WWE, what are you doing?
We are just two week’s away from SummerSlam, the biggest event of the summer. So big that it is now a two-night event, which started last year. That sounds great on paper right? More time for the women, RIGHT? Well..
The July 20 episode of Raw was a big bust for the women of the brand. Zero matches. So much so, that they had to incorporate the women that will be on the SummerSlam card (Liv Morgan vs. IYO SKY) with the men’s product. Outside of seeing Morgan and SKY, which I guess as women’s wrestling fans we should be “lucky” they were on it at all, the only other women were Maxxine Dupri with the Vision and an interview that aired during commercial break for most between Sol Ruca and Lyra Valkyria.
Morgan was at ringside during Dominik Mysterio’s match against Joe Hendry. Danhausen, who has been cursing the Judgement Day for a while now, made his way out on his ride. He had SKY on the back of the Hausenmobile to neutralize Morgan.
The two women brawl outside the ring, including the cameraman who ran into Morgan. SKY lands an uppercut to the champion before getting her in the ring. SKY hits a dropkick from the top rope before landing a crossbody to Morgan on the outside. Danhausen hits the Triple D on Mysterio for Hendry to get the win.
As mentioned earlier, there was an interview with the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion, Sol Ruca. For some reason, Ruca will be defending the IC Title next week against Raquel Rodriguez, again. This is no shade to Rodriguez, at all…but we just saw this. Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez had a small interview where it was announced that Rodriguez is getting a title shot….again.
Lyra Valkyria appeared during Ruca’s interview stating that she has dropped some dead weight on Saturday when she ran Bayley out of here. She goes on to compliment Ruca for doing such a good job at being champion, the championship that Valkyria says she created. She wants the title back.
There you have it, the women that took part in the Raw two weeks before SummerSlam. SummerSlam only has two women’s matches confirmed on a two-night event so far. Two. And if there is any indication of what took place on this week’s Raw, we aren’t going to be witnessing many more.
Where were the tag team champions? They don’t have to just be on SmackDown. A newly won team should be showing up first thing on Raw to gloat. Paige and Brie are said to be non-brand specific, where were they? How about the countless other names that never get used? Move Jordynne Grace to Raw, have her team up with Ivy Nile….do SOMETHING.
WWE is not making it easy for women’s wrestling fans in particular to enjoy the product lately, and what we are getting overall with the men hasn’t been must see either.
