Vengeance Rewind: Sable vs. Stephanie McMahon (2003)

This Sunday at Vengeance, Divas Champion Beth Phoenix defends her title against Eve Torres. Leading up to the match, we’re going to take a look at other memorable matches at Vengeance and the various October PPV events.

The designated October PPV has changed its name often, from Taboo Tuesday to Cyber Sunday to Bragging Rights and finally to Vengeance. This rewind will look back at an early Vengeance.

2003 | Back in 2003, Vengeance took place in July and was host to a match between two women fighting over the venerable Vince McMahon: Sable and Stephanie McMahon. At the time, Sable was Vince’s mistress, and as his daughter Stephanie was none too pleased with that. Several out-of-the-ring encounters built up to this match, dubbed a “No Countout Catfight”:

Aww Brian Hebner’s sweet. Too bad Steph got run over by the Hulk. Haha

  • trishfan11

I loved this storyline. Stephanie really went at Sable and the match was pretty good, considering the fact that these two rarely wrestled.

lol I remember this well. Good little match, though I preferred Sable’s first run in the WWF, she was far more aggressive back in 98’99. She always told a strong story in any thing Sable was involved in.

Gotta give props to Steph, she wasn’t the most exciting performer but she made her fights seem real.

Steph and Sable took it to the house in this match! I loved it, especially the Grind over Stephanie’s prone body.

  • xAJLeeNerdx

    Loved this match !

  • jeremycanrana

waw this brought me back to the good old days! This rivalry was amazing! I remember that catfight they had when Steph was dressed as a waitress haha!!

OMG I was just watching that actual Catfight where Steph was a waiter on Youtube just now haha!.. I forgot how entertaining it was, I loved it so much that I changed my user name on here just now in respect to Sable’s rage LOL.

  • Nostalgia

Stephanie could put on a Hell of a match whether it was against Trish, Sable, or Lita.

  • Blonde Bombshell

I remember yelling at the front of my TV: “Go Steph! Break that b*tch!!” haha, good times, good times.

  • Team Laycoolness!!!

I miss seeing Stephanie McMagon-Helmsley on my television… Bring back the whiney bitch we all loved to hate (Except me, she was my IDOL!) Hahaha!!! =D

  • Teri

God, this was by far my all time favorite storyline back in ’03. I remember being sooo excited for both Steph’s PPV bouts with Sable and Vince.

  • dah-dah-dah-diva

Sable has the fiercest theme song in WWE/F Diva history. Sable was NEVER much of a wrestler, probably got trained less then 95% of the Diva’s we see today and she can STILL put on a good show with her limited move set and make everything look realistic and nice. Maryse, Kelly, and these fail Diva’s of today need to learn a thing or two from Sable.

And I’ll never understand why Stephanie didn’t get involved in the women’s division. That girl barely wrestled but always knew how to take a bump and put on a good match. She would have made a great addition to the women’s division with more training.

Yeah Sable’s music was always the best. When you heard it, you knew you were about to be severely entertained. She was such an amazing personality.

  • Mike in Like

Some of Stephanies punches reminded me of Sharmell vs. Jenna in TNA… ha but yeah this was a fantastic feud and a pretty decent match.

  • bressie

    Miracle match

  • ElectricMVx

I remember this. The build up to this match was a series of.. as the match itself is, catfights. Although they weren’t your usual catfights, there was one on a Skybox which involved food, a parking lot catfight where Sable’s breasts got exposed.

The match itself was pretty good nice pops for both girls especially Steph when she chases Sable the crowd really loved her. & Sable played the heel so well she was such a jezebel.

  • ghoulieburger

SO freakin amazing. A classic. Sable was da bomb dot com. They should bring her back as Raw GM.

    • trishfan11

I don’t think Sable will come back to wrestling, at least not any time soon. She’s married to Brock Lesnar and he doesn’t want her involved in the business anymore – he wants her to stay at home with him. In his book, he says he asked Sable to quit WWE and that is why she left in ’04.

Sable is the ORIGINAL DIVA make no mistake , there was a reason she was third in line on the WWE Totem pole at one time only behind Stone Cold and The Rock,

  • Envy

Oh I loved this match! The good ol’ days where the less-experienced Divas would participate in catfights instead of matches. And hate her all you want, Sable was still a Diva Pioneer. I freaking love that woman!

  • EveLover

This was a really good match ,I liked it . And I know these two weren’t exactly ‘veterans’ but they put on a show .

Im young ,so I never actually seen the WHOLE feud between sable and steph .But I’ve seen some promos from it on YouTube and by the little I saw ,it looks like it was such a good feud .

Anyways ,sable is just Hoot_^ .Maryse gives me such a sable vibe for some reason ,the sexy gimmick its just WOW . And I love Sable’s theme too :D .Steph was a Tough Girl ,I would’ve really liked to see her be more of a wrestler than what she was. I believe she could’ve been really great in the ring. I wanna see her in my TV again :/

Maryse said she mirror’s her character on Sable, but the foreign version :)

Also, I agree, would have been good to see Steph wrestle more, like Sable did in 1998’99, Sable became quite a force in the ring!.

I have to say, Sable’s second run in WWE was nothing compared to her first, but she sure did get her ass handed to her a lot! Lol! If I ever said she never took many bumps, I sure as heck shut my mouth now, lol.

  • destinyac

It was a pretty good match. The only gripe I have always had with it is how pathetic it makes Sable look. She used to be a force to be reckoned with. Picking fights with and Powerbombing men in heels for example lol. But she kept running from stephanie? Doesnt add up really in my head.

I agree with every thing you say, I had a problem with Sable playing the ‘weaker’ role. And well.. that Catfight in the Sky Box was enough to show Sable could still go!

      • Marlon Eric

I honestly think at this point, since they had women just as gorgeous and marketable as Sable who was willing to actually wrestle/take bumps (mainly Trish Stratus, Torrie Wilson, Lita and arguably Stephanie McMahon) it was drastically different from the time period where she ruled the women’s division like Hulk Hogan. Thus, she now performed in a limited role because she was already very limited.

I don’t know what you guys are talking about. Sable was not horrible in the ring but she wasn’t a standout either. I think you guys have watched her matches from her first run in the WWE. Yes, she did powerbomb Marc Mero and a few divas. But most of the diva matches back then were sub-par compared the divas’ matches from 2001-2006. Sable did the grind, a clothesline, may be took a bump, did a cheap shot (a hit with the title belt or a Nicole Bass involvement), followed by the Sable bomb and the pin – that was her usual arsenal of moves. Some of the times she ran to the corner when Irish whipped looked positively fake (although most divas of the time did it the same way). Ivory, Jacquline, Luna and Tori were much better in the ring than Sable.
Plus, during her second run, Sable’s character was such that it made sense to show her as the weaker one against Stephanie. I was more impressed with Sable’s second run because she showed me that she was an above average worker in the ring. She had charisma, oozed sexuality and was a great character. But if you think she looked strong in the ring during her first run, I don’t know what you were watching.

I always remember watching Maryse matches and thinking she reminded me of somone and this is it. Sable it’s a shame the two were not in the company at the same time imagine if Sable took Maryse under her wing and groomed her for sucsess.
