Raw Redux (January 20th, 2014): Funk is on a Roll

Well hello there. It’s time for another stunning edition of the Raw Redux, brought to you by yours truly. I’m not going to go away any time soon, or take a break, so you may as well sit back, get comfortable, and keep calm. That being said, read on.

The Authority kicks off with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H welcoming everyone to Monday Night Raw. Obviously they bring up the Royal Rumble and look to introduce the returning Batista. Instead, Randy Orton decides to interrupt. He is pretty pressed over the fact his old Evolution buddy is returning to the company and this leads to a confrontation between him and the McMahons over what happened with Papa Cena last week. Stephanie is laying down the law and turns it over to Triple H, who decides to assume the role of the motivator and the good cop. He decides to manipulate the voices inside Randy’s pretty little head and build him up again, and get him excited over being the face of the company. A rematch of last week, Randy Orton versus Kofi Kingston, is made for later on tonight. Triple H also tells him that he has to right the wrongs of last week with John Cena. Randy doesn’t impressed.

His look gets even more blank as Batista’s music hits.

And when the music of one Dave Batista hits, things just break down from there. Wearing jeggings, a very small jacket, and matching sneakers, Batista makes his return to the company after a four year absence. The rest of the promo is pretty irrelevant since Stephanie leaves the ring, but really. That outfit just deserved to mentioned, especially since it was accessorized with a nice, shiny nose ring.

In other Diva news, Fandango stepped inside the ring with Fandango which meant a Summer Rae sighting. The stunning blond bombshell was werking her little yellow and hot pink outfit tonight.

Short, squash match but afterwards as our beautiful ballroom couple celebrated their victory, the cameras cut to the crowd.

EMMA IS THERE AGAIN! And I love the sparkly top she’s rocking. Girl is so gorgeous.

Backstage (which I don’t have video of – sorry!) Stephanie decides that it’s time to show off her authority and has a come to Jesus talk with Kane. Stephanie tells him that since he’s in a management position now, he has to step up and act like he’s a professional. She tells him that he needs to lead by example. No truer words have ever been spoken, to be honest. Outside of Diva Dirt, I work for a very high profile company in a managerial role, and if we don’t practice what we preach, we get crucified for it.

I’m just saying!

After a very lengthy wait, we finally get Divas ring action. AJ Lee and Tamina Snuka are in action. The cameras cut to a segment from the WWE App which involves Wade Barrett and the waste of a perfectly good cake that I would have loved to eat.

But anyway… Tamina is covered in cake.

Their opponents are Naomi and Cameron.

Cameron starts off against Tamina, and it’s as big of a mismatch as it seems. The smaller woman is easily dominated by Tamina and AJ also gets in on the action. Cameron sells everything pretty well and Naomi does a great job on the outside of getting the crowd involved. It actually feels important when Naomi makes the hot tag, and Tamina gets the tag to AJ. The longest-reigning Divas Champion ever begins to taunt Naomi once she enters the ring, and that’s thanks to a huge boot to the face from Tamina. Unfortunately, the champion’s plan ends up backfiring. Naomi gets a sneaky little roll-up on AJ and gets a big three-count.

Afterwards, Naomi and Cameron celebrate but AJ has a fit. Not only did the party to celebrate her milestone not have visitors, but she loses a match. Will Naomi be next in line for a title shot?

I hope so. I want a nice Divas match at the Royal Rumble and I definitely think those two would produce something nice to kick off the road to WrestleMania. We’ve said it a thousand times before, but this time of year isn’t very kind to the Divas but the popularity the girls have gained this year speaks for itself. People care what happens to these strong, brilliant woman who fight so hard for notoriety. It doesn’t even matter that it took a notable feud between two best friends and a reality show to make people invested. The fact remains… they are invested. I fully expect AJ to carry that championship until WrestleMania and what happens then will be a toss-up.

Nice match, strong Stephanie segments, and a pretty outfit from Summer Rae. They’re keeping up the Emma crowd shots, so her official debut is getting closer and closer. It will be fun to see what the company puts together for these women who’ve brought them a lot of attention this year.

