WOW – Women of Wrestling releases first preview

AXS TV’s new series WOW – Women of Wrestling from Los Angeles Lakers owner, Jeanie Buss, and GLOW founder, David McLane, will premiere Friday, Jan. 18 at 9 p.m. EST. This week, AXS TV released the following first look.

WOW first launched back in 2000 and relaunched in 2012 after a nearly 12-year hiatus. The promotion is coming to Mark Cuban’s AXS TV this year, with the debut of third-generation wrestling superstar and current TNA Knockouts Champion, Tessa Blanchard. The first episode will include four matches: The Beast versus Stephy Slays, Abilene Maverick versus Fire, Khloe Hurtz versus Eye Candy, and headliner Jungle Grrrl vs. Santana Garrett for the WOW Championship.

The series premiere looks to create a satisfying return for long-time fans, and an introduction to new audiences. The promotion uses a format of character-driven performers, with names mimicking comic book heroes. Current NXT superstar Candice LeRae, Santana Garrett, and Lucha Underground’s The Beautiful Brenda are just a few notable WOW Superheroes alumni.

WOW debuted in digital format in 2015. Season 2 premiered March 1, 2016, on the WOW YouTube channel, where the third season is also available. In April of 2017, Mark Burnett, Chairman of MGM Worldwide Television, and Jeanie Buss, owner of both WOW and the Lakers, partnered to develop new episodes for the digital format. Last summer, Women of Wrestling’s new home, AXS TV, contracted with them to broadcast live events.

AXS TV’s new Friday Night Fights lineup will start with: New Japan Pro Wrestling at 8 p.m. EST, followed by the debut of WOW – Women of Wrestling at 9 p.m., and then Legacy Fighting Alliance’s first LIVE event of 2019, LFA 57 at its new time, 10 p.m.
