Backlash Discussion Post: 05.06.23

Welcome to the Backlash Discussion Post where you can talk live throughout the show. There’s two women’s matches on the card – SmackDown Women’s TitleRhea Ripley (c) vs. Zelina Vega Raw Women’s Title Bianca Belair (c) vs. IYO SKY For Diva Dirt’s predictions you can click here. Enjoy.

Rhea Ripley vs. Zelina Vega Set For Backlash

The SmackDown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley is set to have her first championship defense since her big win at WrestleMania. She will be defending against Zelina Vega at Backlash on May 6.

On the April 21 episode of SmackDown, Vega approached Adam Pearce and gave a pretty flawless reason as to why she should challenge Ripley. Besides the obvious feud between the LWO and Judgment Day, Vega being the only Puerto Rican female on the roster it would only make sense for her to face Ripley in Puerto Rico.

Pearce said he would check with upper management and Ripley herself and the match was made official later in the show.

As for another title, the Women’s Tag Team Titles were defended on this week’s SmackDown. Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez would successfully retain in their first title defense. They faced Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville. The final moments of the match had Morgan get revenge on Green by throwing water in her face. Morgan hit a sunset flip with leverage from Rodriguez to get the pin.

Green and Deville were furious after the match which most likely means the feud between these two teams isn’t over.

Asuka Wins Elimination Chamber, Set To Face Bianca Belair At WrestleMania

At the 2023 Elimination Chamber event, Asuka would enter the chamber last and outlast five other women to punch her ticket to WrestleMania.

The match started with Liv Morgan and Natalya and lasted nearly 20 minutes. Big spots in the match included Nikki Cross delivering a cross body off the top of Carmella’s pod. Morgan hit a sunset flip from the top of a pod to Raquel Rodriguez. And there was also a moment where Rodriguez drove Cross in through a pod that Carmella was trying to keep herself in.

The first elimination was by Rodriguez to Cross. The second and surprising elimination was Morgan, but she didn’t go out easy. She would end up passing out in both the Sharpshooter by Natalya and a combo submission from Asuka. Carmella would eliminate Natalya about 17 minutes into the match by pinfall. Rodriguez was eliminated by Carmella and Asuka leaving us with the final two.

Carmella immediately hit a superkick on Asuka trying to get the surprise victory, but Asuka was able to kick out. Finally, Asuka got Carmella into submission which cause the Princess of Staten Island to tap out.

Asuka will be facing Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania making the second women’s match confirmed for the two-night event. Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley will do battle for the SmackDown Women’s Title.

Speaking of Ripley, the Royal Rumble winner, had a huge match at this event alongside Finn Balor. They faced the team of Beth Phoenix and Edge. A longtime coming match between the Grit Couple and the Judgment Day.

In one of the best mixed tag team matches in years, the four competitors put on one heck of a match. Lastly nearly 14 minutes, it would be Phoenix and Edge to pick up the big win in Canada. Edge would pin Balor.

Great event overall!