Until Sunday (should we get a match)… Namaste bitches!

OK Naomi should get her title match this Sunday. Match was nothing special. They don’t use the Divas like they use Superstars.

  • Fame Whore

The division needs to pick up ASAP. I’m one of the optimistic wrestling fans, and even I’m complaining now. It’s just so stale & boring now. I’m always waiting for something big or surprising to happen, and it just falls flat everytime.

    • BorisG

They really have Divas with huge potential but they disappoint us with lack of time and storylines.

      • Fame Whore

And character development. It’s soooooo frustrating. There’s so much potential, and so little done with it.

  • Foreveryoungx

WWE could actually be using this AJ Lee stuff to build a nice feud but instead we get 2 minute matches . Wish they would realize what kind of talent these women have.

  • wwepassion

So AJ has become a joke now to wwe.If they don’t take Aj serious the top diva ,Then they are definitely not going to take any other diva serious. It was going good for a while and now it’s back to square one.

    • BorisG

They started great and now this. Ruined her character really.

      • wwepassion

I think they shoved her down our throats to hard and focused on her to much that her character has become really stale and boring. she doesn’t really stand out anymore , She kinda just blends in to the other divas now. It’s time to focus on other divas and put effort into there characters as well because it’s ONE of the reasons why matches aren’t exciting

  • Fame Whore

I’d rather have The surprise party segment on Raw in the ring, rather than this match tbh. With Naomi interfering & clearing house. That would set up their feud so much better

    • Jen7201

I agree I think the surprise party should have been a segment on Raw instead of the app all of the people involved in the segment were great

  • Christopher Bello

Of all people to give a backstage segment to, you give it to the girl who is ALREADY over? I mean, honestly! I was clamoring for an AJ Face Turn here with Tamina attacking her, and a couple times I really thought it was gonna happen! But of course, nothing.

The match seriously deserves no recognition. Cameron’s part was LITERALLY EXACTLY the same thing as last week, the only difference here was that she actually tagged Naomi this time. Naomi did her usual one, two, which flusters the Divas (sloppifies them).

I’m glad Naomi gets a reaction from the fans from her wrestling, but she should’ve gotten that backstage segment. I still don’t get why WWE doesn’t understand that ONE segment goes a LONG way. That one segment could’ve catapulted Naomi’s fanbase to the stars!

AJ, stop wrestling on Raw completely until you go face. Tamina, learn how to bump. All of you, learn how to work a short match.

WWE, just get it the fuck together, please.

    • wwepassion

Well i didn’t like anything from last night except Naomi moves. Aj backstage segment was horrible with the bad overacting,Tamina constant botching and Cameron screaming made her look foolish. It’s good like you said tht Naomi gets reaction. But you know wwe don’t care about the divas if they don’t even give there top diva aj a promo on her longest reign accomplishment, They gave her a cheesy backstage app segment.

    • charovnica

They seem to never follow through stuff. This is why people think AJ’s reign has gotten boring. So many opportunities were missed it’s not even funny.

  • BorisG

And it shows how overrated AJ is now that people chanted’ AJ sucks’. WWE it’s a sign. You’ve shown her enough to our throats for 2+ years.

    • Jen7201

I think it’s OK for AJ to get booed after all she is supposed to be the heel and the crowd was very face friendly according to some reports they popped huge for Cena

      • BorisG

She wasn’t booed. They chanted that she sucks. And that means they are sick enough of her every week and her boring character. One thing is to be boooed because you’re heel and gettting told you suck. Cena is face and gets that.

        • charovnica

People chanted “You can’t wrestle” at Rollins last week. Unless it’s a regular thing you can’t judge if people are hating on her from one week. Regardless,I think it’s time to wrap it up and start the Tamina vs AJ feud,so at WM she can drop the title.

          • wwepassion

Tamina and aj will be a horrible feud. She won’t be able to pull off a match with a small person like aj , It won’t look believable.

          • charovnica

I liked their previous match. AJ will obviously be the underdog and she’s great at working as one,so I think it will be good. Also people will be a lot more interested in a feud between former allies rather than a random Total diva member. There is a story at least. Tamina will benefit a lot as a heel..especially if she later on kayfabe injures AJ.

