Missed Connections: Four Forgotten Wrestling Couples

Chris‘s pick: Maxine and Derrick Bateman

When favorite wrestling couples come to mind, I can’t help but think of Derrick Bateman and Maxine. Their relationship came to bloom on the often forgotten masterpiece that was NXT: Redemption.

When Maxine returned after NXT Season Three, Her and Bateman quickly became NXT’s #1 couple and dominated the show’s content. Not that any of us were complaining! NXT soon became known as “The Maxine Show” among it’s cult following. Maxine & Bateman’s comedy segments were nothing short of legendary, who could forget such moments as Maxine scolding Bateman about spending too much time perming his hair and not enough attention on her or future WWE Hall of Famer, Agnes Bateman, confronting Maxine about her relationship with her son during the infamous love triangle between Maxine, Bateman and Johnny Curtis, which was dubbed by yours truly “Maxine’s Choice”.

It truly was one of the few times that WWE did comedy really well, but at the same time produced an intriguing storyline with a female talent in the center of it. Maxine is one of the most under appreciated Divas of the past five years and played her role to perfection. She was wrestling’s Amanda Woodward (Melrose Place reference courtesy of a very important person) and Bateman, now known as TNA’s ECIII, was the perfect other half to Maxine. Who could forget Bateman interrupting the legendary wedding of Maxine and Dirty Curty, with Maxine and Bateman reuniting via a slap from Maxine, their favorite message of love.

Maxine and Bateman ended after Bateman’s budding friendship with another missed Diva, Kaitlyn. Which fueled Maxine to go into a fit of rage during a chair swinging piece of goodness segment known as “The Friendship Circle”. Although Maxine has now moved onto a successful movie career and Bateman has now become a highlight of TNA’s programming, Whenever I see anything from them I can’t help but hope that one day, somewhere we will see the reunion of one of the most underrated couples of all time, The couple known as Betamax. After all, I was once named their adopted son via Twitter.
