SmackDown Redux (October 21st, 2011): Beth Talks the Talk, Eve Walks the Walk

While there was no match scheduled for Smackdown this week, we were blessed enough to get an actual promo leading into the Divas Championship match between Eve Torres and Beth Phoenix. Shocking, huh? Watch below as Beth, Eve and Natalya show off their mic skills this week on the blue brand:

It’s been a long time since we had a decent Divas promo, and it’s a breath of fresh air, to be honest. I’ve never thought of Natalya as the strongest Diva when it comes to mic skills, but I thought she did pretty well here. The challenger, Eve did really good as well, but I’m gonna give the MVP award for this segment to Beth Phoenix.

Beth has been playing the stoic, bruiser heel role for so long, I almost forgot how good she is when it comes to laying down a promo, but she reminded me tonight. I would say that, aside from capturing the title, this is one of the most interesting things that D.O.D has done since they first turned heel months ago. As fans, sometimes we forget that sometimes a good promo can be just as good as a match (especially if it’s a two minute match). While this segment may not have been the greatest ever, it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

So let’s talk about the big, pink elephant in the room…: What happened to Kelly Kelly?! A few weeks ago, Kelly was going psycho on D.O.D and seemed like she was on the fast track to a title rematch at Vengeance, but now she’s nowhere to be seen. While it’s nice to have a change of pace from Beth vs Kelly for a fourth PPV, I feel like there’s some more mileage in that feud. I expect Kelly to be in Eve’s corner this Sunday to support her BFF and possibly unleash ‘Crazy Kelly’ on D.O.D once again.

All in all, a good week for the Raw Divas on Smackdown. With any luck, they can ride this momentum into Vengeance and put on the fantastic match that Diva fans are hoping for.

Now, that I finally saw the full segment:

    1) Beth is horrible on mic. I mean, WOW!

    2) That outfit was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen, and amusingly almost did.

    3) If this angle does not end with everyone the Divas Of Doom have victimized over the past few months giving Beth and Nattie their finishers and whoever the Babyface challenger is winning the title, I will be really upset.

I don’t think it’s coming to a head on Sunday, but given the promo, Sunday could be an out for it.

    • number1AngelinaLovefan

Are toy kidding that was an awesome promo the best that we have seen sence LAYCOOL

      • number1AngelinaLovefan

        I ment are you kidding

    • TheLadySamantha

You’re obviously a stupid Kelly/Eve mark. If that’s not good mic skills, then I truly don’t know what is.

      • number1AngelinaLovefan

Yeah really i will agree eve is good on the Mic but so are Beth and nattie

        • Juan

That segment was cringe worthy!! Beth and Natalya have never been strong on the mic and sound like hypocrites!! I mean take a look in the mirror your both “barbied” up as well -_- Eve was just meh… I agree with Vince Mcmahon the divas of today are a waste of time unfortunately

        • DaWayne999

If u feel that way, then why are u on a site dedicated to the divas. We come on here to lift them up and support them. Not say they are a waste of time

        • Juan

In case you haven’t noticed this site isn’t just a site dedicated to the divas… its also dedicated to the knockouts and indy women or womens wrestling in general!! The divas don’t interest me anymore as evidenced by the many failed attempts I’ve made at watching their segments, no enterainment what so ever

  • wwe141

I luv Beth and eve on the mic. Not a big fan of Natalya on the mic tho,I don’t find her believeable on the mic, I still luv her tho

    • unscripted & flawless

I completely agree with you. I’ve seen saying that since the LayCool feud. I think she comes off as too fake, and when Beth stepped into the LayCool feud she definitely took over mic-wise and Natalya was her shadow, just like she is now.

