SummerSlam starts off with the women involved in a match up as the first match on the Kickoff show is the Mixed Tag Team match. This match saw Lana and her husband Rusev face off against Zelina Vega and her client Andrade “Cien” Almas. This match came about from recent weeks of matches between Rusev against Almas and more recently Lana against Vega. Rusev and Lana have been coming up on the losing end of their respective matches. These losses have been due to the fact that Aiden English has been accidentally distracting his friends and causing them to succumb to their opponents. English is told to not come out to the ring tonight by Rusev.
The majority of the match from the beginning was focused on the men, however the women were the deciding factor of the pinfall.
Some key points to the match involve the momentum that Lana has been showing. She has not been picking up wins, but she has been quick and athletic in the ring. Lana executes a neck breaker on Vega, but is only able to get a 2 count as she went for the pin. Vega wisely rolls out of the ring. Lana stays on the heels of her opponent and slams Vega’s face into the ring apron. Lana gets Vega back into the ring and stays on the offense and lifts her opponent up and slams her to the mat. She is able to get another near fall, but it isn’t enough to put Vega away.
Vega is able to throw Lana face first into the turnbuckle. As Lana gets back to her feet and is able to focus on her opponent, Almas distracts Lana twice from jumping up on the ring apron. The second time he gets on the apron, Lana is able to slap him. That was just enough for Vega to roll up Lana and use the ropes as leverage. Vega wins the match for her team.
