This Sunday at Vengeance, Divas Champion Beth Phoenix defends her title against Eve Torres. Leading up to the match, we’re going to take a look at other memorable matches at Vengeance and the various October PPV events.

The designated October PPV has changed its name often, from Taboo Tuesday to Cyber Sunday to Bragging Rights and finally to Vengeance. This rewind will look back at when the PPV was called Cyber Sunday.

2006 | This time the fan vote came to more use, as fans voted to determine the match stipulation, rather than what sort of skimpy costume the Divas would wear. Lita faced Mickie James in the finals of a tournament that would earn the winner the vacant Women’s Championship and the fans voted for them to compete in a Lumberjill match, presumably going by the notion “the more, the merrier”:

Before there was Bragging Rights, the late-October pay per view spot once belonged to a pay per view known as Taboo Tuesday, which later became Cyber Sunday. So before the Raw and SmackDown Divas wage war on each other tonight, let’s take a look back at some of those past pay per views:

2004
Fulfill Your Fantasy Battle Royal

In 2004, the Raw brand introduced an interactive concept that allowed WWE viewers to vote for stipulations for each of the matches. Women’s Champion, Trish Stratus defended her title in a battle royal against Molly Holly, Stacy Keibler, Victoria, Jazz, Gail Kim and Nidia. The stipulation, as voted for by the fans, was for the Divas to wear school girl outfits.

2005
Fulfill Your Fantasy Battle Royal

The battle royal returned in 2005 for a second year and once again, Women’s Champion Trish defended her gold. But this time it was against Ashley, Mickie James, Maria, Victoria and Candice Michelle. Talent pool severely down from last year, no? The fans voted for the Divas to compete in lingerie.

2006
Women’s Championship: Lita vs Mickie James

After two years of Taboo Tuesday, it was all change in 2006. The pay per view had now become Cyber Sunday and the Diva who had dominated the previous two years of the PPV, Trish Stratus had retired a month before Cyber Sunday 2006. Her vacated Women’s Championship was put on the line in an 8-Diva tournament which ended at this pay per view. Lita and Mickie James would compete in the finals of the tournament to crown a new Women’s Champion. The fans had voted for this one to be a Divas lumberjack match.

2007
Halloween Costume Contest

Things went downhill in 2007 with the launch of the Halloween Costume Contest as opposed to a real match. The Divas dressed up and the fans voted who they thought looked best… well actually, it usually ended up as a popularity contest.

2008
Halloween Costume Contest

So after the ‘success’ of the 2007 costume contest, it returned in 2008! Mickie won once again. No footage found.

Cyber Sunday saw the return of the Halloween Costume Contest, proving why I least look forward to this pay per view of all the events on the calendar. No Divas matches, but mindless segments which were more like commercials for softcore porn. “You can sail my boat!”, “I’ll take you to heaven!” Suggestive carrots didn’t help matters either. I thought we were aiming for a PG audience now?

Anyway, this month’s column is kind of hard to write so I’m going to add my opinions on costumes seperately. As for the segments and the catfight, it all just seemed a little sloppy and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at all the shenanigans. While I liked some costumes, this doesn’t make up for a lack of match. The catfight at the end was ridiculous and as you can see from the picture above, why on earth was Mickie  holding Candice? It just looked like a silly routine from a bad comedy double-act. Did anyone else notice Mickie fall over at the end of the segment too? I lol’d. Anyway, it was great to see Mickie pick up the win here, I really thought it would be between her and Kelly and I’m glad it was Mickie over Kelly. What does this prove? That Mickie, no matter how much WWE tries to push Candice and Kelly on us, is still the most popular Diva in WWE today and deservedly so.

