This Week in History: Stephanie Gets Abducted, Wins a Title & Gets Banished, Two WrestleMania Title Matches & More

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.

So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…

March 28th, 1999 | Spurned super fan Tori challenged Sable for her Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 15, making her in-ring debut with the match. No pressure, right? Tori very nearly won the match, but a debuting Nicole Bass came to Sable’s aid and helped her seal the victory. Nicole would eventually become Sable’s personal bodyguard, making this moment one of the best non-verbal job interviews ever given.

What are your memories of this classic moment? Tell us in the comments…

WM 19, Trish-Victoria-Jazz, was, I’d say, the best Wrestlemania Women’s match, ever, with only WM 22 (Trish-Mickie) competing with it.

It had everything. Very good build-up, too, though very simple. No soap opera, just establishing the three characters and their mutual hostility and desire for the Championship, mostly told in a series of matches and run ins each week since the Chicago Street Fight in January.

Having the title defended on both shows hurt the Division in the long run, I think. Back when Raw and SD were genuinely equal brands with their own identities, the Women’s Championship was an important part of Raw’s identity, like the Cruiserweight Championship was for SD. So, the title got a lot of focus. SD, meanwhile, would give new women like Candice and Melina room to get their characters developed and over, to be moved to Raw when they were deemed ready to play with the big girls.

As for the arm wrestling, this is what led to the crowds turning on Christy by the time they got to WM 21. The difference in muscle between Christy and Trish was so obvious the fans refused to accept that they were supposed to buy Christy being physically far stronger than Trish, and rebelled. If you look on Youtube for Trish’s appearance on Hollywood Blvd to promote WM (which was in the Staples Center in LA, that year), you see just how much the fans had turned on Christy, treating Trish as the total babyface during her promo. It had turned into a view that Trish was being disrespected by a company she’d busted her ass for for six years, and that the intelligence of the fans was being insulted. The IWC spent the week writing articles about what a disgrace this was. When Trish retained at WM, the reaction of the fans was relief rather than booing the evil heel.

Then, the whole Matt-Lita-Edge thing blew up, and it got even worse. The Raw after WM showed that Trish couldn’t get booed no matter WHAT she did to Christy and Lita. She destroys them in a very heelish way, and gets a standing ovation.

Then, Vince made the whole situation worse by thinking it was just the defiant Southern California crowds, and things would be back to normal once they were away from there. Talk about a HUGE miscalculation…

What he should have done was have that Raw after WM be the end of the storyline, move Christy to something else (like getting her proper training at OVW), and take Lita off TV for a while to heal her injury, which would have allowed the Matt thing to blow over. And, it WOULD have blown over if Lita hadn’t been on TV for a time. If you’re out with an injury for a while, the crowds will welcome you back warmly even if they were booing you out of the building when you left.

That triple threat match at Wrestlemania was truly great. 3 of the best divas going at it! Love it! The Trish/Christy scenario was just a hot mess, Trish carried Christy well though & it would turn out Christy truly does have a passion for the business as she would still be in wrestling 7 years later. Who knew! IMO though the Mickie/Trish match in my eyes will be the best match at Wrestlemania to date. The build-up was great & the match was great as well. When was the last time a match got a 6 month build-up? Those 2 tore the house down & many fans antipated that match the most that night!

The Tara/Daffney feud is SO underrated. Solid story & good action/wrestling involved. A shame Daffney never won the title.

HAHA Lol i agree with every thing u said!!!! I loved Mickie and Trish’s EPIC EPIC EPIC chemistry at WrestleMania. I also loved the match between Trish, Lita n Jazz, then u have a very cool match between Alundra and Leilani Kai but I cnt decide which is the best Divas match overall. I think Mickie n Trish really brought their all to the game n what made it even interesting was that the fans cheered 4 Mickie James who was an incredible heel at that time, and also cos of Trish’s lengthy reign (they want a new champ). and It was Mickie’s first Mania’! Its sad knwing that Mickie performed so well in her first mania but quickly got overshadowed to the back with the playboy stuff continuing at the grand stage when she has busted moves and done her bit to stay on top. I guess Vince thought she wasn’t a money maker but hell yh she can be! did u see the HUGE POP she get these days! Back in mid 2007, she was getting huge pops than Trish lol!

Hey guys, i jus read an important post over n it said that
“in an injury that could affect this Sunday’s WrestleMania XXVIII Divas Tag Team Match featuring Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos against Beth Phoenix and Eve, New York Post gossip column Page Six reported Monday that the Menounos broke a rib during a recent dancing rehearsal for Dancing with the Stars. Maria broke the rib during a hardcore rehearsal with dance partner Derek Hough, who was teaching her the Cha-cha-cha.Menounos confirmed the injury to Extra Monday, the entertainment news program she hosts. She says she suffered two broken ribs during a recent dance rehearsal. She will nonetheless perform on tonight’s Dancing with the Stars.”

Woah i couldn’t believe dis at all lol. Although it’s not official whether Maria will remain in the card or not, its likely she will recover from the rib injury n compete at mania. I hpe WWE pulls a swerve cos imagine the risk in her injury. It could only worsen but only time will tell on RAW tonight!

Holy shit holy shit holy shit, HOLY SHIT! I’m freaking out right now, i would never ever wish harm on another person but if it is true then maybe us fans can actually get a match that we deserve on the biggest card of the year. @EveLover, did you make a voodoo doll in order for this to happen? Haha jk!:P

      •!/StephMCK2 StephMC

HAHA OMG I was thinkin the same too! Where is @EveLover wen we needed her! HOLY EFFIN SHIT! The girl is pyschic! NOW we need her n predict who will be K2’s partner if this happens HAHA. WE WANT LAYLA!

        • Air-Bourne

I’m pretty sure EveLover is a due haha. Yeah i’d love if Layla came back but as long as it’s her or Natalya i’ll be happy.

        • perceval

They’ll probably just cancel the match, outright.

        •!/StephMCK2 StephMC

@AIR-BOURNE I so agree with u! Gawsh i dont wish any sort to happen to anyone especially wen u break two ribs OUCH! WWE needs 2 pull a swerve 2nite. Hpin that Maria goes on via satellite on RAW n reveal her replacement! n out comes Layla or Nattie who comes to save for Kelly and have a brawl with Beth n Eve! But gd luck to Maria I guess but for some reason she still may wrestle but not do any spots.

Trish vs. Christy was a case of the WWE’s retooling of the women’s division into “the WWE Divas” blowing up in their face. WWE had planned on having a Trish vs. Lita match that year, but when the Queen Of Extreme tore her ACL, they went to Plan B: Christy Hemme, a green-as-grass rookie who got the nod because she won the 2004 Diva Search. They didn’t have much choice. Jacqueline, Jazz, Gail Kim and Nidia got fired in 2004, Ivory was reassigned behind a microphone, Victoria was exiled to Heat and Molly Holly was reduced to a jobber who couldn’t even beat the lovely but incompetent Stacy Keibler.

Christy had a good attitude and was willing to learn, but WWE tried to make an instant star out of her and she couldn’t live up to the hype. I remember the arm-wrestling contest. It wasn’t even a struggle: Christy THUMPED Trish twice in short order and no one bought it.

Shortly after WrestleMania 21, it all fell apart. Fans still couldn’t buy Christy as a wrestler, Molly quit, Trish injured her back and WWE could no longer ignore Lita’s status as Public Enemy Number One (becoming Edge’s valet), leaving Victoria the only decent female wrestler in the company.
