Shayna Baszler retains NXT Women’s Championship

NXT TakeOver XXV celebrates their 25th installment this evening from Bridgeport, Conn. The women’s involvement during this celebratory event was an NXT Women’s Championship match. Shayna Baszler defended her title against Io Shirai.

This was Shirai’s first title opportunity against the submission magician since her best friend Kairi Sane left NXT to join the SmackDown brand. Fortunately for Shirai, Candice LeRae spoke to her prior to the match. She instilled a sense of security in Shirai that she had her back. During the match, LeRae proved that her words were true.

When Shirai had the upper hand during the match, Baszler’s buddies Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke made their way to the ring. LeRae wasn’t about to allow these two to interfere in this match to the champion’s favor. Kendo stick in hand, she took out the Queen of Spades best friends eliminating them from the equation.

Although Shirai had help in maintaining the integrity to the match, she still succumbed to Baszler’s Kirifuda clutch. This submission hold has destroyed many prior competitors hopes of becoming champion. What may have been a surprise to many was what transpired after the match.

Shirai seemingly tired of Baszler and her tactics had enough. She took out the champion after the match. With a combination of the kendo stick attacks and a steel chair, Shirai left Baszler wincing in pain. The instant welts on the back of the champion show that this feud is far from over. The crowd chanted “you deserve it” towards Baszler as Shirai made her way to the back.