Now onto the costumes:

The Good
I thought Beth’s costume really suited her as the Glamazon, it looked great and so did she. Brie Bella’s Cleopatra costume was perfect for her, she definitely has the right look to pull it off and did so. Eve’s very original and outside-the-box Ninja Turtle costume was a lot of fun to see, I really liked it – it showed personality. Lena Yada looked mighty fierce in her ninja outfit, this was my favourite outfit of the entire night. Who’d have thought it? Lena Yada winning my vote! Mickie pulled off her Tomb Raider outfit very well also, I’m not sure how it compares to Angelina Jolie, but I thought Mickie had the right look to pull off Lara Croft. And last but not least – Victoria! God, is there anything to really say here other than LMFAO!

Best of the Best: Lena Yada as a ninja.

The Bad
Candice’s Marilyn Monroe costume was just so cliched. And dear God woman, a little warning before you try to sing. Kelly Kelly as a sailor hmm, there was nothing fun or original about this costume. It just looked like Kelly Kelly in a slutty sailor outfit trying to look sexy. Layla’s Princess Leia outfit wasn’t flattering on her, neither were the buns. But I do give Layla points, because she really showed some acting chops in her little segment, I thought it was pretty cool. Maryse’s French maid costume was again, cliched. It actually doesn’t look too different to something she’d wear in the ring either. Natalya’s cop costume was just unoriginal. And Tiffany’s skanky nun was offensive to some apparently and just looked tacky and cheap.

Baddest of the Bad: Kelly Kelly as a sailor

The Ugly
Jillian’s Batgirl just didn’t work for me, it looked odd to say the least. Katie Lea’s vampire hmm… when I heard she was going to be a vampire I thought it could go one of two ways: a cool sleek vampire or an over the top mess. Unfortunately, Katie went for the latter. It’s nice to know she’s not afraid to fug it up but this is a WWE Divas contest, let us not forget. Just like most Maria outfits, the bunny costume was too over-accessorised with fur flying everywhere. But apparently she made it herself, so go figure. The outfit was cliched also, like so original, Maria. Michelle McCool’s army costume was just one big ole tranny hot mess! Everything looked like it had just been thrown together, it didn’t look like a costume you could just purchase at Wal-Mart. The coat didn’t even fit her and the tights were kinda skanky and Michelle is not skanky.

The Tip Sheet
Erin: So last year, Mickie James won the contest even though her costume was about as creative as the ones you can find at Wal-Mart. This tells me that the fans don’t really care who wears what – it’ll be a popularity contest, plain and simple. The question is, then, who is the most popular at the moment? I’m willing to bet on Mickie, even though she’s not really in the spotlight at the moment. I’m sure she’ll come up with something cutesy, but not really worthy of winning. She’ll still win, though. Hopefully the rest will pick up the slack, creativity-wise.
Josie: I tend to believe that if anything is left for the fans to decide (and it’s legit, not WWE rigged), it’s quantity over quality. It doesn’t really matter who or what the best costume is, because ultimately, it’s a popularity contest. If the fans like you and you have a great following, they’ll usually come through for you. You can have a big flop, but the support group will be there. That said, I can’t help but to think Mickie James will pull out another victory. She’s very over with the general WWE universe. If anyone were to pull an upset, though, my money is on Kelly Kelly.
Melanie: I think regardless of the fan vote, Kelly has this one locked down. WWE is pushing her and I think this will be an avenue to do so. The only other Diva I see coming close to her in votes is Mickie James. Those are the two front runners, if you ask me. Mickie still proves to be immensely popular with the fans, but WWE can and does rig the votes for the Cyber Sunday pay per view and I expect this one will fall in Kelly’s favour.

With Cyber Sunday Halloween Costume Contest set to go down this Sunday, I felt inspired to assign costumes to each participating Diva. Although several Divas have already shared what their costume will be, I’ve gone ahead and came up with my own ideas, making sure to avoid the more cliche and skanky costumes. I mean, I don’t know how many times you can see a sexy nurse before losing your mind. Without further adieu, take a look at the costume options below and cast a vote for your favorite! No text messaging fee here, folks

BETH PHOENIX – SHE-HULK

Women’s Champ Beth Phoenix is known for her brute strength and intimidating demeanor, so it’s easy to picture the Glamazon as She-Hulk, lawyer-by-day cousin to the famous Jade Giant. Like She-Hulk, Beth is statuesque and beautiful, and could totally kick some evil-doer ass. She’s also got the sass to match. Just paint Beth green and boom – you’ve got it!

