SmackDown Redux (July 5th, 2013): AJ Knocks Kaitlyn off Her Game

Hello all, and welcome to this week’s SmackDown Redux!

After losing to the #1 contender, Kaitlyn on Raw this week, the rarely seen Alicia Fox has a rematch on the blue brand. Can Alicia pick up her first win in what seems like forever, or will Kaitlyn spear her way to victory once again? Check out the match below:

We kick off the match with Alicia already in the ring, sporting her new baby blue gear (which looks amazing, might I add). Kaitlyn is out next, accompanied by Layla, who has become a permanent fixture these days. Pre-match, we’re treated to a recap of Monday’s match and AJ Lee‘s promo afterward. With that out of the way, the official signals for the bell and our Divas match is underway.

The Divas lock up and Alicia immediately goes on the offense, unleashing a flurry of kneestrikes before ramming Kaitlyn into the turnbuckle repeatedly. The referee intervenes, but Alicia stays on top of the #1 contender and levels her with a gorgeous Northern Lights suplex for a nearfall.

Kaitlyn retreats to the ropes, but Alicia slams her face-first into the canvas for another nearfall, before slapping on a modified camel clutch. Kaitlyn works her way back to a vertical base, but is grounded once again, this time with a handful of hair.

Alicia slams Kaitlyn into the turnbuckle a few times and goes for the submission victory once again, this time utilising a sleeper hold. Kaitlyn fights out and starts mounting a comeback with a flurry of strikes, but before she can get into her groove, AJ Lee‘s music hits.

AJ starts her infamous skip around the ring, and Kaitlyn tries her best to concentrate on the match, but loses it when AJ jumps up on the ring apron. Ever the opportunist, Alicia uses the distraction to roll up the #1 contender and pick up the win.

As Alicia celebrates her long awaited win, Kaitlyn and Layla chase AJ backstage. Backstage, we are treated to an amusing segment involving AJ, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella and Big E. Langston:

Thoughts: Before I even get into this match let me start by saying congratulations to Alicia Fox. She has been on quite the losing streak as of late and it is good to see her finally pick up a win.

As for the match, I thought both Divas did quite well. I was surprised to see Alicia dominate most of the match, as Kaitlyn strength is usually played in her matches, but she played the underdog pretty good here.

As for the the AJ interference: I preferred this kind of intervention as opposed to what we saw on Monday. Doing weird random things is much more a part of AJ’s personality, than the Mean Girl, Lay-Cool-esque character she has been portraying lately.

Speaking of Lay-Cool, there has been a few comparisons between this storyline and the Lay-Cool/Piggie James storyline by many fans(even on commentary) and rightly so. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Layla is in cahoots with AJ. Layla has been a random (and uneeded) addition to this storyline, but with most of the Divas either siding with Kaitlyn or hating AJ, AJ could use and an ally and who better than the co-founder of one of the most successful Diva teams in history. I predict we’ll see Layla betray Kaitlyn before everything is said and done.

Well, that’s it for this week’s Redux! Make sure you tune in next week to see what else AJ and Kaitlyn have in store going to their rematch at Money in the Bank. Until then, Diva fans!
