NXT Watch (January 24th, 2013): Sasha Banks Meets Alicia Fox; Aksana Readies For a Fight

Greetings everybody and welcome to another wondrous edition of the NXT Watch. I believe the last time we met, we discovered (and at least I fell in love with) the catchy dance of one Australian native, Emma. While it’s true, she may not have a last name, that didn’t alter my joy with those sweet, sweet dance moves one bit. This week though, both she and Paige are given the night off as it’s instead time for Sasha Banks to step up to the plate and take on a former Divas champion in Alicia Fox. In addition, we also get to hear some sort of semblance of words come together as Aksana, fresh off her Tout fueled feud with Layla, speaks to us on what she has a problem with when it comes to a certain Anti-Diva.

That got you enticed? I didn’t think so, because I’m not the best at making something sound so irresistible that you just have to watch. But please forgive me and watch anyways!

To the action we have Alicia Fox making her grand entrance as the greatness of Summer Rae watches on in the background. Up next comes her opponent, Sasha Banks, who in three appearances has already had more theme songs in her WWE career than Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Natalya, and probably many more. Sasha rallies the crowd up, as the bell ding ding dings and we get underway with this intriguing match up. The two lock up, as Foxy takes the early advantage and slams Sasha head first into the corner multiple times. An Irish Whip, but Banks gets a kick and then an awesome headscissors takedown!

Sasha hits a dropkick to follow it up, but only attains a two count. Alicia now scores with a dropkick of her own, but much like she a few moments earlier, Sasha kicks out. Banks is sent into the corner, as Fox nails a beautiful northern lights to garner another near fall. Fox now with a choke hold, as the crowd gets behind the yellow and black clad Diva. She attempts to make a comeback, but Alicia doesn’t let off. This commentator seems in utter shock that a girl could play American football as Sasha did… and then asks what this move we’re seeing Alicia Fox do is called like it’s some sort of 850 degree asai moonsault into a plancha ddt to the barricade off a sixty foot ladder, when in reality it’s a chokehold. Oh my.

Sasha lands a sick monkey flip, then mounting a comeback with a set of clotheslines and a smack to the chest! She grabs onto Alicia’s hand and runs off the ropes with an armdrag, following it up with an attempted handspring bulldog that gets countered as Alicia slams Sasha face first. Fox now goes for a bodyslam, but Sasha quickly rolls through and gets the surprise upset victory over the former Divas champion! Alicia does not look happy, thus continuing to have us question if she’s ever going to decide whether she wants to be a face or a heel.

Yes, I know what you’re all thinking… didn’t we see this Paige video already? Well never fear as the clips have been updated! Okay, just playing. I know the video is in a language that I do not comprehend, but when you’re searching 35 minutes to find something — ANYTHING — to contain Aksana’s interview, you take what you can get. If it’s too much, mute may be the better option, as well as blaming WWE for making this task so difficult. Following the Paige video, we are taken backstage to a new female correspondent for NXT, Renee Young. She welcomes Aksana to the interview station, and in she walks to discuss her match with Paige next week.

Aksana says that if you ask her, Paige has tried to emulate her signature black haired look… only Paige’s is much trashier than the class that hails from Lithuania and runs from shovels. She adds that she’s a little angry with how receptive the fans are the Paige, but that doesn’t matter because she’s 2012’s news. 2013 is going to be the year of Aksana, and next week, everyone is going to find out that she’s IN and Paige is OUT.

Thoughts: I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see a different match up this week, in that of Sasha against Alicia. They meshed really well to me, which I think is part of Alicia’s strong suit in that she shines when put with the smaller sized, faster paced Divas like Sasha or AJ because she can bump for their moves so well. Sasha is fast becoming a rising star on the show, and I think she’s had the most spotlight of the NXT Divas second to Paige so it’ll be interesting to see where we go from there.

I also absolutely love that they built up to Paige vs. Aksana next week. It makes it feel like a big match, and like something is going to happen that’s different from your usual NXT bout where they just compete and it’s done. With the introduction of NXT Tag Team Titles on this show, I think it’s safe to say the next belt to be introduced may be one for the Divas of the gold and black brand. No telling as to just when that will happen as I’m sure they will want to introduce Anya, Charlotte, Summer Rae, and Davina to fill up the roster before they get the ground running on that, but it would definitely be the next step to give them all something to fight for. Once those four start competing on the TV show, you can just add in Emma, Paige, Sasha, and Audrey, and there you have eight Divas set for a tournament.

All in all, I enjoyed getting to see Sasha Banks shine and pick up her first victory. Here’s to next week! And Until then — peace!

I really love Sasha Banks!!! I hope that she and paige will debut in the WWE soon. And I also hope tah NXT get a divas Championship. I mean they already have a NXT Championship and now a tag team Championship.

