Raw Redux (April 22nd, 2013): AJ Takes One Step Closer to the Crown While Summer Arrives Early in England

Hello everyone! Welcome to another Cryssified edition of your favorite weekly post here on Diva Dirt. I’ve been conveniently absent these past couple of weeks because I’ve been on vacation. Not only did I check out WrestleMania in person (and froze to death since we don’t have weather like that here in Alabama), but I was also part of the New Jersey crowd, and then headed to Chicago to see SHIMMER. I do plan on doing a wrap-up post on all of that sometime in the future, but for now, lets put memories of Fandangoing through Times Square at two a.m. with the best people ever (Rach, Aaron, Jimmy <3, Terri, Dan, Dan Danielson =P, and Michael) and fantasies about attractive, DREAMY SHIMMER cameramen on the back burner (it’s okay, Puente never reads this ;-)) and get down to business, shall we?

Last night, Raw was taped from merry ole England, and it treated us to several things. First and foremost, Kaitlyn and her doppelganger, Saint Tyler were both on Raw. That was nice to see. AJ Lee not only accompanied Prince Dawlf to the ring for his match against Dancing With the Stars alumni Chris Jericho, but she also competed in a match of her own (sort of…). And last, but certainly not least, NXT and Twitter favorite Summer Rae made her highly anticipated debut on the main roster.

And it was in the most lackluster way possible. Cue the hate.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the leggy blond was eventually paired with Europe’s favorite ballroom dancer, but if you are anything like me (and you really should be because I’m amazing), you just kind of hoped it never happened. I firmly believe that Summer deserves a spot on the main roster, but this is not exactly what I had in mind. After appearing with Fandango at the WrestleMania press conference, I kind of felt like it was only a matter of time before they might try this, but giving how well Sasha Zamolodchikova looked with him, I wanted them to just stick with her. After all, she was fabulously fierce and next to him, she looked amazing. But sadly, Sasha has rumbaed her way out of her lives for good and Summer has awkwardly twirled her way in.

And yes, I do mean awkwardly.

Some people are just born to dance. Summer, at least in this respect, is not. A very dear friend who was at Raw live last night said that she actually looked awful, and that’s unfortunate. Summer was truly a vision of sunshine on television last night. Photos and YouTube do NOT do this girl justice. She’s beautiful. And I believe they could have found a way better angle for her.

That aside, not all is lost.

My favorite part of the entire segment is how she didn’t hesitate to go right to Jericho when he offered his hand. For several wonderful seconds I kind of thought to myself, maybe this could work. Fandango looked absolutely heart-broken when Summer was striking a pose with the DWTS season 12, 7th place finisher.

It’s incredibly shameless on my part that I know that statistic, but don’t judge me. A show full of glitter, sequins, bangle bracelets, and spray tan is seriously made for me and you all know it.

To wrap up this bit, I do feel like it was a pretty blah debut for someone who is so promising. I reckon you guys are going to make the argument that everyone has to start somewhere, and Naomi is a dancer, and Kelly Kelly and Layla were once dancers, and yada yada yada. What else? I’m trying to take away all your comments before you can make them, but my brain fails me right now. And to just reply to whatever else you have to say, I never said I was a fan of those angles either. I also still believe that not everyone has to be a wrestler. What else so I don’t sound like a hypocrite?

How about I just have insane expectations for my favorites? I just want them to come in, kick butt, and absolutely slay everyone! (Summer did kind of slay in terms of how fabulous she looked so never mind that.) I don’t know. I didn’t like this particular debut because it looked awkward and felt weird. For now, I’m just going to chalk it up to a one night only thing with the awkward (it was her Raw debut), and see how it plays out on SmackDown and Raw from here on out.

There, that works.

Moving on!!!!

We had a Battle Royal to determine the number one contender to Kaitlyn‘s title, while the champ herself sat at ringside to do commentary.

