Black History Month Spotlight: Michin

Throughout the month of February, Diva Dirt will spotlight one Black women’s wrestler a day. This won’t be a countdown, but just a way to shine light on the past and present Black women of the industry. With that said, these daily articles will not be in any particular order.

Representation matters to marginalized groups, and here at Diva Dirt we focus on giving those individuals the recognition they deserve.

For Feb. 11, we honor Michin.

Michin, or Mia Yim, is not the first on this list to represent not only the Black community, but being Korean she is represented in multiple ways. She has citied Aja Kong and Gail Kim as inspirations.

Inspirations behind her characters such Michin, HBIC, and the Blasian Baddie are all references to her cultures.

A veteran in the industry, Michin made her wrestling debut in 2009 at just 20 years old, after training since she was 18. Being in the ring for the last 17 years, the Blasian Baddie has worked for many promotions. She had found decorated success on both the indies, primarily in SHINE, and in TNA. In SHINE she had held the SHINE Championship and the SHINE Tag Team Championship with Leva Bates. While in TNA, and under the name of Jade, she became Knockouts Champion by defeating Gail Kim with some help by Maria. She was also a member of The Dollhouse with Taryn Terrell and Marti Belle.

In WWE, Michin currently resides on the SmackDown brand. She was in the finals to determine the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Championship, which was won by Chelsea Green. Michin has had a long rivalry with Green before turning her sights to Jade Cargill.

Michin hasn’t reached the top of the mountain in WWE, but she has all the tools to do so.
