This Week in History: Katie Lea & Rosita Have Their Debuts, Awesome Kong Has Deja-Vu & More

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.

So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…

February 7th, 2002 | Two Divas and two gay men are feuding. How to solve their differences? With a pose-off, of course! Yes, Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler took on the duo of Billy and Chuck in what amounted to a swimsuit competition and an opportunity for the ever-cultured WWE audience to gasp and grimace at the male-on-male “action”. Torrie and Stacy won, of course, sending a message that every popped-collar frat boy has professed from the dawn of mankind: guy-on-guy: ew, girl-on-girl: hot!

What are your memories of this classic moment? Tell us in the comments…

Lita’s first match after her ACL injury in January 2005, was so exciting to see her back in the ring! Litacanrana!

I still get such a smile when I see Lita because she’s my idol. That’s the woman who made me take notice of the women even though I had been watching for 11 years at that point when she debuted. To see all the times Lita was in the main event over her career is such a rare achievement and clearly the WWE knew she could do it. I wish Edge and Lita had won the match but of course Captain Save A Ho Cena ruined it. I was really happy for Maria during this match because it was a big deal for her and she was wrestling her favorite diva.

I loved the mixed tag match with Edge and Lita.
It was awesome to see her do the Litacanrana!

Oh I forgot to add how I wish the match was a bit longer and it was nice to see the crowd cheering after Lita did the Litacanrana

The Stacy, Torrie, Billy & Chuck thing was what ended Trish’s first Women’s Championship run. She & Lita discussed it in a radio interview a couple of years back where they said you could turn down things Management wanted you to do, but it meant you’d likely be punished.

They wanted Trish to do this angle with Torrie. She refused, saying it wouldn’t be good for the credibility of the Women’s Championship. So, Stacy did it, instead, and Trish lost the Championship.

But, since she was still the most over woman on the roster, they couldn’t keep punishing her for long.

I was infuriated when I heard that! Trish talked about that in other interviews around the same time as the one you mentioned, and also mentioned that the writers wanted her and Torrie to kiss.

She was *completely* in the right to deny it, especially since she had just recently won the re-instated title and was right in the midst of her feud with Jazz. WWE was just re-training the audience to get into the women’s matches and feuds, and having Trish do the posedown would have confused them. This isn’t to talk about the audience like they’re guinea pigs, but it’s woefully inconsistent to have Trish in a hard-hitting wrestling match on Raw and then do a bikini posedown on Smackdown.
