Five SummerSlam matches that are a must-see

SummerSlam is enriched in history and is one of the “big four” pay-per-views of the year. Much like WrestleMania, WWE attempts to pull out big matches and appearances in order to make the event memorable.

This year we currently have three women’s matches on the card which is more than most pay-per-views receive.

This event has been a part of WWE since 1988. A show that has been ongoing for over 30 years should have plenty of women’s matches, right? Not exactly. Where women have been more of a focal point for the past several years, there was a time where women weren’t even on the card.

Some interesting facts for women’s matches on SummerSlam are as follows:

  • The first women’s match on SummerSlam did not occur until 1994, seven years after the first event. It was Alundra Blayze (c) vs. Bull Nakano for the WWF Women’s Championship. Blayze retained.
  • The WWF Women’s Championship was only defended three times in the history of the title and the SummerSlam event.
  • There were six years from 2001 through 2006 that there were no women’s matches at SummerSlam.
  • The first year that there were two women’s matches (not including intergender) was 2014. These matches were Paige vs. Aj Lee as well as Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon,
  • This year marks the first time there will be more than two women’s matches. There are currently three that have been announced at the time of this writing.
