Today in History: Chyna vs. Lita at Judgment Day 2001

On this day in history:

May 20th, 2001 | At Judgment Day 2001, Chyna finally faced a Diva she deemed fit to challenge her for her Women’s Title: Lita. Still, recognizing a worthy challenger didn’t make Chyna any more modest, as evidenced by the fact that she strode to the ring with peacock feathers framing her head. Lita gave Chyna more of a challenge than any other Diva before her, but she still couldn’t best the 9th Wonder of the World: a powerbomb did her in, and Chyna retained her title. Post-match, the champion congratulated the challenger on a well-fought match, and they hugged in a genuine show of good sportsmanship.

I love how you could see all the overhead lights over austin’s room.

This match was very well prepared for. The board should look back at these days and put that into their diva matches, especially with RAW going 3 hours now. Divas matches could go from 2-4 minute matches to 7-10 minute matches. plus a backstage promo. We’ve seen a lot of backstage stuff with A.J but that’s really it. A.J is being built i guess cause she will be needing to do this backstage stuff, and If they do little less botches on the moves cause Now I’m seeing the men do it even more now.

The board really does need to bring back good women’s wrestling matches now and they should start with AJ whose getting more exposure then any other Diva besides Eve,Aksana,Layla and Cameron & Naomi.

Alot of potential but I guess WWE doesn’t see it? : (

Well WWE sees it, but they don’t want to do anything about it. I grew up watching the WWE 1997 – 2007 (born 96) I remember those matches and I almost left it cause all they did in 07-09 was tag matches almost all the time (I call the tag era)

It’s quite sad to look back at this considering where Chyna is now…

You don’t get that high in a business without true dedication and hard work.
And now she’s digging herself her own grave… It’s sad.

I hope this is just a low among her many highs, like this moment in her career, and she gets rehab or just some support from family or friends who are actually good influences.

    How Ironic…..

This is the chyna we all know and love…but the chyna of today is a whole new person..She really needs to get herself together and solve what ever problems she is going through. I would hate to hear something trgaic happened to chyna down the line because she is one of my favorite past divas. Rea lFans dont turn their back in their stars even when they are at their worst.

To bad we dont hear the crowd responed to the divas like this now-a-days…

  • LadyGoDiva

Luv this match because having two of the greatest Divas in the company at that time going up against each other is amazing and thats why its such a classic.

Also loved the crowd along with it because it was hard to root for both ladies since its a great face vs face match.

I love this match even with a chyna malfunction LOL..i liked how well chyna & lita worked together…

    • art

It’s sad a person in the crowd had a sign “chyna my hero” look where she is now….

  • _Bryan_

This is one of my fav women’s matches. If they actually had a stroyline going into this, it could have been really good. Although, i suppose since the two were so over that would be difficult….
Regardless, one of the best matches for women at that time and the longest for god knows how long, even though it was just over 6 mins.
    – you will never hear a crowd pop for a wristlock at 7:15 again, ever haha -

    • art

      They weren’t cheering for a wrist lock ;-) LOL…

      • _Bryan_

haha obviously! her and jackie were notorious for wardrobe malfunctions such as these

        • art

i know jackie was every match she had you saw something LOL..wasn’t this chyna only malfunction???..

        • _Bryan_

only one that was actually obvious and put on t.v. Apparently they happened all the time, according to her. I remember her saying “it was hard to tell if the crowd was going crazy that I did a cool move or that my boobs were falling out ” haha… I remember a match she had with Eddie… wasn’t much support there ill say that much !

ROFL..i remember when val venis suplexed her & her pant strap broke lol..this & that were all i noticed….

I really enjoyed this match;imo it was very good.
I love the amazing ovation Lita got and I wish she would have won.

  • Litaker61

Seriously forgot how over Lita was back then. Although she still wasn’t the greatest worker then (really improved after her neck injury) she was by far the most exciting Diva at the time with the biggest pops.

  • redsandman99

Definitely think this was one of Chyna’s best matches. Too bad we never got a rematch.

I wish they would book Beth Phoenix with the same kind of psychology in this match/set-up.

  • mojodoom

I remember watching this back in the day and thought it was one of Chyna’s best. I still believe it’s one of her best showing but the match wasn’t nearly as good as I thought it was. Fans cared about them and they made this okay match into a slightly better than okay match.

  • javiousmckenzie

This match made me think of Candice vs Beth some of the spots its very reminiscent to there first two ppv matches

  • T@KESH1

hmm the 1st of 2 times ppl went over on Lita on THEIR last match!
    (years later still shaking head)

    • WweLitafan4ever

      Oh good point

  • WweLitafan4ever

It would have been awesome to see Lita win the women’s title here!

  • lucky1now

i remember this time i didnt get to see it live my friendd hyped me up sayin all sorts of false spots lol i really wanted lita to win but i did enjoy the match

  • Jakey

A good match that could have been great.

WWE wanted Lita to go over, but Chyna refused. Not only that, but Lita was supposed to have much more offense than what she ultimately was given. That being said, it was great to see the crowd actually react and be into a women’s match, and even Jim Ross commented on his Ross Report at the time that he was surprised at the fan interest (the “dirt sheets” of the time echoed this sentiment).

I’ve never been one for fanfic or fantasy booking, but I would have loved a re-match and fall-out. Chyna would have been a *great* heel in the women’s division — the vanity of a Sable, but with the brawn to go with it — and I’ll always wonder what her role would have been in the Invasion of that summer.