BRIE BELLA – MASQUERADE COUNTESS

Brie Bella, or is it Nicole Bella? Whoever it is, she’s constantly playing switcheroo, ducking under the ring at a moment’s notice to switch places with her twin. With the mysterious thought in mind, Brie could dress as a Masquerade Countess, brandishing a mask as her “disguise” and giving a new meaning to hiding your true identity.

CANDICE MICHELLE – BETTY BOOP

Candice Michelle has always been a bit of a sexpot, even as a babyface. Thus, who would be a better fit for the “innocent yet sexy” icon known as Betty Boop? She has the dark hair that can be styled into the trademark short hairdo, and a form-fitting red dress would easily complete the look. All she needs is a white and furry four-legged friend.

EVE – DOROTHY FROM “THE WIZARD OF OZ”

Eve doesn’t have the most booming WWE career, but she does hold a bit of a resemblance to Judy Garland, no? So why not have her dress up as the famous Dorothy Gale from “The Wizard of Oz”? Just tie her hair into pigtails, put on the gingham dress, and find some ruby red slippers. Maybe even Toto in a basket? Hell, maybe she can click her heels together and wish for screen time! Perhaps the Wizard could lend her a career.

JILLIAN HALL – CABARET SINGER

Jillian Hall, as you are well aware, is an aspiring singer, so of course her costume needs to reflect that. She’s already dressed up as Britney Spears, so that’s out of the question. So what about a more traditional look? Jillian could go all Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret” as dress as a cabaret singer – complete with black vest, shorts, pantyhose, boots, and a bowler hat. A song and dance routine would be required, of course.

KATIE LEA – PIRATE

Remember when Katie Lea‘s brother Paul Burchill was fixated on pirates? He looked like something straight out of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. So wouldn’t it be a funny reference to those days if Katie dressed up as a pirate herself? I’m not talking the slutty “pirate wench” crap – she could mimic Keira Knightley’s more masculine look from “Dead Man’s Chest” with a long waistcost, vest, trousers, a white billowy shirt, cuffed pirate boots, and a floppy hat. Of course, a sword would be required as well. This would be a more “real” pirate look, and even though Elizabeth is hardly a historically accurate depiction of female pirates, it’s a thousand times more plausible than that “wench” crap..

KELLY KELLY – JEANNIE FROM “I DREAM OF JEANNIE”

Kelly Kelly could pull off the blonde genie look flawlessly if she donned the pink getup worn by Jeannie in the classic TV show “I Dream of Jeannie”. And really, the act isn’t tough at all – just fold your arms and blink! Now getting in the bottle? That’s a whole different story.

LAYLA – QUEEN ELIZABETH I

Layla is the Queen to William Regal‘s King, so why not expand on that royal persona and dress up as the most famous Queen of all? Of course, I’m speaking of Queen Elizabeth I. Seeing Layla in the voluminous dress and red wig would be priceless. And hell, at least she wouldn’t have to fake the English accent.

LENA YADA – AGENT 99

Lena Yada often has the sleek, sexy look of a female secret agent, so what better costume to don than one of Agent 99 from the famous “Get Smart TV show? Perhaps she could go for more of a Anne Hathaway-inspired disguise look from the recent movie, wearing a short wig, sexy dress , and a well-place concealed gun to pull out at a moment’s notice.

MARIA – POISON IVY

I think we can all agree that Catwoman is a bit played out. So what other Batman villainess is available? Maria, I think, could pull off a mean Poison Ivy, with her red hair playing a big part. The green getup and dramatic makeup would be easy to put together, and would demonstrate a bit of that fashionable creativity that Maria keeps talking about. Maria’s a big comic book fan too, so I’m sure she’d be all gung-ho about that idea.