To be honest, the great Battle Royal Diva that is Rosa Mendes was truly missed tonight. When she’s around, you just know who is going to get eliminated first. Whatever is going on in her life, hopefully it gets fixed and she gets back on the road soon. A Diva Battle Royal without Rosa Mendes is basically just a fish without water. You know it’s going to die soon enough, but watching it suffer while gasping for air is just excruciating! So dramatic, I know, but that was the battle royal in a nutshell. It was filled with so many what ifs!!!!

That’s such crap.

As far as Battle Royals go, this was one of the worst they’ve had in awhile. It wasn’t so much the action that bugged me, it was the lack of Divas I guess. Half the roster was off in other areas, and for some reason Cameron wasn’t allowed to participate. I feel like they might have been better off waiting until they were back in the States, especially since they have a nice amount of time until the next pay-per-view, but whatever. The action that we did get was pretty creative. I loved AJ absolutely eating that superkick from Tamina, and in case you guys were just dying to know, Aksana was the first eliminated! Obviously, if you watched the video you knew that, but go with it. It was nice to see Layla being teased as being the winner, and the ending was great. AJ won that so cheaply and it was pretty fitting.

So many people have been waiting for AJ and Kaitlyn to happen, myself included, but I hope it doesn’t take place on Raw next week. Not only will it be taped (I think…), but they deserve a proper feud. They have the history and whatnot, and there is time for a proper build. Lets just keep our fingers crossed it doesn’t happen on Raw, or even on SmackDown. That would be terrible.

Raw was kind of promising tonight but not really. At least we got a debut. And now we may have direction with the Diva’s Championship. I do feel like this doesn’t bode well for Kaitlyn, but if she does drop to AJ, we get to have a few months of her chasing the title, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind if they traded it back and forth between themselves a few times before someone else enters the title picture. That’s something we haven’t really seen in awhile, and if the WWE takes the time, they could substain Kaitlyn and AJ through the summer and have a blow off match between the two of them at Summerslam. Total dream scenario.

Anyway that about wraps us up for today. I just want to take a moment and say thank you to all the people I was around in New York, New Jersey, and Chicago. So many people go into making weekends like that special and I know that there are many, many people I hold near and dear to me. To Edward and Paul who helped me make it to ‘Mania, THANK YOU!!!!

Until next time…. Cryssi out!

I don’t see Summer sticking as Fandango’s dancer once they’re back in the States. As for the battle royal, I liked the Tamina/AJ spot. Nice little comedy bit. And I really hope for a lengthy feud between AJ and Kaitlyn.

    • tnarules23

In my opinion wwe is going to get taken over by tna soon so wwe 15 is going to be tna 15 because wwe pretty much ruined wrestling yet they get bigger arenas

  • Foxy

The battle royal lacked action… and yeah where were all the divas!? What is going on with the Divas lately… c’mon now. I feel like the division is sadly dying. I’ve actually felt like that for years, but not it’s actually coming to me. *sighs*

    • kio3j2

I liked that it was only a few divas, cause if there were a lot it would have been a cluster fuck like it always is.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wwestarlee wwestarlee

Argeed with Foxy. The battle royal was so weak not enough divas but back in the day during trish-jazz times there was six diva battle royals but had action and spots this one didnt except tamina’s kick and where was alicia nattie and cameron

Agreed with Foxy. The battle royal was so weak not enough divas but back in the day during trish-jazz times there was six diva battle royals but had action and spots this one didnt except tamina’s kick and where was alicia nattie and cameron

Is it bad that I want to ship Reacho

  • shannymac

The Battle Royal was kind of sloppy, but better than usual. At least it had an solid ending that actually fit the characters involved and felt planned rather than random.

this battle royal was pretty good ,but it would have been greater if they replaced aksana with Natalya. great night for the divas. I was really impressed.I hope they keep it up now and have more divas matches, lets hope that this isn’t the only good divas match that we see rather than laying on a good divas match for two weeks. Congrats AJ! I’m anticipating a great story between these two.

