Today in History: Beth Phoenix is Crowned 2008′s ‘Diva of the Year’

On this day in history:

December 8th, 2008 | At the 2008 Slammy Awards, Beth Phoenix was honored with the distinction of Diva of the Year. Her rival Melina reluctantly presented her with the award, the encounter eventually turning into a fight. Santino got involved and received a shot to the family jewels for his trouble, giving Melina the last laugh. All the trophies in the world couldn’t help Glamarella in that moment.

What are your memories of this moment?

I can’t believe I forgot about this. I seriously hope we get an angle for diva of the year.

Beth should’ve won that award every year for her entire duration in the company.

Beth’s speech was freakin hilarious lmfaooo!!
I really think wwe was really high on Melina. She got a lot of segments when she returned and 5 time overall champion. I definitely see her returning in the near future. As well as Beth. They just needed breaks

    • BorisG

I loved her, she was talented, amazing heel and talker on the mic, charismatic… but it bothered me that they dropped Candice/Beth feud to focus on Melina vs Beth. She was already 2 time Women’s champ and when she returned she got the 3rd title, while Candice had amazing feud with Beth got title match lost and faded into darkness. She could have got at least one more title because we know Melina would get more.

      • Anthony Gutierrez

I hear u but you gotta admit, Candice really was never the same and never was her shoulder. She was sidelined twice with the same injury and even me as a fan every match of hers that I watched I noticed her shoulder seemed to bother her. So it made sense that wwe didn’t give her the title again because from a health standpoint, Candice would be unreliable. And also, I was very disappointed with her reign. It wasn’t her fault at all, she let her in ring work speak leaps and bounds but for her entire reign wwe only booked her in tag team matches so the only time we got to see her true evolution was during title defenses. I would’ve loved for Candice to have been a divas champion, and that’s why I think she was moved to sd

        • BorisG

She had good reign and had great match vs Melina at Heat. When she was moved to SD Melina was also, and she was Women’s champion, so she couldn’t wrestle for the Divas title. She could be great champion again, but they didn’t invest in her.

          • Anthony Gutierrez

But do you not recall her last match on raw with Beth where she got injured AGAIN. So now she’s been out with 3 injuries in 2 years. And that was just a simple exhibition match. So wwe had a very valid reason for not investing in her. She was extremely injury prone. And I’m aware that she had a good match with Melina on heat, you’re defending her as if i said she sucked. I said THE COMPANY made her reign lackluster but booking her in tag team matches for pretty much all of her reign and Candice had to take it upon herself to really show how much she improved. I loved Candice, even when she was apart of Vince’s devils and sucked. But she always had a great character and that’s what really helped her. Wwe just wasn’t going to invest in someone who kept getting injured and that’s why she was released

          • BorisG

And they still invested in Lita, Jazz, Beth and don’t forget Melina who were major injury prones. What about that?

          • Anthony Gutierrez

Lita only had one wwe related injury and lita was a completely different caliber of diva compared to Candice. So u can’t even compare the two. Jazz was injured once and then she got the title again, after her second injury she never got the title again.

          • Anthony Gutierrez

Beth only had two injuries that 5 years apart from each other so definitely far from the same and Melina had only injuries. It’s not uncommon for wrestlers to get injured. When ur someone who is CHRONICALLY injured, ur no longer an asset to the company. Idk what is so hard for you to understand about that concept. I understand u may be a Candice fan but just accept the facts and realize that I am a Candice fan too

          • C.J.

            But, CM Punk…

          • Anthony Gutierrez

Superstars and divas can never be compared. A diva will never be the face of the company unfortunately.

          • C.J.

True. But, CM Punk always seems to be nursing an injury. This might be why he isn’t “the man”. I think that it is good to hold someone back a little bit, if there are injured a bit, rather than let them go. This is a big maybe. But, perhaps this is why the Divas Division was at a standstill when Maryse was champion and why I feel they should have dropped her belt to someone else for a while and put it back on Maryse at a later date.

          • BorisG

I get it but I gave examples that are true.

  • BorisG

Beth totally deserved the award, she totally dominated that year. Also she’s the only 2x Slammy Diva of the Year, she also won in 2011 with Natalya via WWE magazine.

    • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

She’s not going to be only one soon.
AJ Lee will be 2X Diva Of The Year!!
First Diva to win 2 Diva Of The Year slammys in a row.

      • BorisG

        Let’s hope.

  • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

    Santino overreacts.
Beth is a 2008 Diva Of The Year.
    I love Melina!!

  • charovnica

Anyone knows the song from the award nominations?

  • charovnica

As far as the award goes for me it was between Beth and McCool at this point. Both were very active during this period.

  • Half Of Me

Beth deserved it she was one of the reasons the division was actually good to watch…if she had come in during the attitude era she would have been awesome to watch take on jazz…

  • C.J.

Eva Marie winning that award five years later would taint all of Beth Phoenix’s accomplisments.

  • C.J.

I was very impressed with Beth Phoenix when she first showed up on WWE television. I enjoyed everything that she was involved in, whether it was beating the snot out of the other Divas, slapping Santino’s behind, bodyslamming Johnny Knoxville or stepping up in Batista’s face.

  • ChloeMatthews

Beth Phoenix’s year in 2008 was so impressive. She was literally an unstoppable force. I loved Beth because she was savage, and intimidating to every WWE diva. She entirely deserved this slammy award.

  • redsandman99

2008 was Beth’s year. She, Mickie and Melina were the rocks for Raw’s divas division

  • Cassie Smith

    happy for her

  • PikachuBoo

    Most deserved award in history.

  • WweRules32

    Beth deserved it
