Happiest of birthdays goes out to Mae Young today, who celebrates her landmark 90th birthday and in a very classy move, the WWE icon — who holds the distinction for being the oldest living WWE Hall of Famer — has been celebrated by WWE to mark the occasion.
In a WWE.com article, Mae shows off her Hall of Fame ring whilst some of her classic memories are reminisced upon such as her friendship with The Fabulous Moolah, an appearance on Conan O’Brian’s talk show, and yes, they couldn’t forget about her giving birth to a hand.
During World War II, most men were enlisted into the army, “so women — along with, believe it or not, bears and midgets” were the top sports entertainment attractions, and it was from this time that Mae’s career truly kicked off. During this time, Mae became the first woman to wrestle professionally in Canada, where she faced none other than Hall of Famer, Stu Hart, in an intergender contest. The winner of the contest isn’t revealed, yet after her 2010 tirade against LayCool, our bets are on Mae!
WWE recently presented Mae with a replica Divas Championship and described her as “forever” the Divas Champion.
WWE CEO Stephanie McMahon also tweeted her congratulations to the 90-year-old. She wrote: “Happy Bday to the One and Only, Great Mae Young!!!”
“Mae is a pioneer for women in any industry. She is the toughest person I know.”
