Mr. Glamazon’s Hitting the Ropes: Glam Slam Mailbag #3 + Glam Slam Reader Profile

13

It’s time for the third “Hitting the Ropes” Glam Slam mailbag!  Once again, thanks to all of you who submitted questions!

OK, let’s kick things off…

Reader: Billy James

“Do you think that Mickie James will cement her place in Women’s Wrestling History as one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time plus silence her critics when Mickie wins the TNA Knockout championship and becomes the 1st Triple Crown Women’s champion?  Also when do you see Mickie winning the Knockouts title?”

Mr. G – As a 5-time Women’s Champion as well as a Divas Champion, there is no denying the impact and accomplishments of Mickie James in the WWE.  She was a very valuable piece of the Divas division and was involved in some great storylines (Trish’s stalker, obviously, but I also liked her matches with Beth and her recent work with Lay-Cool).  But I am not sold on Mickie as one of the greatest of all time.  If you are going strictly on number of championships, then that is indisputable.  But in professional wrestling we know championships don’t necessarily equal career success (for example, Jake Roberts never won a WWE title but few people were bigger stars at the time.)  I think Mickie is an above-average wrestler who is just mediocre on the microphone, and I only love her matches when she is paired with a dynamic opponent.  Mickie may win the TNA Knockout’s title in the next few weeks but I still wouldn’t put her in the same category as the true legends of women’s wrestling.  (Sorry Billy…)

NXT Redux (November 9th, 2010): NXT Does Manchester. Rookie Girls All Make Statements In The Process.

author’s note; Apologies for the lateness of this Redux. I was asked to work at 8am yesterday morning and usually I do these things in the morning. But I ended up staying at work until close (8pm) and was just far to tired to function when all was said and done!

Previously on NXT…

The second rookie elimination of the season took place with bad girl Maxine getting the boot. The highly anticipated nuptials of Aksana and Goldust had a few glitches but in the end the couple managed to tie the knot. Too bad Aksana slapped the taste out of her new husband’s mouth when he went to kiss her. Cody Rhodes invaded the show and ended up being the kissee in a most amusing kissing contest. AJ may or may not have hinted towards feelings for her NXT mentor, Primo Colon. Kaitlyn and Dolph Ziggler were finally caught kissing, and Vickie Guerrero ended up with wedding cake all over her face.

Oh boy.

What kind of drama will enfold tonight? Grab a beer, pop some popcorn, and get your ear plugs ready. NXT is about to begin!

When NXT opens, the handsome Matt Striker is standing in the ring. He lifts the microphone to his lips to welcome the remaining four rookie girls to the show but instead, Goldust’s theme music hits and the Bizarre One walks out to the ring. No painted on tears tonight from what I can see. Goldust has the microphone and he calls out Aksana. He says that all week long, his “wife” hasn’t picked up her phone or anything, and he deserves an explanation. Goldust says it’s in Aksana’s best interest that she gets out to the ring right now. Aksana does indeed walk out and she’s got the Million Dollar Championship draped across her shoulder. She mocks Goldust by asking him if his heart is broken or something. She reveals that she used her pro to solve her immigration issues and now she has her green card and can stay in the country. Everything is all about Aksana and now she has the title. Aksana says that when she and Goldust get divorced she will own half of everything he has, including the belt and she plans on cashing in her half. That’s the American way.

I was right about Aksana. Imagine that.

Goldust calls Aksana a conniving little Lithuanian witch. He also says she is clueless and that tonight she’s not in America. She may be able to stay in the U.S.A., but he thinks it’s time to kick her butt right out of Britain. Aksana is not amused. To her surprise, Naomi walks out next. She has a microphone and she says that she doesn’t want Aksana kicked out of the country. When Goldust goes to protest, Naomi explains herself. She says she felt like Aksana was fake the entire time and she never bought the immigration story for one minute. She accuses Aksana of hatching the plan just to become the center of attention. Aksana protests the accusation and claims that she really would have gotten beat with a shovel if she would have had to return home. Naomi just doesn’t care. She says Aksana is fake and phony, and she wants to face her in a match tonight. Aksana looks at Goldust and asks him what she should do since he is her pro and all. Goldust finds that hilarious and tells Aksana to go and get her butt kicked by Naomi tonight.

Looks like we have our main event.

Exclusive: Britani Knight Receives WWE Tryout

13

Diva Dirt has learned that British independent wrestler Britani Knight, who recently featured in our Five to Watch 2010, received a tryout with WWE yesterday in London prior to the Raw brand house show at the O2 Arena.

18-year-old Knight is something of a wrestling prodigy in the UK as both her parents are veterans of the sport. Two of her brothers are also wrestlers. Knight has been wrestling since age 13 and along with her mother, Sweet Saraya, is one of the stars of Pro-Wrestling: EVE, even main-eventing the first ever DVD along with Blue Nikita.

I’m told Britani’s brother, who competes as Zak Zodiac, also took part in a tryout. This perhaps marks the first time that a brother and sister have received a WWE tryout on the same day.