It’s great we have a diva title feud set now, unfortunately for Kaitlyn, her reign is about to come to an end. I wish the WWE would give the other divas things to do with not only the men, but with each other as well. The women’s division has talent, and now that we have the title feud, give Layla, Natalya, Alicia, The Funkadactyls and the Bellas, and Tamina something to do with each other-mini feuds and multi-diva tag matches and backstage segments. Hopefully this feud is the start of something awesome for the Women’s Division!

  • DJ8946

This battle royal could’ve waited until they were in the U.S. Without all the girls it was boring. I honestly think they threw the match together 10 minutes earlier & only had time to plan one spot which was the whole AJ possum thing. Also Kaitlyn’s reign isn’t coming to a end & if it does she will still be in the spotlight of the Divas. I would love if AJ & Kaitlyn faced at ER & The Bellas attack them both. The Kharma attacks them & AJ & Kaitlyn both just stare at her in the ring & Kharma walks away.

  • MiWiRo

    Where the hell was Cameron?

    • perceval

She had two appearances, during Brodus’s & Tensai’s matches. Naomi ended up with three appearances, that night.

As for why Cameron was kept out of the battle royal, I guess they wanted to use the best workers on hand, plus Aksana.

  • christopher_cc

I like when Cryssi post she never holds back and speaks her mind she tells it like it is she needs to be the full time admin but I’m sure she’s probably busy with other stuff as well

  • iLUVValets

A hot ass mess. They could have gotten some one else in nxt to fill the dancing role. AJ is so overrated I’m jus glad we may finally have this overdue fued with Kaitlyn. If they blow this opportunity then they might as well take the belt off of her. Are y’all really here for this?

This AJ feud is coming about 3 months late. It’s not believable anymore lol WWE really did mess up Kaitlyn’s title reign. It was so hyped. Poor thing.

  • jtiera

The whole thing with tamina ad aj was hilarious then aj ate the super kick it looked like it hurt… I love Jericho that is all

  • i22

I agree about the lack of divas making the battle royal seem a bit meh. They should of just took Aksana out and done a fatal four way insted. Idk why Cameron wasnt included since she was there. The best spots in the match went to AJ. She sold the hell out of that superkick. And her jumping on to Tamina and her playing dead were hilarious. Other divas who try to incooparate comedy in the ring should take note … this is how you do it right, Im looking at you Layla and Natalya. I really hope they build this fued up and have the match at ER though something tells me it’ll happen next week at Raw -_-

  • Looking Glass

As nice as it was to see Summer, I want her to get called up as Summer Rae – not a backing dancer. I hate how anyone who does anything that happens to be female is a Diva, like I never consider Lilian a Diva and with the other one, Sasha? She was there enhance Fandango rather than become something in her own right. Plus, with Sash she kept in character at all times, she was always poised whereas Summer just fell flat, I swear she itches her head while doing the splits at one point…

The Divas battle royale was like spot who’s still on the payroll, they may as well have had a four corners match between Layla, Tamina, Naomi and A.J. and while people will call me a ‘hater’ for what I’m about to say in regards to Queen A.J. she really needs to find something else other than her annoying fake creep act. It’s just so melodramatic and the exchange with Tamina was just cringe inducing, it’s like she does the same head tilt and smile week in, week out.

  • Blacklighter05

I don’t understand what was so horrible about this match. Lengthy? Yes. Action? Yes. Story? Yes. What more do you people want? Did you really want a cluster fuck of a match like all of the other battle royales have been? This has definitely been one of the best ones in years from WWE.

I do agree on the lack of Divas though. While the Bellas was explained (DQ due to Twin Magic), why no Cameron? Or Natalya? Either way, It was a good match IMHO and everyone on here has ridiculous expectations on what the match should’ve been.

On the whole Summer Rae thing, this whole thing will be forgotten and she will be back in NXT soon as if nothing had ever happened. I’m not counting this as her RAW debut. Fandango has had a bevy of dancers as his entrance gals and she is just another one. She probably got the gig because the ‘E didnt wanna pay a non employee a free trip over seas and just decided that Summer would do.

