Diva Dirt’s Writers’ Choice Awards 2012: Wrestler of the Year – Gail Kim

Diva Dirt presents its second annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, as well as hundreds of live events on DVD, additionally, we’ve followed a countless number of wrestlers over the year, and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2012, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice blue ribbons.

Wrestler of the Year: Gail Kim

gail-kimAs the 2012 Writers’ Choice Awards come to an end, we crown a double award-winner in Gail Kim, who was not only voted Knockout of the Year, but takes the ultimate prize as Wrestler of the Year, too.

In 2012, the Diva Dirt writers agreed, there was no female wrestler that proved quite as formidable in the ring than Gail Kim, who in her first full year back in TNA, reached her fullest potential in the ring after three years of floundering on WWE’s roster.

While there have been some incredible wrestlers this year, who have proved their mettle in the ring with fantastic match after fantastic match — the names Jazz, Mercedes Martinez, and Ayako Hamada come to mind — making it hard for us to select just one wrestler to celebrate, Gail’s consistency throughout the year in TNA gave her the edge.

With a regular wrestling role on a weekly TV show, we saw Gail put on great matches on a near-weekly basis, easily becoming the MVP of the Knockouts division ring-wise, and we credit her with bringing a new level of competition to the TNA women by upping the quality of matches on both Impact Wrestling and pay per views over the course of 2012.

Gail proved to be a steady, reliable hand, able to take the likes of Tara and Mickie James to the limit, as well as bring the best out of less experienced wrestlers such as Madison Rayne, and especially Brooke Tessmacher.

From her dominant six month reign as champion, to consistently good matches in the latter half of 2012 (including a great match on the final Impact of 2012 just this past week), Gail Kim, like a fine wine, just seems to get better with age and 2012 was certainly her year.

Well deserved for someone who was treated so poorly in the WWE.

She’s an exceptional talent and we all got to see her talent put to good use in TNA this year.

  • AndieMcPhee

Gail is incredible. I don’t think anyone can really dispute the fact that regardless of what you think about her as a performer, fundamentally Gail is as solid a wrestler as you’ll find. Everything she does is so artistic and intricate. Her return to TNA has been a revelation after years in WWE.

  • Johnyfaction3

Ohh nice. I thought AJ was going to win this one too…

  • divaindemise

No mention of her topping the PWI Female 50? :) Honestly, I expect Gail Kim to be the penultimate entry to this Women of the Year thing (since, ya know, it’s obvious AJ Lee wins it) if we’re taking the whole concept of wrasslin’ seriously.

Congrats Gail Kim but I personally think Eve should’ve won. She has been relavent all year. She brought this resurgence to the Divas division. She is bringing prestige to the Divas Championship & she is the 1st ever 3x Divas Champion. She is also having a 5 month feud with Kaitlyn.

    • cheerleadermelissafan

If this award based purely on wrestling, then Eve should have not won; she shouldn’t be in the top twenty, to be honest. Not taking away from Eve’s abilities, but there are far better female wrestlers out there and i would have been shocked to see her win. Also, I don’t see any prestige she is bringing to the Diva’s title. Has she had an interesting run? To an extent. However, your claims may be a bit inflated.

      • Like Mike

What they said. This is WRESTLER of the year, not diva of the year. Gail could wrestle circles around Eve any day of the week.

        • divaindemise

The truth is in the title, I guess: DIVA Dirt.

        • scarlet spider

True enough. But there are wrestlers in the indies who are better than Gail too. What Diva-Dirt actually means by ‘Wrestler of the Year’ is ‘Wrestler of the Year from one of the two main companies’.

And on that basis, then yes, Gail would be the best choice.

    • cheerleadermelissafan

In my opinion, there are better girls on the independent scene than Gail, but not drastically so. There are few girls on the independents who posses the technical proficiency that Gail has. Are there some? Of course, but none of them are that much better than Gail where the better wrestler can clearly be determined objectively. All that said, she has been the most consistent female wrestler of 2012, which is why she deserves this more than anyone.

    • NY Pollard

Sorry if this doesn’t sit well with some of you, but Gail Kim is superior wrestler to most wwe divas and why so quick to put her down when up against the indie women? Gail could give everyone of those ladies a run for their money, this is why she’s the winner. Gail Kim is unstoppable and a gem in pro wrestling.

      • divaindemise

I think Gail Kim could easily hang with the top women on the independent scene. People can delude themselves all they want – when it comes to straight up in-ring prowess and pure skill, Gail Kim is up there. The quality of her matches since returning to TNA consistently reflected that.

  • ssilva872

    Congrats to my girl Gail!

    2012 was her year. :)

You must be out of what’s left of your pea brain! How exactly do you figure Gail is to blame for all of that? Velvet is back and they rehired Angelina for a second time as well. Jacqueline worked with TNA several times, the Winter/Angelina thing ran its course and Sarita is usually treading water. Long before Gail made her return so I think you’re just straight up hating. You’re not to be taken at all seriously, sorry.

  • LightsOut

Ok, you must be one of those people who feels de necessity to troll someone just to see if you are worthy of something, because probably you’re bored and sad of your life. I sugest you to do a makeover, feel better within your own skin, get out of the computer and enjoy life a little bit, maybe that will make you feel more important about yourself and won’t make you look like a child that you’re being right now.

    • GailKim95

I’m not gonna attack you just because you said something about Gail Kim. As you can probably tell I am a huge Gail Kim fan so here is my spiel. Gail has worked her butt off to get where she is in the wrestling industry. Its not Gail’s fault that TNA wanted to push her to the moon when she returned. Also when she left TNA, Gail had done everything there was to do at the time. TNA wasn’t going to use her anymore and she wouldn’t get another shot at the title. It was the right time to leave. Gail didn’t make Sarita or Rosita to be used less, they were hardly used even before Gail got there. Angelina was on her way out for months after TNA randomly dropped the Winter/Angelina thing. Which also led to Winter’s departure. None of these were Gail’s fault. Gail upped the match quality in TNA and I personally loved it. BTW Velvet just recently walked away from the company over a contract dispute and has now come back. Are you gonna call her a bitch and pathetic and insinuate she slept her way to the top too? No, Gail doesn’t deserve any of the hate you are spewing at her. I am all for you expressing your own opinion but don’t attack Gail as a person, that is about as low as you can get

  • Gail-Trish-Maryse

People can argue it all you want, but Gail is easily one of (if not THE) most versatile women’s wrestler in the world. You might be able to find better wrestlers than her in one area of wrestling. But Gail can pull off ANY style of wrestling.

    Gail can do:
    Submission
    Lucha
    Technical
    Power moves

You’ll be hard up to find a wrestler that is a versatile as Gail.

    • divaindemise

In her first TNA run she flitted between all those dynamics beautifully. It’s particularly nice to see her wrestling mature as she does too :)

wooooooooooooooo ONE OF THE BEST TECHNICAL GIFTED WRESTLERS IN WOMENS WRESTLING HISTORY period she made people like K2 look believable lol ALL HAIL QUEEN GAIL

    • Gail-Trish-Maryse

Haha that match with Gail was actually Kelly’s best match ever. She actually made Kelly look like she could mat wrestle.