          • wwepassion

Tamina gets no reaction and people are becoming bored with aj so there will be no excitement for that feud. People are actually happy that Naomi is feuding with Aj and not holding the T.D crap against her like they did with the bellas.

          • charovnica

There is no excitement cause nothing happens. If WWE follow up with Tamina vs AJ, AJ will get the fans behind her back while Tamina wil have an easier time to receive heat since she’ll be against AJ.

          • wwepassion

But that’s what’s happening now. Tamina botches to much and can’t even pull a 3-5 min match off let alone having feud with aj and having worse mic skills then nattie.

          • charovnica

At this point she is the one that makes sense though,so too bad. They tend to pull hot potatoes after long reigns,so maybe when/if Tamina wins it it won’t be for long, but till then they need to really build some of the rest of the divas up,so there will be credible challengers. Also in general the writing should really improve.

          • wwepassion

I don’t see Tamina and aj feud happening. If so it will not excite many. I don’t think wwe will put the belt on her. But right now it’s Naomi’s time and never know if she’ll be the on to take it off aj.

          • BorisG

I really hope Tamina vs AJ happens, and it will I think, since they weren’t paired up for nothing and we know every team needs to disbands once (except Bellas, Usos lol)

    • JillianHallTNA

really? i didnt hear that chant :/ lol

      • BorisG

        Watch again.

    • Will Henderson

Dayton, OH is a marky mark market. now if this happen in a Smarky Market, AJ would be cheered.

      • BorisG

        Face it, she’s stale.

        • Will Henderson

and that too. but she still got cheers in some cities, last week, she got a “We Love AJ” chant

          • wwepassion

From 2 -5 people in the crowd. Face it majority are tired of her. Doesn’t mean they hate her they are just sick of her.

          • BorisG

            Exactly.

          • BorisG

She is great, but we’ve seen enough of her in these 2+ years. She was in men storylines, valet, GM, longest Divas champion had great storylines with Kaitlyn, vs TD… she had enough spotlight. Let her rest for now. Other Divas need their time to shine.

  • Jen7201

I’m really happy that Naomi is getting wins I think if she gets a title match against AJ on Sunday she will shine

    • BorisG

Sure she will. They always have amazing matches.

  • charovnica

It seems that they’re slowly building up to AJ and Tamina spliting up. I’m liking that…though for some reason I found Bad News Barrett and AJ segment a lot more entertaining :D

    • JillianHallTNA

OMG!! It’s really going to happen then! Tamina will get a 3rd Divas title match in a row at Elimination Chamber! xD

      • Daw!t

        no… please no. :(

    • Jen7201

That segment was awesome everyone was great https://t.co/SMIoJ83V0U

      • #?ll??d?????????g

Tamina looked enlightened after she was hit with the cake. She just stood there with her eyes closed and arms raised.

      • The Review Fox

This ABSOLUTELY should’ve made it on-air. It was good. Saw an NXT vid with Tamina & co. She was so good! Didn’t realize how much of a good speaker she is, and she looks so pretty in a dress.:)

        • shameronstar

Where’s thing nxt video with Tamina?

          • The Review Fox

            Hi :)

            Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FR3kOLi68U&feature=player_detailpage

Hope it works. My first time posting a video here.

She looks so pretty, is so animated and has such good ability to emote, deliver and react.

Seeing this, I’m shocked that they’ve buried this side of her in favor of the ‘monster’/enforcer/bodyguard role she’s played on her time on the main roster.

Creative truly scares me. The NXT writing team needs to be called up for RAW especially.

          • The Review Fox

Hey :) I replied with the link earlier but don’t know if went through as I don’t see it in the replies. So here it is again.

        HILARIOUS!

      • BorisG

        Lovee it.

    • BorisG

I wish that was on TV not on App…

  • kewlkatz

Is AJ’s neckbreaker the new Brie dropkick? She is so damn boring and basic in the ring these days.