  • kellytrishfan

It was nice to actually see a promo, but Beth’s mic skills are horrible. I’ve ne’er really thought Beth owned it when it came to the mic and this promo is just another example of why I think that. She always comes across as bland and keeps in the same tone no matter what she says, it’s always emotionless to me – I don’t know, I just find myself getting bored half time, it’s way too forced. Natalya was fine and Eve just proved she can put it down on the mic, to all te critics who says she can’t. I think on Sunday, Eve is going to lose by either DOD cheating and Kelly attacking them post match, or Beth and Kelly interacting and they start brawling and that leads to a DQ.

    • unscripted & flawless

Natalya was fine? O_O Eve was popping her neck too much and like facing the crowd while she was talking to Natalya/Beth which made it look like she was doing a 5th Grade play and was trying not to have her back to the crowd and Natalya is nothing more than Beth’s shadow and she repeated everything Beth said. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see how Beth’s serious tone makes her bad on the mic.

      • kellytrishfan

Uh. Sorry I don’t see how Eve’s motions or Natalya being “nothing more than Beth’s shadow” make their mic skills bad? Beth’s “serious” tone is to me, boring. It remains in the same tone no matter what she says with little to no real intense emotion. That’s what sells a promo to me. Let’s face it, most of the stuff the Divas are given to work with is crap, but it’s how it’s delivered that makes it even worth remembering. Eve’s “I … am not … a barbie doll” line is better than if she just delivered it in a “serious tone” of “I am not a barbie doll.” And as for Natalya, yes she was fine. Lol. Not bad, not god. Just somewhere in the middle, Beth was the weak link for me.

  • DaWayne999

All 3 did good, but as 4 MVP, beth really didnt stand out. Even nattie with her little side comments where better and had me LOL’ing and the faces she was making as well. I love nattie but eve was def the star of that promo. She just shines and makes you feel like WOW, she is good. But great stuff overall. Pumped for sunday.

  • Teri

Trish needs to drop by for a quick hour or two and show these girls how to work a mic.

    • Teri

      well, Beth anyway.

    • RR45

and Eve and Natalya and most of the divas.

  • EveLover

Samething I said on last night’s discussion post, Eve made me a proud beliEVEr. She showed emotion and agressiveness ,I just loved it .

Natalya and Beth were great also ,I am not going to take anything away from them. Their really getting better in the Mic imo. I loved natalya’s little side comments ,shes just great .

I think this promo gave the Eve vs Beth match the build up that it needed ,since the match just came out of nowhere . *FingersCrossed* vengeance doesn’t dissappoint.

Eve comes off more as a heel in that promo than Beth or Nattie did lmao.

    • JSciola

Beth and Natalya said they relish in the suffering of others. Eve was standing up for herself. Please elaborate your meaning.

The way she just talks (is kinda heel-ish /stronger than Beth) and when she hit her and ran..thats kinda chicken shit (heel) move to do IMO.

  • RR45

I think they’re all decent on the mic but there’s a lot of room for improvement. The only way to improve is to give them more promos and have ppl teach them how to cut promos. Natalya > Eve and Beth on the mic imho.

It was still nice to see some actual buildup. They also followed this up with a really good exclusive.

  • Jhonmarco

Nice to see the girls get promo time, but not very strong stuff. I find it funny that one bad promo & now Beth is so horrible & boring on the mic? Really? You guys wanted Beth as champ & get mic time & she gets it & now she’s so boring & horrible? Wow -,- the girls need work on their delievery of the promo as they sounded way too monotone like McCool. I don’t think any of the girls are bad on the mic, there is Eve’s promo against the Miz thatw as much better, Beth has done much better, & so has Nattie.

  • wl75

When are they going to learn that if they want to keep it PG, don’t put a Diva in a top like that when you know she’s going to be pushed or hit….it’s a wardrobe malfunction just waiting to happen.

Beth just won the title, so I think she retains on Sunday- don’t think it will be clean however- most likely someone is going to get DQ’d.

  • Melina&Mickie4ever!

Crazy Kelly where are you lol nice segment tho something different. All ladies did well imo

  • shameronstar

Maybe the divas come off as monotone and bland because they hold themselves back because they fear if they get to much into the promo they may start cussing at each other and calling each other b*tches, and sl*ts, and saying the other one needs to go to hell or something.

