WWE Superstars Redux (October 19th, 2012): Beth Phoenix Takes On Kaitlyn and Her Taped Up Ankle

Greetings everyone. We’re here for another edition of Superstars, and this week it’s Kaitlyn squaring off against The Glamazon, Beth Phoenix in singles action. Beth was one of the early suspects in this big attacker mystery (right after Honey Boo Boo and Larry King’s wife), and while we don’t know for sure who this blonde is, it’s up to the hybrid Diva herself to put the fight to one of the possibilities!

We head to the arena where Kaitlyn makes her grand entrance for an upcoming bout. The commentators put over the attacker storyline going, which is always nice to see being mentioned anywhere since it’s the closest thing we’ve gotten to an actual storyline in what seems like years. Her opponent, Beth Phoenix, then steps into the ring as the bell sounds and we get things underway in this one fall contest. Beth teases the blonde hair and tries to tell Kaitlyn she had nothing to do with the attack, but Kaitlyn charges for her and Phoenix takes her down. Phoenix demands Kaitlyn show her some respect, as Beth locks in a waist lock and Kaitlyn flips it over into a pretty sweet arm drag/flip type maneuver. Beth is sent into the ropes, but she ends up taking the time to toss Kaitlyn outside and taunt the fans, only proving to fire Kaitlyn up with a swift takedown.

Beth then pulls Kaitlyn down and the two head outside the ring, as Kaitlyn gets a quick shot in before being taken down by Beth. She’s rolled back into the ring as the former Divas Champion poses on the second rope, just taunting her downed prey and we head to a commercial break. Back from the break we come to the sight of Beth with a submission on Kaitlyn, but Kaitlyn reverses it briefly and hoists her up. Beth ultimately takes the control, but gets taken down with a tweaked running crossbody. Phoenix proceeds to choke Kaitlyn by simply stomping on her, then placing the ankle hurt NXT winner in a tree of woe and kicking her repeatedly.

Beth slams Kaitlyn’s head into the bottom turnbuckle, before flopping her into the center of the ring and applying a submission hold. The crowd gets behind Kaitlyn, sparking our two toned hair Diva to fight out and shove Beth into the corner. She stumbles a little due to the injured ankle, as Beth shoves her back. She dodges an elbow and scores with a dropkick for a two count, as Kaitlyn slides into the ring with a sunset flip for a two count. Kaitlyn with an uppercut, and then colliding with the Glamazon in a shoulder tackle for a two count. Beth with a snapmare and a choke hold. The crowd continues to support Kaitlyn, providing her the strenght to go for a headscissors, but Beth lifts her to the ring apron. Kaitlyn now climbs to the top rope, but Beth hoists her up into a military press! Kaitlyn slides out the back and locks in a bulldog type hold, before bouncing off the ropes and flipping over with a sunset flip for the upset!

Thoughts: Nice match between Beth and Kaitlyn overall. I’m not sure if Kaitlyn fell those few times, or was playing up the ankle, but either way it actually worked for her because it showed that the ankle is still giving her some problems so kudos on that. I’ll be honest when I say that I don’t think it was up to the quality we’re used to seeing on Superstars, but the good thing about that is that Superstars matches are so high up in comparison to Raw and SmackDown due to the time given that it was still enjoyable in the long run. I wasn’t a fan of the sunset flip move for Kaitlyn to end it because she’s such a power type wrestler I don’t think the fast paced stuff fits her honestly. I loved her sit out bomb into a leglock move she used to do the most and I really hope she brings it back one day because it was so unique and fit her strengths well, plus it could be executed on just about anyone. Overall though, I did enjoy the match between Beth and Kaitlyn, and I hope we get some more clues on the attacker in the coming weeks because I’m liking the segments on SmackDown a lot.
