seemed to love her so much, she’s commonly regarded as arguably the best female wrestler they’ve had and IIRC, they even ask FCW women to watch her matches as part of their training.

    Queen of Life.

  • The_JM

Such a touching story, women like Molly are very rare. I would have loved a Beth/Molly match, despite what some women have said about Molly, I still love what I’ve seen from her and she’s a true saint from above :) <3

  • Lily

Molly Holly is the reason why Michelle McCool is such a talented wrestler because Molly inspired her the most and she’s her favorite wrestler of all time.

Molly Holly is one of my all-time favorites as well, she’s second to Michelle.

  • sanchezdiego96

Awww! Molly paid some of Beth tuition! Thats so sweet! I miss Molly Holly. She inspired a lot of women.

  • mikeparis18

The kindness that Molly exhibits is so beautiful. Such a great person and I hope she is placed in the HoF someday soon.

  • DIVAsupporter

Oh wow.. reading this just made me say “awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww” what a great gesture from molly… while she was with WWE I didn’t know much about her personal life.. all I knew is that she was a good wrestler and got her head shaved at WM20…. seriously I’m really shocked to hear that something like this is even possible in wrestling

  • art

Molly is just amazing..molly must’ve known beth really wanted it & helped her get their…its sad she quit because of the way the divas division went with the diva search because she’d have amazing matches with beth & nattie…
im glad wwe credits her as the best technical wrestler because she love one last run from her…

    • The_JM

She didn’t quit, she was released. During late 2004 to 2005 a lot of the wrestling divas like jazz, gail, and molly were released due to wwe’s new direction.

      • Taylor

No, I’m certainly positive she asked for her release. I think she even confirmed that in an interview of some sort.

        • seasons-of-love

She did indeed ask for her release for a personal reason she discussed in her shoot, and Vince said the door was always open for her to come back to the company, which says it all really.

I miss Molly a ton, but on the other hand I’m aware that she does some great work outside of wrestling, so it’d be selfish of me to whine about her not being around any more.

        • The_JM

My mistake :) a shame too, but let’s be honest she probably saved herself a TON of embarassment.

    • Spike7000

Yeah Molly left on her own terms back in April 2005 due to a potential health issue she was scared of

Terri Runnels left in April 04 because she wanted spend more time with her daughter. Sable left in August 04 because she was with Brock Lesnar. Jacqueline was released in July 04 because of creative. Gail, Nidia, Jazz, Shaniqua were released on November 04 or should I say the start of the Dark days and only Gail was given a reason from Johnny Ace due to they wanted to go into a you know what direction with the Divas roster.

Also Dawn Marie-(on a maternal leave and she even told them she would be back and they were ok with it), Ivory, Jackie Gayda were all released in July 05 in that big 20 WWE people releases

  • Future-Knockout/Diva

Such A Lovely & Very Kind Person, I Think Shes Hoped Several Divas In The WWE, This Story Is Very Touching It Just Proves How Generous She Really Is, And She Will Always Be One Of The Greatest Divas Of All Time, If It Wasn’t For Her Beth Wouldn’t Have Made In WWE, Thank You Molly! XD

  • Harley

Oh wow. A my eyes actually welled up after reading this. I know that she’s a good person but I didn’t know that she’s THIS good. Dean Malenko was right in saying that she’s too good for the business. But I’m not complaining. Next to no less than Mariko Yoshida, she’s my favorite ring worker (with MsChif, Awesome Kong, SDR and Melissa just trailing behind.) But as a persona in the business, she’s at the top of my list.

I hope that the business never forgets what a good woman you are Molly Holly. !0’s for you girl. I hope you are happy wherever you are.

Geez, I’m in such a high right now. I feel like hugging the next person who passes me by.

  • DAFereldan91

Thank you,Molly, for making Beth such a well-known star today.Despite of what Molly was displayed on TV(constantly being a heel most of the time),she is one hell of a great athlete with a noble and golden heart. :) She went through all the trouble to raise those girls as they are today.

A little off topic..Then again I wonder, how the hell in the world Kelly Kelly’s got her job anyways?Beth spent most of her youth training so hard,so are Gail,Melina,Nattie, and released Jillian and Katie(who is still doing good on TNA)….I bet Molly must be very upset looking at those hardworking girls being thrown under the bus like that, while those undeserving women get all the spotlights.

    • Jcott3

You really want to know how Kelly Kelly got into WWE? She was a model and John Laurinaitis saw her picture in a swimsuit catalog. He tracked her down and offered her a job. She’d never even thought about getting into wrestling before that.

As for Molly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say a bad word about anyone in real life. She’s never trashed the creative team, the management, the “eye candy only” divas or anyone else.

  • Kash Hunt

*cue the collective awwwww* Wow. I knew that Molly had a good heart, but I never knew that she had helped out fellow Divas. I may not know her personally, but from what I’ve seen/heard about her, she’s a woman with a heart of gold. Best of luck to her!

  • ClassicKellyEve

Ouchhhhh awwwwww, she’s soooo kinnddd~~~ i don’t know that Molly was that kind to Beth.. yeah i think she’s a kind person. If i’m not mistaken she’s a born-again christian and also a minister of it too! Wow!

  • Wesley Romano

Jeezus what a great woman!! I thought she was sweet then and she was sweet even as a heel, this just tops it for me…never heard of anything like that lol

God bless you Molly and Beth Phoenix

I seriously hope I meet molly holly one day and give her a BIG HUG MAN!!
Shes the best so genuine and so modest..