    • number1AngelinaLovefan

Yeah i agree WWE held back on that promo but i thought it was still awesome and i think Beth did a great job on the MIC and i love Natatyla

      • Marshy

Linda’s Senate opponent or opponents would have something on Linda’s husband wrestling organization especially for the second time around for Linda, like if Eve or Natalya/Beth would be cussing or calling each other names to be sounding like Bad Girls Club in front of children or if Beth would have a wardrobe malfunction especially in that hideous outfit that doesn’t scream Beth Phoenix that it would simply gives Linda’s opponent ammunition that could seriously cost Linda the election.

  • WWFoverWWE

Eve is pretty decent on the mic, she’s not bad by any means.

Not sure if Beth is wearing this girly stuff because she wants too, or because management wants her too. It looks like she’s trying to match her image to the divas title

    • number1AngelinaLovefan

I think manegment is making them becuz Beth never used to dress like that

  • Ouellet

Maryse Will Return This Sunday On Vengeance 2011 Or This Week On RAW And Start A Feud With D.o.D. For The Divas Title.

  • mykel1990

Well, the promo was alright, it wasn’t like all that, a bag of chips and french onion dip. I wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t drop-dead fabulous. To me, NATALYA was the best in that segment last night. Eve was okay, and I honestly wasn’t really feeling what Beth was saying, she just didn’t really click with me. Then again, Beth’s promos over the years very seldom have. I honestly think that what makes me like Natalya on the mic is her voice, it’s so different and deep and makes her stand out against other divas, and she’s kinda forceful when she speaks, and I dig it! But yeah, hopefully Eve and Beth can give us a good show tomorrow.

      I agree, Nattie is awesome!

      • number1AngelinaLovefan

Yes i love her Voice it is so diffrent and sexy i love it

  • shannymac

I thought all four women did really well in this promo. I love the fact that Eve looked like she meant business from the moment she came out. Rather than coming out all smiles, she had a stern look on her face. That really helped to sell her promo for me. Beth and Nattie were fantastic as well.

I have to disagree with Steven and say that the feud between Beth and Kelly has totally run out of steam. “Crazy Kelly” isn’t believable and I don’t think there’s anything they can do to regenerate intrest in that feud. I think it would be better to either keep the focus on Eve chasing the belt, or turn Kelly heel and have her feud with Eve.

  • Poison_Ivory

LMAO Eve’s entrance theme SO doesn’t fit for interrupting ppl’s talk :D

And why did Beth & Nattie change from the Sisters of Salvation into bland mean girls that only make girls cry. I just hope this storyline ends and DoD faces some other competition from SD!, and Eve and Kelly giving Raw some action as well.

“LMAO Eve’s entrance theme SO doesn’t fit for interrupting ppl’s talk :D”

LMAO! I always pretend it’s the remixed version i’m hearing. After CM Punk dissed her theme song, I can no longer listen to it without cracking up haha.

I loved this segment! Eve is slowly proving her detractors wrong with every opportunity she has to showcase her personality. I think people will finally start to get behind her as a top face; and I think she has the potential to be a convincing heel as well. I loved the way Beth sold that shove by Eve like it was from the Great Khali! Kills me everytime. LOL

  • shameronstar

I think people need to understand that Beth and Natalya are strong wrestlers compared to the divas but not monster dominant wrestlers in comparison to them. They clearly can be beaten although it may take luck and extra effort on the part of their opponent. At least Kelly hasn’t been beating Beth by knockout with the K2 that would actually be much much worst than losing by roll up because at least with a roll up lost you can use the excuse that that the person who lost got overconfident, let their guard down and at that particular moment their was a vulnerable spot that the other person took advantage of. Now Kharma is a different story. Beth and Natalya weight probably 20 to 30 pounds more than the average diva so they can actually be somewhat realistically taken off their feet by the other girls, but Kharma weights like maybe 100 something or more pounds or so then the average diva even Beth and Natalya, so Kharma, more understandably, can and differently and should play a more unstoppable and unmovable dominant monster character. At least with Beth and Kelly, Kelly can roll Beth up for a pinfall, but Kharma on the other hand is so MASSIVE that the only way she could loss is if the wwe booked her in some type of gimmick match like a ladder match, cage match, hardcore match, or streetfight. Hell, the only time Kharma as Kong lost cleanly by knockout to a knockout in TNA is when Tara practically jumped off the top of a cage which is like a story high and basically used her entire body as a kamikaze or something.