That would be cool Sasha is full of Spunk she’s really pretty, Emma and Paige would tear the house down

This match and the other match Alicia had with Kaitlyn were like night and day! I’m telling Raw just doesn’t know how to book good matches, and Alicia and Sasha have great chemistry and both are fierce. They could be a tag team. Also, Aksana had so much presence in that promo. Too bad the main roster doesn’t allow the strong attributes of the divas shine on the main roster:(

  • charovnica

The match was awesome! Sasha is incredible, she can turn even running the ropes into an art! Alicia was great too. Can’t wait for this week’s match to see Paige!

  • redsandman99

Great match between the two. Best match from all the women last week.

I think Alicia Fox is an ANGRY FACE. Kind of like Kelly when she lost her mind and beat the crap out of Beth Phoenix and did a banshee scream in the face of the referee. Like Alicia has been losing to everyone for a while now, so maybe her character is just damn mad about it, which would equal her showing both face and heel-like attributes at certain points.

    • Raekon

She is the perfect tweener in my opinion. :)

The only problem that caused people being confused with her is that the WWE lets her flip flop without any background or reason. :/

If they had put some background into her behaviour everyone would understand and accept her more as a tweener.

  • Spike7000

That was Renee Paquette (Renee Young). She’s been doing work as a host for WWE’s internationational recap shows since she got signed

  • KaitlynLover<3

Sasha Banks is SO generic, and I don´t know why they are giving Disco themes to the NXT Divas :S

  • wwesvrrocks101

I have a feeling we might see the first promo for Anya. 6 feet tall, thats something you dont see everyday.

  • Wolverine

Is it bad that I wish they would remain in NXT after last nights Raw?

    • Raekon

      Fully understandable. ^_^

  • DjayDay

I really like Sasha’s new theme. I do think she needs a little fine tuning, wrestling wise, she roster ready, but she just needs a look. Alicia, was awesome as usual. Why the girl isn’t on top, ill never know. Can’t wait for Summer to get it there.

  • Simply Flawless

Sasha’s hair is still… horrendous. If you’re gonna be a WWE Diva you need to look fabulous and she’s straight up ratchet and clank.

    • AJFan95

It looks fine. Definitely not as bad as others such as Alicia’s from 2009.

      • Eveyy

I actually like her hair, i like the colors. :p

    • Spike7000

And this isn’t some runway show. You have to stand out

Ratchet and clank? I don’t think so. It’s cute. Although I love Alicia I agree, she’s sported some real horrendous weaves in the past. She looks so hot and gorgeous with her current hair though.

    • DivaDestiny

I wouldn’t say it’s THAT bad but she definitely needs to blend it in. It kind of seems like they just got placed in her hair and that was it. :/ Besides the hair, I really enjoying seeing here in the ring.

yeah we like variety no she does not look that way she’s a lovely girl =)

Am I the only one who’s sad that Alicia lost again? Now to a newbie? I just don’t think she should be in jobber status. But I do like Sasha Banks, and that’s a huge victory for her. She reminds me a lot of the singer Mya.

    • puppies

I think it was okay because she’s only lost to Natalya (great wrestler), Kaitlyn (the champ, it’s a given), and an upset/fluke type of loss against Sasha, who was surprised she won herself.

      • DjayDay

Agreed. It would be different if Sasha put her down with a finisher, or killed Alicia. She barely got any offence.

        • Mike in Like

That’s true I suppose, I just wanna see Foxy win :(

Obligatory Alicia Fox bridge comment by William Regal…

I love how he always praises A-Fox’s form! :)

    • DivaDestiny

      Me too. :)

  • VarsityBaseDude

This one time at WWE camp, Alicia Fox was dominant. Today, everyone gives more reason for Foxy to be on a holiday.

  • Firewalker

I popped when I saw Renee. Canadian WWE viewers are familiar with her because she worked for The Score (WWE’s broadcast partner in Canada), before signing with WWE a couple of months ago. It’s good that they’ve finally settled on her name. She did a couple of Vintage Collection episodes with Mean Gene where she used her real name, Renee Paquette, but in recent episodes she’s now known as Renee Young. I hope she goes far in WWE.

    • shameronstar

FINALLY, a diva whose exclusive roles are interviewing, ring announcing, and hosting:) Now the girls who are wrestlers dont have to randomly do those things as often because I never understood why they did that.

    • Raekon

Renee is awesome and I also hope she goes far in the wwe.
She is a great interviewer, knows what she is talking about, always spot on with her comments and views and a great sportscaster.

I wouldn’t mind having her in the commentary either! :)

  • Raekon

A great match with an awesome finish.
Aksana was funny as usual and I really hope they will let her use more of her moveset in her match against paige, which paige obviously will win.

It can become into a great feud between them and it was funny how Aksana felt that Paige just copy her looks (since Aksana was first in the wwe and had this look there, so it doesn’t matter that paige always looked like that in the past :p ).

Its great to see how the main roster divas also help to build up the developmental divas like the main roster guys are doing too.

  • Lushh

Meanwhile i just fell in love with Summer Rae.

  • Andre

Wait til you guys see the Aksana/Paige match it was very good, nicely paced with ring psychology and well..i won’t spoil the rest!
