Black History Month Spotlight: Nyla Rose

Throughout the month of February, Diva Dirt will spotlight one Black women’s wrestler a day. This won’t be a countdown, but just a way to shine light on the past and present Black women of the industry. With that said, these daily articles will not be in any particular order.

Representation matters to marginalized groups, and here at Diva Dirt we focus on giving those individuals the recognition they deserve.

For Feb. 1 we have Nyla Rose.

Nyla Rose has been a trailblazer for intersectionality as she is a Black and Native American Trans woman.

Although not currently active as much in the ring, Rose is signed to AEW and is the second-ever AEW Women’s World Champion. With this, she has become the first-ever Trans woman to be signed to a major U.S. wrestling promotion and to win a major world title. She has shattered ceilings related to both gender identity and racial representation in professional wrestling and has proven that one can be multifaceted.

In an interview with SI in 2022, Rose spoke on the responses she has received.

“Black families have said they see me as someone who is so strong. As a Native person, I’ve heard from families that tell me it makes them so proud of their heritage, that they’ve broken down in joy when they see themselves reflected in the Iroquois flag. The LGBTQ community has such a prominent figure [in Nyla Rose], and I understand the importance of that. We’re not made to be a punchline; we are not here to be a joke.

Although she’s had a few matches on the indies recently, including a brief run as EVE Women’s Champion, she hasn’t had a televised match in AEW since 2024.
