Sonya Deville joins the cast of Total Divas

Sonya Deville will be the newest cast member of E! Network’s Total Divas. Deville, whose real name is Daria Berenato, will be featured in the upcoming ninth season of the reality show. She made the announcement last night when she called into Afterbuzz TV’s SmackDown After Show.

She had this to say about joining the cast, “Part of being a WWE Superstar to me is showing the fans what happens outside of the ring, who I am in the ring, and in my personal life, is important to defining my character. I’m tough for a reason. I’ve been through things and I am the person I am for a lot of reasons.”

What makes this cast addition special is that Sonya Deville is the first openly lesbian superstar WWE has had on their roster. It is so important, especially for young kids who are fans of the show, to have insight on the LGBT community. Deville actually came out as a lesbian while filming Tough Enough season 6.

Deville said her girlfriend will be on the show and she is a bit nervous to see how she will handle the cameras. “My girlfriend will be on this season with me, and so that’s a big thing for her because she’s not in the public eye like I am. She’s not used to cameras in her face. It’s going to be an adjustment for her as well, and our relationship.”

This is the second cast change announcement for Total Divas this week, as Lana will not be returning to the show. She claimed in an interview with Lillian Garcia that WWE executives told her and her husband Rusev that E! focus groups found they were heavily disliked by viewers and would be replaced as a result.