    • wwepassion

Don’t forget her non stop choke holds.

    • BorisG

She really was great but they ruined her now. She’s just random Diva now.

    • CrazyGirlAJ (#R.I.PMaeYoung)

She just started doing it again.

  • Jtiera

Ugh people in these comments irk me. I try to stay positive and hope for the best because it’s usually slow around this time of the year. I don’t know why Emma was shown during the fandango match. Maybe they didn’t want anything to be too obvious or maybe she is about to feud with summer who knows.
They should’ve shown that backstage segment on TV. They could’ve had people show up to AJs celebration just for Naomi and Cameron to crash it and jump Tamina and AJ in a good ole fashion backstage fight.

    • Mariah_Scarey

I think Emma is going to feud with Summer, that’s the reason she was showed during the Fandango match, and as far as I can remember Summer is the only one that has acknowledged Emma via twitter

      • Jtiera

Yeah but I need to know why she was flailing her arms and being shown during the divas matches last week. I mean I won’t complain if it’s Emma vs Summer but consistency wouldn’t hurt lol

  • C.Welch

I’m about to give up on the divas… It’s been what, 8 years now? The PG era ruined them.

    • wwepassion

It’s not the pg era it’s the creative team and the person who hires 99% models. But the nxt divas have a lot of true wrestlers so maybe they will make a difference.

      • BorisG

I’s not model fault, it’s creative and Triple H who doesn’t want Divas to be pushed.

        • wwepassion

It’s both Models and creative’s fault. The models don’t deliver in the ring so that’s on them.

          • BorisG

Tell that to Trish, Victoria, Eve, Candice, Brooke…

          • wwepassion

Trish is the only model who fans respected and actually made a successful career out of it. Michelle,Summer rae,Eve, i can’t think of anyone else are the only models that backed it up in the ring besides trish,Even though they didn’t get the respect they deserved from fans except eve on her last year and currently summer. But that small amount doesn’t cover the fact that majority is at fault and not just creative.

          • Izzy4lw

You forgot Victoria, who was a fitness model prior to her stint in wrestling. You think of girls who have begun as models, and the list is surprisingly small of women who don’t ever improve in the ring; Michelle, Trish, Victoria, Kaitlyn, Alicia Fox, and Eve really proved to be solid in ring performers, with Brooke Adams, Candice, Torrie Wilson, Summer, and Layla also proving to be good in ring performers as well. Even the Bella twins have improved significantly, and I am not a fan of them but can still see it. It has nothing to do with whether someone is a model or not, but if the storyline allows for the wrestler to connect with the audience in a meaningful way to get them invested. Unfortunately, creative does not book intelligently, and offers no build up and zero story. Just random matches that will somehow lead to a random title match at a random pay-per-view, then challenger goes to the end of the line and a new one somehow steps forward. Lather, rinse, repeat. You can have the most talented wrestlers in that ring, but with no character and no build-up, WWE fans will forget about them.

          • wwepassion

I wouldn’t say Torrie and candice were good so that’s why i didn’t say them. They were barley ok to me.

          • Izzy4lw

toward the end of their respective tenures, they were solid. I’m not saying they were putting on 5 star classics, but they could be counted on to put on a solid showing, and what they may have lacked in in-ring accumen they more then made up for in charisma. But even if we discount them, that’s still 9 former models turned wrestlers who really proved to be an asset in some way, shape, or form to the division. My argument isn’t so much for who was good and who wasn’t, it’s the argument many wrestling purists have to “blame the models”. Now I am a bit of a wrestling elitist in that I was never a huge fan of the models. I grew up loving Bull Nakano, Alundra Blaze, Luna Vachon, Tori (the first one), Jacqueline, Ivory, Molly, Jazz, Gail, Beth, Nattie, etc. but the fact of the matter is, many of the models have busted their ass to elevate their game to a point where they are capable of holding their own (in the case of Victoria, Trish, Michelle, Alicia, Kait, Eve, etc) or being able to put on a solid showing with the “real wrestlers”. It’s a scapegoat to blame the models for their performance when they are given almost no time to perfect their skills in developmental (a choice made by management) and then are supposed to put on a clinic in 90 seconds. Management rushes them through, and then creative has no idea what to do with them when they get here. Look at Summer- she spent 2 years in developmental and is still there part time perfecting her skills while she valets. Victoria spent 2 years in Developmental while valeting as the Godfather’s head ho. Brie and Nikki were in developmental a whopping 9 months before being called up. Kelly had what, a few months? consider the circumstances and blame the management for fast tracking them and the bookers for giving us crap matches, zero storylines, and no time.

