The Diva Dirt Writers’ Choice Awards 2011: Promotion, Independent Match & Televised Match of the Year

Diva Dirt presents the first annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, as well as hundreds of live events on DVD, additionally, we’ve followed a countless number of wrestlers over the year, and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2011, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice blue ribbons.

How it works
Based on the nominations for the fan-voted Year-End Awards, each writer was asked to make their pick for a select number of categories. Seven team members took part and the majority vote for each category determined the winners.

The results of the Writers’ Choice Awards will be published in three blocks over the next week.

Please note: The Writers’ Choice Awards are not the results of the fan-voted Year-End Awards. The Year-End Awards voting is still open until December 31st and the results of your vote will be published on January 1st, 2012.

– Part 1: Best Breakthrough, Best Feud, Best Babyface, Best Heel and Most Improved Wrestler

Indy Promotion – 1st WILD Wrestling 2nd WSU
Independent Match – Winter vs Terra Calaway (Should be in that contest)
Televised Match – ODB vs Mickie James (December 1st, iMPACT wrestling)

  • TheJoshiFan

Great choices Diva-Dirt. I agree with all of them!

  • TheJoshiFan

@JillianHallTNA Ha. That was a joke right? Wild is not even in the league of WSU or Shimmer. It’s bush league at best.

  • Jhonmarco

IMO, Shimmer is the top company for women’s wrestling. WSU is great in its own right, but its not in Shimmer’s league. & tbh a lot of the matches from Joshimania were just as good, if not better than Wargames. The match was fantastic, but I personally thought other matches were better. Yay for Beth/Eve pick :) they brought their A-game that night.

  • Jhonmarco

LOOOOOOOL @ your first 2 picks!

  • Megumi

Personally the promotion of the year for me was NEO. A lot of emotional matches, retirements and wrestlers this year. It went out on a great note.

  • TheJoshiFan

@Jhonmarco To Diva-Dirts defense they didn’t say they picked WSU because they had the best matchs. It sounds like its based on business which makes sense.

  • TheJoshiFan

    @Megumi I loved Neo.

  • Chryst Voegele

million percent agree with TV match of the year!

  • Bdawg0701

THIS HAS BEEN WSU’s YEAR!! Though I’m bumbed ACW wasn’t nominated (despite not being a women’s promotion), WSU was the stronger women’s promotion this year, with their storylines, breakout talent, etc.

I haven’t seen the War Games match, so I can’t judge. But I need to see how it top the 10,000 Thumbtacks Match, the WSU Ladder Match, and the Joshimania 6 Tag.

Eve vs. Beth was in my home town of San Antonio, TX (though I was at ACW instead), but that was a great match and it got me to like Eve (just a little bit). But honestly, Indies top the mainstream.

  • EveTorres25

Where can I get WSU matches for free?

  • EveLover

Im suprised shimmer didnt win tbh.

And WOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!! Eve & Beth got match of the year :D . Love it ,its undoubtably the best match of the year as far as divas go .

  • Brandz6661

I think match of the year was The KO’s Gauntlet match ! I mean just because the divas actually put on a good show for once doesn’t make it match of the year material. Again this is my opinion, and I don’t want to offend anyone or get in a fight with anyone.

  • seasons-of-love

DB/Gail vs. Kidd/Melina was clearly a much stronger match than Beth/Eve, but meh.

  • DarknessRuler

Def agree with user above. The mixed tag match on Superstars was a hell of alot better then Eve vs Beth. And don’t hate on my NJ native promotion. Keep going strong WSU!!!

  • Future-Knockout/Diva

Spot On, WSU Without doubt the best womens promotion this year
Eve vs Beth was pretty good, but my pick would have to be either the Knockout gaunlet or the street fight with ODB vs Mickie, But can’t wait until the results come in!

  • AKA_AK

    Eve/Beth deserved it.

  • mikie91

I’m gonna go with Prowrestling Eve for best indy promotion. I haven’t seen too much from them but from what I’ve seen they have one of the most solid rosters ever seen in women’s wrestling. Some of the girls are ridiculously good and apparently the European girls realize that having your own style can really set you apart from the other girls. I’m not saying our US and Canada girls don’t but Europe’s got it down it seems. I see big things from this company in 2012 and onwards.

  • Raekon

    Good picks! :)

  • VinceNotVance

I can’t agree with this one. Eve/Beth was decent, albeit great by WWE Divas Standards, but the true Divas match of the year was barely seen.

WWE Superstars: 6/30/11 Beth Phoenix vs. Gail Kim.

No Divas match can even compare this year.

  • G32106

I never like to be rude to other people’s opinions, but i extreme lol’d at the first two picks too! :P

  • G32106

    100% Agree!

  • Dave Muscarella

I agree. SHIMMER has better production quality, better talent, and an overall better product.

WSU isn’t bad by any stretch, but its the TNA to SHIMMER’s WWE in my opinion. Its great to have more options to watch women’s wrestling though.

  • Megumi

Oops, wrong year! I guess NEO could be considered last year, but I still prefer it over the rest.

I don’t watch WSU much, the only matches I’ve seen were also pretty sloppy, so I’ll go with Shimmer.

  • EveLover

Also ,Merry Christmas Guiseee :’) . Hope all of you have great holydays .

  • mariah.

    Great comparison! Agree completely.

  • mariah.

Merry Christmas to you toooo :)

  • Jhonmarco

Definitely, and like you said isnt that great? Shimmer is more about pure wrestling, while WSU is more about storylines & going “there” with their storylines. WSU desperately needs better low/mid card talent. Girls like Amber & Jana havent really improved enough to be on the roster. Lexxus is someone WSU should look to invest in though, future main eventer no doubt. Bring in some young talent that can go, like Athena, Leva Bates, etc.

  • VinceNotVance

Though technically speaking, the match wasn’t televised (online only) since it was broadcast a few weeks after the WGN America deal went through (but it was televised internationally, if I remember correctly).

But just saying, it’s a fantastic match that deserves some commendation.