Thoughts: I had no doubt that WWE or TNA would one day be knocking on Britani’s door, so this comes as little surprise. Not only is she incredibly talented but her looks are perfect for TV. Good luck, Britani! To learn more about Britani be sure to check out extensive profile on her, written by Stew Allen, here.

Heat on Sexy Star in Home Promotion Due to WWE Tryout

12

Mexican lucha star, Sexy Star reportedly has heat on her in her home promotion AAA following her decision to try out for WWE earlier this year, according to the Wrestling Observer.

Dave Meltzer writes: “Sexy Star, who has been in the dog house since she went for a WWE tryout, did herself no favors in trying to get work in CMLL. The general belief is if she went to CMLL, they’d bury her because she can’t work up to their standards, plus they have a general rule that if people are AAA stars who never proved themselves first in CMLL, they usually don’t do anything with them.”

Thoughts: Don’t usually cover the lucha news from Mexico, but I’m sure this will be of interest to some of you. I’m not sure how the scene works over there personally, but I have enjoyed the little I’ve seen of Star’s work including her recent tag match with Alissa Flash who is now working for AAA.

NXT Season Finale Will Be On…

5

The season finale of the current (and probably final) season of NXT will be on November 30th meaning there are just three episodes remaining.

One more Rookie Diva will be axed this coming Tuesday, leaving just three to compete in the final two weeks of the competition before a winner is crowned.

Though the season was announced as being 12 weeks long in week one, in actuality, it will end up being 13 weeks.

Savor it, folks!

Raw Redux (November 8th, 2010): From the Geniuses Behind ‘Diva Bowl’, it’s the Divas Cup (with No Actual Cup)

21

Instead of following up on the feud going on between Natalya and Lay-Cool at the moment, WWE opted to go with a six Diva gimmick tag match. Go figure. This week, the team of Eve and The Bella Twins face off against Alicia Fox, Maryse and Tamina. But this is no ordinary battle, oh no! From the geniuses that brought us ‘Diva Bowl’ last year, comes the ‘Divas Cup’… except, there’s no cup in sight? Cheapskates! Check out the match below:

The babyface team makes their entrance first, sporting Manchester United uniforms, to a chorus of jeers from the crowd. I’m told this is because of rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool (which is being represented by the heels). I’m not really a soccer fan, so this was completely wasted on me and the majority of Americans watching at home.

Out next are the heels, and apparently Tamina missed the memo for this match. Doesn’t she know that they’re supposed to be ‘sexy’ soccer players? She looks like she’s an actual soccer player! *shock horror* All jokes aside, I kinda like the fact that Tamina doesn’t try to be as overtly sexy as her counterparts. I think it makes her come across as a more serious competitor. That said, she really stuck out like a sore thumb coming down the ramp with Maryse and Alicia. The Divas take their places in their respective corners, Mike Chioda signals for the bell and the Diva Cup is underway with Eve and Tamina kicking things off.

Mickie James Discusses Why She Joined TNA, Comments on Brawl with Tara at Turning Point

34

It was perhaps the biggest acquisition ever made for the Knockouts division when Mickie James signed with the company a couple of months ago. Speaking for the first time on her official website, Mickie discusses why she joined TNA.

Read below:

I think a lot of people know (TNA President) Dixie Carter attended my CD release party in Nashville in May, so we were talking. I was entertaining the move for a while. I think what made it click was working an independent gig where friends of mine were there. It made me remember why I got in wrestling in the first place. It was my genuine love for wrestling. I think sometimes it becomes a business and you forget the important details. Now I feel like I have a renewed spirit. I remember why I got into the business and it’s that love. I know that Dixie is behind me 100% with the music too. We’re going to try to work both of the schedules together. One hand feeds the other. She gets that. She wants me to be successful and to pursue music or acting if I so choose. She knows I’m representing TNA with everything that I do. That’s not a liberty that you often have in any business. I think that’s a really cool thing. It gives everybody power over their own destiny. It allows you to go after your dreams and do what you want to do. You’re still an individual.

James also discussed her big match/brawl with Tara this past Sunday:

Serena Comments on Living the Straight Edge Gimmick Outside of the Ring in WWE

7

Former WWE Diva, Serena was the special guest on Right After Wrestling last night with Arda Ocal. The ex-Straight Edge Diva commented on living the Straight Edge Society gimmick outside of the ring during her time in WWE.

One of the reasons that Serena was supposedly released is because she didn’t play up the gimmick in public when amongst fans.

Quotes below:

“They were big on that (living a straight edge lifestyle outside the ring) and understandably so. It was a really hot angle and an important stable in the company so they definitely wanted that image to be maintained outside of the ring as well. It was more or less implied, never really said. It was just one of those implications.”

“WWE as a company is such a global phenomenon and there is so much media attention surrounding the company. We all know the media is always looking for ways to bash pro wrestling. I think it’s one of those things that they want the employees to maintain a professional image in the public because it’s such a huge company, it’s the messiah of pro wrestling.”

