Two Canadian women’s wrestling landmarks set for The Summit

This Saturday at The Summit, a coproduction between RISE, SHIMMER, Femmes Fatales and Smash Wrestling, two Canadian promotions will crown their top female competitors. One championship boasts a nine year legacy, while the other is just beginning its story. Both will provide a showcase for just how dynamic women’s wrestling has come to be.

The Femmes Fatales International Championship might see its 12th champion when Mercedes Martinez defends the belt against Jordynne Grace. Martinez, who has logged a staggering 890+ days as champion across three reigns, is without a doubt the most dominant force Femmes Fatales has ever seen. With a combined 29 title reigns over the course of her career, you could amend that to “the most dominant force the entire women’s wrestling scene has ever seen” and receive few arguments to the contrary.

Though Jordynne doesn’t quite have the numbers to match Mercedes, she’s well on pace: since making her wrestling debut in 2015, she’s won seven titles and is the reigning PROGRESS Women’s Champion. Add to her skill, strength and accomplishments a reason to prove herself – she’s 0-2 against Martinez – and she might be poised to become the next Femmes Fatales International Champion, following in the footsteps of other wrestling mold breakers like LuFisto, Rosemary and Vanessa Kraven.

Many can say they’ve been a champion, but few can say they’re the first. One woman will get that chance when the very first Smash Women’s Champion is named. Rosemary will vie with KC Spinelli for the honor, bringing with them years of history. Their chemistry is obvious, whether it’s when they’re teaming up as The Danger Zone (and holding the APW Tag Team Titles, competing exclusively against men’s duos) or, more recently, squaring off for GFW and IMPACT.

Perhaps even more obvious is why these two have been chosen to make history for Smash: both are proud Canadians, have wrestled for over a decade and have competed extensively for Smash. They also have title histories most would kill for, with 18 championships and countless hard-earned victories between them.

Add to that the fact that a special guest referee will be overseeing the match: Xandra Bale. Xandra has extensive history with both competitors, most notably teaming with KC as the tag team BaleSpin. Though it’s been years since BaleSpin graced the ring together, there still may be some goodwill left over on Xandra’s part. Where will her allegiances fall this Saturday?
