AEW President Tony Khan reveals the idea behind the women’s title tournament

The AEW Women’s World Championship Eliminator Tournament is at the forefront of the promotion’s women’s division. Featuring tremendous talent from all over the world it has produced excellent matches and showcased several superb Japanese talents to a wider audience.

During a recent interview with Bleacher Report, AEW President Tony Khan revealed that Hikaru Shida and Kenny Omega came up with the idea of the women’s title tournament.

“This was one of those ideas where everything really lined up, and it was not my idea. The people who brought the idea to me were Hikaru Shida and Kenny Omega. I thought it was a great idea, and I wanted to do it. They suggested it, and I sat down with Kenny. We spent several days putting together this bracket, and he had a bunch of great ideas. A lot of it came from him, and I stepped in and moved a couple of pieces around and said, ‘I think this person would be good here, and this person would be good there.’ But the idea was Kenny and Shida coming to me, and I was really excited to work on it.”

The tournament kicked off in February and played out throughout the month on both AEW Dynamite and special YouTube shows.

Shida did not only suggest the idea but she produced the matches for the Japanese Bracket. While in Japan Shida also appeared for Emi Sakura’s Chocco Pro as a special guest referee.

Ryo Mizumani won the Japanese finals earlier this week and will face the winner of Thunder Rosa and Nyla Rose. The winner of that match will go on to face Shida at AEW Revolution on March 7th.