Lay-Cool vs Natalya Confirmed For Survivor Series

Just announced tonight on Raw: The third generation Diva, Natalya will be facing off against not one, but both members of Lay-Cool at Survivor Series. Natalya has come up short on two occasions due to Lay-Cool’s antics in the past. How will she fare when both of the flawless ones are legal participants in the match? Can Natalya overcome the odds and finally bring home the Divas Championship?

Thoughts: This seems like the perfect opportunity for Natalya to recruit someone to have her back. Hmmmm… I hear a certain Glamazon is healing up pretty nicely…

TNA Impact Spoilers: November 11th, 2010

Spoilers for Impact this Thursday below:

Spoiler
* Jay Lethal & Taylor Wilde vs. Robbie E & Cookie. At one point things broke down and Taylor was chasing Cookie around the ring. This distracted Lethal and allowed Robbie E to hit his finisher and win the match.

Re-tape: Jay Lethal & Taylor Wilde vs. Robbie E & Cookie. They called it a rematch. I call it a re-tape. This time around, Cookie’s boot came off before she ran around the ring with Taylor in chase. Robbie used the boot to knock Lethal out and get the pin. I’m told the match was even worse the second time.

Xplosion
Tara vs. Velvet Sky. Winner via Widow’s Peak, Tara.

TNA Turning Point in Review: Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, I Wanna Start a Fight!

Billed as a match that had it’s roots in the company they both formerly worked for, last night saw a grudge match between Tara and Mickie James.. At first, it felt like Mickie would simply have to go through Tara to get a shot at the Knockouts Championship, but this feud has taken on a life of it’s own. Each woman is eager to get their hands on the other. So who would come out victorious?

Prior to the match, backstage we see Christy Hemme with Mickie James. It’s a short promo but MJ gets straight to the point. She admits there might’ve been mutual dislike between the two in the WWE, but no matter what, she says that Tara “will respect me.” There’s a gleam in her eyes as she glares at the camera before stalking off.

JB announces Tara being accompanied to the ring by Madison Rayne, but as Tara rides out on her bike, she’s going solo. (JB must’ve had a tad bit of the hair o’ the dog…) She’s sporting boots, fishnets, and a ripped t-shirt and frankly I’m hard pressed to make sense out of this outfit. It looks trashy to be honest. However, I adore the red streaks in her hair so I’ll overlook the outfit. Next out is Mickie James and I vastly prefer her new gear over the cut off shorts and tied shirt. Her outfit tonight is a blue top like she used to wear in the WWE, plus pants that have cowboy chaps on them. She should’ve taken the chaps off, but on the whole it’s a big improvement.

Raw Spoilers for Tonight

WWE is taping tonight’s Raw in Manchester, England tonight thus the show will air via tape delay. Spoilers below:

The Women of Tough Enough: Where Are They Now? (Part 2)

17

Lee Burton returns with the second part of his look at the women of Tough Enough, this time focusing on the best of the rest. Click here to read part one.

In the original part of this look back of The Women of Tough Enough, we checked out the three winners – Nidia Guenard, Linda Miles and Jackie Gayda Haas. In this concluding part, we should take a peek at some of the other contestants who ended up in the biz, as well as the applicants who didn’t make it into the house but still forged a career in wrestling anyway.

So let’s go through it season by season…

Tough Enough 1
As mentioned in the previous article, Nidia won the original season after being picked over her only other real competition, Taylor Matheny (now 30). At the finale, Taylor promised that she wouldn’t quit her dream of making it as a wrestler, and stuck to her promise… at first.

Taylor was a salty character on Tough Enough. Participating in the show at the disapproval of her parents and being very focused on the prize at the end, she pushed herself in the ring and was dedicated to learning the craft. However, things went south when the remaining contestants went on the road with Al Snow, as she got utterly hammered in a bar and was very delicate the next day. If anything, this might have been an indicator to the WWF that she had pangs of irresponsibility and had some growing up to do. If anything, Taylor wanted it TOO much.

Nobody could doubt her desire though – as evidenced on the final live episode where she looked utterly crushed when Nidia was announced as the victor.

After TE1 ended, Matheny wrestled dates in the US, Canada and Japan (most notably with the celebrated ARSION promotion), defeating the likes of Cheerleader Melissa along the way, and tangling with the likes of SHIMMER co-founder Allison Danger, earning her a 3rd runner-up spot in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Rookie of the Year rankings. The problem was that by the time she had earned that honour, Taylor was starting to wind down as a wrestler.

In 2004, Matheny quit wrestling to take up a course studying Hollywood make-up, though she did appear in the Florida promotion Full Impact Pro in a special guest appearance with her then-boyfriend, now-husband. His name: Brian Kendrick.

Yes, THE Brian Kendrick – the one who held the WWE Tag Team Championship for a year and currently plies his craft in TNA. Even after removing herself from wrestling, Taylor’s still associated with it, thanks to her marijuana-loving beau.