    • Looking Glass

“The Bella’s can’t enter this battle royale because they’ve been disqualified! While in other news, Rosa fell off the wagon and who really is Alicia Fox anyway?” is what commentary should’ve said.

      • JamieKym

        Just, Just Stop.

  • MsXxxdiva247

    Good night for divas

  • Monkey Tennis

Not good. The match was textbook dull and to top it all off, AJ’s wrestling talents are wasted yet again as this disturbing trend of having her win without actually wrestling continues.

There’s a certain tragic irony to the angle, when you consider how many bad wrestlers the WWE have allowed to try and wrestle in the division over the years… And yet when they have someone who does have genuine talent, they go out of their way to stifle it.

Maybe if this feud does go longer than their match on NXT (and it honestly wouldn’t suprise me if it didn’t), hopefully we might see something more from AJ. But on this evidence, my hopes ain’t high.

    • i22

Diva battle royals arent particulary known for amazing wrestling spots, tbh the majority of them are a hot mess. As for AJ shes playing heel and used heel tactics to win so I really dont see the problem here.

AJ was the most entertaining part of the match.

      • Monkey Tennis

The problem is that right now, AJ is ONLY using tactics. They’re essentially portraying her as a non-wrestler, working the kind of way that you’d expect to see someone like Vickie work matches.

And if someone not wrestling, is the most entertaining part of a Divas match, that’s obviously not a great advert for the division.

  • PrinceTony

divas sure like to recycle dresses. i swear that layla had the same dress kaitlyn is wearing last year while doing commentary.

    • KaitlynLover<3

I was thinking the same thing, but it isnt, but its really similar!

  • Marcos Navarro

I liked how AJ beat Layla. I also liked the teasing between Tamina & AJ. I would love it if Tamina became her bodyguard. And Summer fit so well onto my 50 inch flatscreen. She looked so good and I .oved he she wasnt like the other dancers she was showing of some of her character by fixing her hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RatedReyn?ref=tn_tnmn RatedReyn

I just love AJ’s selling. It always looks terrible but not sloppy.

  • MomoMufFinSsFTW

I actually loved this battle royal. When was the last time we had a 5 diva battle royal? Since Victoria went on her physco list. However it sorta got fucked up, since Cameron was on raw earlier and didn’t appear. Onto the match! It was entertaining and did its part storyline wise, I like how they kept Aj doing her bi poler routine in the match. Wrestling wise was ok a few sloppy parts on the eliminations. Aksana sorta hesitated on her elimination and the dead crowd made it funny, and Naomi got tangled in the ropes a little on hers BUT no one can be perfect. Tamina in my opinion shined in this match I LOVE how she just grabbed Naomi’s hand and ruthlessly pulled her out to eliminate her.

  • JamieKym

Aksana had the best attire. Love Layla’s also.

  • Eveyy

Yawn, I’m over AJ don’t see the hype in her.

  • MickieJamesluvslave

happy to see the Diva battle royal.
I thought kaitlyn was terrific on the mic. Her personality really came out. She held her own with Jerry and JBL. Good job K.
Maybe it was just me but I got a Big E/kaitlyn partnetship last night. Or maybe I am just imagining it

  • perceval

Surprised you didn’t mention the segment that foreshadowed the outcome, with AJ admiring the WHC belt and she and Dolph talking about how she needed a Championship belt, herself, followed by them trash talking Kaitlyn.

    • Cryssi

I didn’t watch it, to be honest. I made it home as the second hour started.

  • http://twitter.com/DirrtySexyFunny Little Red

Oh lawd. How hot is that still of Fandango on that video.

I liked the battle royal. AJ playing possum was great. I don’t know why people are complaining. Save the “I have my own opinion” argument, I get that, but it wasn’t terrible like everyone else is making it out to be. If you want quality women’s wrestling, stop watching WWE.