          • wwepassion

Models are to blame as well because whether it’s acting or wrestling they don’t deliver. A small amount do though and fans never connected to any model after the ruthless aggression era until this Kelly,Eve one her last year, and currently Summer.

          • wwepassion

I wouldn’t say Torrie and candice were good so that’s why i didn’t say them. They were barley ok to me.

      • AWESOMENICK

PG Era still has a number of great diva matches under their belt, it’s just they’ve been lazy!

        • wwepassion

          Very lazy.

        • wwepassion

          very lazy.

  • Guest

that backstage segment with AJ and tamina was Hilarious wish it was on TV instead of the App AJ face when she found out nobody was there

  • TeamAJ

The segment with aj and tamina was Classic especially tamina face expression when nobody showed up. nice

  • HC Duran

The problem with WWE creative only writing for the ‘over’ Diva, besides neglecting everybody else, is that if they blow that one storyline they’re working on, they’ve messed up that performer as well. The backstage party bit was crappy, the 2 minute match was crappy (except for Naomi’s moveset), and the entire AJ storyline seems to have been run into the ground.

Couldn’t we have gotten at least one promo from Naomi by now, to build a feud with AJ? Or a new one from AJ, to reinforce her sense of supremacy over the TDs? I fear more at this point not for AJ or Naomi, but for Emma, Paige, and Summer Rae. Is the next generation of Divas going to be subject to these same weak backstage bits and 2 minute drill matches? Who needs to ever graduate from NXT, if they can’t get decent or consistent development on the main roster?

    • I love Melina

YEEEEEEES. THIS EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the divas could do better with the little time given, like look how impressive naomi was compared to the rest.

AJ vs Naomi could be great if WWE gave us some promos/segments/attacks as well, and let us see the characters of the two girls. Hopefully they get a match at rumble, and things get more intense when AJ wins dirty or something like that. I could definitely see Naomi losing it at AJ after that ahahahaha

  • BorisG

Btw I love Tamina’s red hair.

    • BigBoss25

I do too. I believe everyone does lol

  • I love Melina

WWE definitely need to get their shit together with the divas. I love the fact that Naomi got the victory over AJ, but I feel like I barely know her as a character. The short matches on raw and smackdown are just not impressing me enough (although I love main event & superstart most of the time hhehehe). As for this match specifically, I liked Naomi because her athleticism shined once again. Sick dropkick, and that spinning elbow off the top. The hurricanrana would have been better if it wasn’t tamina who took it ( I think lol). AJ and Cameron barely did anything disappointingly, but I love AJ’s mental instability lmaooo and tamina is tooo basic, except the big boot was nice. Soo the match was okay, not good. And the segment was okay as well.

I do hope Naomi and AJ face off at the Rumble, but I hope that it prolongs their feud because I think a feud between these two would really help Naomi as a character. They could work magic in the ring. But WWE need to make this feud personal & intense and give it STORYLINE with PROPER BUILD. If that occurs, along with great matches & Naomi impressing as a character, im all for her winning the title off AJ!!!.Also, I really want to see AJ & Tamina turn on each other, but I don’t think it would excite me as the title feud because Tamina has not impressed me at all lately. But things could change if she does something memorable in the ring and as a character. I like how tension between Tamina and AJ was shown in the backstage segment, and it was pretty funny seeing AJ lose it like that :D

Hopefully WWE books things well with the divas, and tries to build Naomi vs AJ. I mean cant they talk about their past in FCW/NXT, or give us some memorable segments, trash talk, attacks etc. AJ should win dirty at the rumble to build tension between the two, and then maybe Naomi can win the title second time around. Then again im still not too sure about her being champion, so maybe I would have AJ retain.