MARYSE – HELEN OF TROY

It’s plain to see that Maryse is gorgeous, maybe even comparable to the famous Greek myth of Helen of Troy, known as “the face that launched a thousand ships”, the woman who was the cause of the Trojan War. Her beauty is legendary, and the serene blonde look emulated by Diane Kruger in “Troy” would be a perfect one to mimic. Maryse would just need to find a Grecian gown and she’s set!

MICHELLE MCCOOL – ANN DARROW

As a blonde beauty herself, Michelle McCool could pull off an Ann Darrow look flawlessly. Ann, of course, is the famous female abducted by the giant ape in “King Kong”. The iconic white dress and wavy blonde hair are simple enough to find, but the look isn’t complete without a primate friend.

MICKIE JAMES – RAGGEDY ANN

Mickie James has the quirky, cutesy thing down pat. I don’t think there’s a better costume combo of that than Raggedy Ann, the old school doll friend of Raggedy Andy. The red yarn wig, bonnet, and blue dress would look adorable on her, and she could even paint the red nose and stitches on her face for added cuteness.

NATALYA – XENA, WARRIOR PRINCESS

Natalya is a firecracker, constantly yelling and showing her extreme strength and intimidating physique. The famous female warrior Xena would be a nice fit for Natalya, right down to the trademark warrior yell. A black wig, armor, boots, and a sword would make her ready for business.

TIFFANY – EDIE SEDGWICK

I’ll admit that I don’t know that much about her, but newcomer Tiffany definitely hasa mod look about her. Her blonde tresses remind me of those of Edie Sedgwick, 60s icon and famous muse of artist Andy Warhol. A shorter blonde wig would be needed, of course, as well as a short shift dress and knee-high boots. Heavy, dramatic eye makeup is her trademark, so she’ll need to stock up on the liquid eyeliner and false eyelashes.

VICTORIA – SARAH PALIN

No matter your political affiliation, you can’t deny that Vice Presidental candidate Sarah Palin is a hot topic right now. Victoria, as we all know, always goes for the goofy and out-there costumes. Political costumes are about as goofy as you can get, no? So why shouldn’t Victoria pull a Tiny Fey and copy Sarah Palin’s look, right down to the famous accent? All she would need is a pulled-up hairdo, a pair of glasses, some bright business attire, and a few winks here and there.

Looks as though WWE has shown us it’s card and revealed our “fill” or rather lackthereof in Divas action for Cyber Sunday. For the second year in a row, we’re being subjected to a torturous and highly unertaining Halloween Costume Contest and we have a one third chance of seeing Divas actually wrestling. Great booking(!)

Diva Dirt has come up with it’s own solutions to what WWE could have done for the event if Vince and his merry bands of writers pulled their fingers out of their asses. And in keeping with Cyber Sunday tradition, we’re letting you vote for your favourite – but unlike WWE, no text charge!

1. Pick Michelle McCool’s opponent
Considering Raw got to have a match at No Mercy, Cyber Sunday should have gone to SmackDown. Here, fans could vote for the Diva they wanted to see face Michelle McCool for the Divas Championship.
The Interactive Aspect: The three candidates that fans could vote for could have been Maria, Maryse or Natalya. Or perhaps even Victoria or Brie Bella, there’s lots of combinations to choose from.

2. Pick the stipulation
Had WWE gone with a rematch from No Mercy, they could have had Beth Phoenix and Candice Michelle face off once again at Cyber Sunday, but with the fans voting for the stipulation.
The Interactive Aspect: The choices here could be a street fight, an “I Quit” match or a two-out-of-three falls match.

3. Pick the title
The last solution and my favourite, would be letting fans vote for which brand and title fans want to see defended at Cyber Sunday. The matches would be based upon current storylines: WWE could have gone for Beth vs Candice for Raw or determine a new #1 Contender. SmackDown could have had Michelle vs Maryse or a new contender (see SmackDown spoilers).
The Interactive Aspect: Obviously, the options would be a Women’s Championship match from Raw or a Divas Championship match from SmackDown.