  • Marlon Eric

The last few WWE storylines as of late has to do a lot about Barbie Dolls and ugly on the inside and weight issues and superficial BLAH BLAH BLAH! Everyone on the roster, from Beth to Natalya to Eve to Alicia to Kelly Kelly to even Tamina and all in between look BETTER than the average woman. Can they introduce something else to the division besides this bullshit and just …hit a bitch with a chair already?! Introduce a girl who just wants to hurt someone…

  • Lily

“There is nothing you can do to break me” .. what the fuck. The way she said it was just so boring and it didn’t bring any emotion to it. It’s as if she’s trying too hard.

Beth did fine on the mic. She speaks with emotion and speaks properly. She reminds me of McCool when she speaks because they’re both a bit monotone and it makes it sound awkard when they speak as if they don’t bring anything to it but they do.

Beth > Eve in every single possible way.

  • Nostalgia

They need to give the divas more promo opportunities, more feuds

  • Rhawk

I don’t think Eve is the best on the mic by any means, but when she said ‘I am not a barbie doll’ and ‘There is nothing you can do to break me’, that felt real, she didn’t sound forced like her Crazy Kelly usually does, she sounded, excuse the bad pun, BeliEVEable! =-P

And of course Beth & Nattie were their usually brutal selves, but brutal in a good way like. They sound believeable and are two of the best promo girls in the WWE right now (which isn’t saying much cause half of the roster never get promo time to have any promos).

Maybe WWE should in all honesty replace half of their thrown together matches and just have them cut a short 2-minute promo, but I doubt this will happen anytime soon.

  • chrisP

Like I said last night, good idea but the delivery was lacking. Eve’s “I’m…..not….a Barbie doll” was one line that particularly made me cringe.

They should give the Divas time to talk at house shows so that promo time they get on TV will not have to be used as practice.

  • Goodvibes

I love the fact that we got a promo, but in comparison to the EPIC Piggy James promo involving Maria, Mickie, Laycool and Beth this was just bland. Beth needs to work on her conviction, she didnt come across the way she actually looks if that makes any sense, and Natalya works the mic like she’s reading a teleprompter, this time I have to say EVE definitely took the victory, she’s becoming the new age Michelle Mccool though with the WWE pushing her despite her non reaction.

    • DaWayne999

Really, Eve gets reactions like I said. Just because it isnt kelly kelly caliber doesnt mean she doesnt get a reaction.

Eve is hardly the new Michelle McCool. She can get the audience behind her in the ring, and had they not been in Mexico last week, I’m sure the audience would have been responding to her promo. Perhaps WWE keeps pushing her, but this is the first time she’s really been given the opportunity to deliver a promo in an actual feud.

      • Marlon Eric

Eve was given a major promo spot with The Miz and Alex Riley. Perhaps it wasn’t “her own feud” but entering a diva with male involvement anything is meant to give her a slight advantage from the regular diva department. I haven’t thought much about the Michelle McCool comparisons, in but if we’re talking pushed alot, given more opportunities than most and shoved down throats – Eve is a top spot in that category. Not saying it is or isn’t deserved as McCool Haters tend to.

        • Marlon Eric

Not to mention when she wasn’t wrestling on RAW or Smackdown, she was always used as a manager and shown on TV, whether with Cryme Tyme, Chris Masters or R Truth. If Eve is finally getting pops, it’s been a long experiment coming.
