Black History Month Spotlight: Cameron

Throughout the month of February, Diva Dirt will spotlight one Black women’s wrestler a day. This won’t be a countdown, but just a way to shine light on the past and present Black women of the industry. With that said, these daily articles will not be in any particular order.

Representation matters to marginalized groups, and here at Diva Dirt we focus on giving those individuals the recognition they deserve.

For Feb. 7 we are going to recognize Cameron.

We can’t recognize Black History in WWE without Cameron. Between herself and Naomi, they were truly unique as a Black women’s tag team known as The Funkadactyls. In 2011, Cameron appeared on the Tough Enough revival. There, she stood up for Diva fans and considered a match between Alicia Fox and Melina as her favorite despite what critics say.

Despite being eliminated from Tough Enough early on, Cameron was signed to WWE. She trained in FCW and in January 2012, Cameron debuted on Raw with Naomi as The Funkadactyls. Their popularity would only grow overtime as they became original cast members on Total Divas.

Cameron never quite reached main-event status during her WWE career, but she consistently showed heart and served as strong representation in the ring. After her on-screen split from Naomi, she embarked on a brief singles run before ultimately being released by the company. In 2014, she challenged AJ Lee in a feud over the Divas Championship, and later returned to NXT to further develop her in-ring skills.

Cameron’s departure from the company did occur just before the women’s revolution in 2016 and the eventual emergence of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles a few years later.
