NWA continued to make history at the 73rd-anniversary show. The event played host to two first-time women’s matches.
The first saw Mickie James make her triumphant return to the ring with a victory over Kylie Rae.
James received a heroes welcome before putting on a good albeit short match with Rae. Both wrestlers put in a good effort that featured counters, reversals and near falls. James picked up her first win in over a year with the Implant DDT around the 5-minute mark.
After the match, a hooded figure burst into the ring and brutally attacked James. A huge pump kick flattened the wrestling legend and the assailant revealed herself to be non-other than Deonna Purrazzo.
Purrazzo continued the attack with a Queen’s Gambit pile driver before gloating in front of a shocked audience. Rae then hit the ring to chase the Knocks Champion off.
In the lead-up to Empowerrr James and Purrazzo went back and forth on IMPACT! Wrestling. The Virtuoso took offence to James’ constant interruptions during her segments as she set up her title defence against Melina.
The attack looks to be setting up a match between the two possibly/hopefully at Bound for Glory pay-per-view in October.
The next match saw Kamille defend the NWA World Women’s Championship against Chelsea Green.
Both wrestlers had momentum behind them coming into the match. Kamille defeated Leyla Hirsch in a great match while Green received the shot at the title when she won the first-ever NWA Women’s Invitational Trophy at Empowerrr.
Kamille was at her dominant best from the start swatting away any offence Green was able to get in. If the champ couldn’t use her strength against the Hot Mess she targetted her injured wrist.
Despite the injury, Green powered through and hit Kamille with everything she had. She landed a succession of clotheslines, a missile dropkick and a cutter but was unable to put the champion away.
Green used the ropes to break a pin when Kamille smashed her with a spear causing the flustered champ to go for the wrist again. Kamille forced the tenacious Green to tap out after synching in a wrist lock to retain the championship in her second excellent outing in as many days.