  • #The Rear-View Montage#

Naomi is doing well with the little she’s being given. She’s showing more personality, she’s getting reactions and people are starting to notice her. Now all she needs to do, is change her entrance theme, get the fringe bk and she’ll be perfect!!

    • Jtiera

      She wore fringe?!?! When?

      • #The Rear-View Montage#

NOH8 Pic and in her music video

        • Jtiera

Oh lol I thought you meant her ring gear.

  • I love Melina

And LMAO the backstage segment. Tension definitely building between AJ and Tamina. We’ll see what happens. What do you guys reakon? I would rather tamina not get a title shot lol or at least not win the title

    • BorisG

I want Tamina to win it. They are either going that way. I think Naomi will lose.

      • I love Melina

I think I would rather naomi win the title but doesn’t look very likely . I don’t think tamina is good enough. If she becomes champ, I hope she proves otherwise

    • TeamAJ

AJ/Tamina feud would be good have tamina turn on AJ then tamina can talk about how if it wasn’t for her AJ would not be champ for that long also how she pretended to be AJ friend/bodyguard wearing her shirts and doing all her dirty work only for that to happen. Plus after the rumble ppv its elimination chamber *hint hint*

      • I love Melina

Tamina;s ppv Is coming HAHAHHAHA A storyline between them would definitely make sense and have potential to be good, considering how she’s been her AJ’s bodyguard for so long. Im just not to sure if Tamina can bring the entertainment in-ring wise. I hope she proves me wrong if she feuds with AJ for the tite

  • BorisG

Guys, it’s obvious they will go with Tamina vs AJ. Naomi is sadly just a filler or part of game between Tamina and AJ. They didn’t pair them for nothing and like every other team, they will disband. Just waiting who will pull the trigger first.

    • Julian

Aj already did i dont think tamina is gonna take that smash aj gave her with the cake very we’ll

  • #The Rear-View Montage#

I think we all need to realise that Aj doesn’t need to feud with Tamina for the belt, although that adds to story, they don’t necessarily need to.

    • Wrestling.fan.from.France

The problem is, if she lose it to Naomi and AJ and Tamina begin a feud, Naomi will overshadow by AJ and Tamina’s feud. Her title reign will basically be filler and will mean nothing. I don’t Naomi’s first title reign should be like this…

    • BorisG

Like I said they didn’t team them for nothing.

  • http://myworld.ebay.com/ferociouscougar 09DHK

Imma need Ms. Sandra to hook Tamina up with some REAL ring gear. Now that I got that out my system, I like that Naomi was able to get somewhat of a rise out of the crowd. If Tamina’s gonna have her annual Elimination Chamber title match, hopefully it’s against Naomi; but I kinda want Naomi to have a long, solid feud with AJ. I just don’t want WWE to ruin this feud before it even starts.

  • J.D.C.D.

Like many others have stated here the WWE haven’t built up the other ladies. I hope this is a slow build up for the others. It is too early for Naomi to get a title reign. To me her character hasn’t been built up and also I don’t remember the DivaDirt member’s name but they said Naomi moves too fast in the ring in these quick matches. I really sat down and looked at the match last night and saw what they were talking about. Naomi was moving SO fast, Borderline out of control to me.

I think AJ will be Diva’s Champion till Wrestlemania. Who else has been built up? Who is a diva that the masses would have any kind of feeling for?

    • MarVelousMARK

      manami toyota is naomi’s fav
i bet she would love it in japan

  • David Wilson

Loved the backstage segment- Tamina was trying to make AJ feel better, but it backfired on her…and AJ just went nuts. If they’re making the decision last minute on whether to have a match at the PPV- I’d rather them wait until the day after in that case, so they get time..

And looks like we’re gonna get a secondary feud between Emma and Summer in a few weeks…should be interesting (so long as they don’t make it a rehash of the things they’ve done at NXT)

  • Mariah_Scarey

Well I still think Aj is great so….. *Flips Weave*
