Diva Dirt Writers’ Choice Awards 2012: Best Breakthrough – AJ Lee

Diva Dirt presents its second annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, as well as hundreds of live events on DVD, additionally, we’ve followed a countless number of wrestlers over the year, and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2012, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice blue ribbons.

Best Breakthrough: AJ Lee

aj-leeThere’s breaking through, and then there’s smashing through at 100 miles per hour.

For AJ Lee, and befitting of her character, whose unpredictability means she can change demeanor at the drop of the hat, she certainly did the latter in 2012.

Never in the history of WWE has a Diva — especially one who has been told she’s too small, she’s not buxom enough, she would never make it in the WWE — made such an incredible impact in just one year. Sure, AJ’s been around for a couple of years now, but in 2012, as cliche as it may sound, she truly arrived.

No one could have prepared themselves for the rocket-ship that would be AJ’s ascension to not just the top of the Divas roster, but to the top of the WWE roster. Whether it was an axe to grind with her fellow Divas, or becoming entangled with some of the biggest names in WWE — John Cena, CM Punk and Kane, just to name a few — AJ has well and truly redefined what it means to have a breakthrough.

And thus, there really could be no other choice for this award.

Most Improved: Brooke Tessmacher
Best Tag Team or Group: Midwest Militia

Stay tuned for more Writers’ Choice Awards throughout December.

    Congrats, very well deserved.

Whether you like her or not, this really is the only choice I can reasonably see. She went from being Beth and Natalya’s seemingly personal jobber to being the centerpiece of main event feuds. It wasn’t all just about kissing people as some like to knock her for. Her actions and whose side she came down on decided the fate of the WWE title and the MITB contract. The closing image of Raw has been of her several times throughout the year. She main evented Raw twice and ran the show for three months. She didn’t have the rug pulled out from underneath her and she’s ran with what she was given. She’s not wrestling as much as people want her to be but she’s become a star nonetheless.

Completely agree and well deserved. I seriously had thought for a time that WWE was going to let AJ slip through the cracks, but I’m glad I was wrong. I love AJ and I think she’s very passionate about wrestling. You can tell she enjoys being involved and I enjoy watching her. So what if she’s a bit overexposed? The same could be said about any number of WWE superstars and I don’t hear nearly the same complaints. It is somewhat of a shame that they’ve turned her into a “loose cannon sl*t” character, but I guess I’ll take the good with some bad and just enjoy the ride. Too often we get caught up in petty whining that we don’t fully enjoy the divas for the short time they’re around. AJ has my full support and ill continue to cheer her on as she ascends in 2013 and hopefully becomes Divas Champion – which btw I have no problems with. Maryse was champion and if she can hold the title, I’d say most divas are just as capable.

I like seeing the variety of people for all these awards so far.Well all know The divas are going to take most/all the fan awards. I would like to see Eve win one of the writers choice one though, I think she deserves one since she didn’t win heel of the year. I predicting AJ will take diva of the year too.

I really love AJ and I am really happy for her having all her dreams come true. She is one of my favorites. But we have to admit that she is being overexposed. I bet some divas are jealous of her, hell even some of the men.

Like I said in my post, Id rather have her overexposed than some of the male wrestlers like Cena, whom I loathe by the way. And ofcourse some will be jealous, that’s par for the course of pro wrestling. It is AJ’s time to shine and I’m enjoying it.

Well deserved! Couldn’t think of any other female wrestler to get the award. :)

i dont understand this, why do people not like aj just because she got the biggest push out of any diva in awhile? isnt that what we’ve been waiting for? we finally get a diva who not only is gorgeous but is also a great wrestler getting a push in wwe which is like one in a million, and people still have to complain!! i guess some people are never happy, anywho! congrats aj lee!!!! you rock!!! your amazing!!!! and dont let anyone stop your shine!!! if they dont like it they can put on they’re hater shades!!! lol :) very well deserved and the only pick imo for this award!!! great job Diva Dirt!! :)

AJ Lee is doing great. It wasn’t her fault she actually can translate emotions and character on TV and people happened to enjoy that. She makes my Mondays a lot more enjoyable and interesting while watching RAW.I think as a whole the division will benefit from her popularity as whoever feuds with her now will immediately be considered more interesting.I really hope we can get a Kaitlyn vs AJ for WM,this has the potential to be amazing !

  • divaindemise

Undeniably deserved: AJ isn’t one of the biggest Divas in recent years, she’s one of WWE’s biggest STARS in recent years.

  • SirCharlieee

I’ve loved Miss AJ since I saw her in a WSU match and I cheered & votes for her in NXT, I lost it when she was the Queen of FCW and legit almost cried when she debuted in WWETV (even though she lost) so for her to be getting this mega push I’m obviously over the moon. And it’s even better because she’s actually keeping the momentum going with each & every appearance she makes. Who would have thought that the 5 foot nothing, 115 pounds soaking wet, New Jersey native would go to such heights in the WWE? Because I truthfully never did.
