NXT Women’s Championship reportedly losing gender-specific designation

It is being reported by PWInsider that the NXT Women’s Championship will simply be known moving forward as the NXT Championship. This was said to be an internal decree by WWE that was submitted to remove the gender specific designation.

This could be the effort to stop differentiating between men’s and women’s wrestling and refer to it as simply wrestling. RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch shared this exact sentiment this week on WWE Backstage. She was mainly discussing how the designation of “women’s match” or “women’s segment” should be removed. It should just be “match” or “segment.”

This week’s NXT started this move forward with Mauro Ranallo attempting to call Rhea Ripley’s title as simply the NXT Championship.

WWE hasn’t changed the named of the championship on their official website at the time of this writing. There is a WWE Exclusive interview displayed on YouTube that references the title as simply the NXT Championship in its video headline and description. The video sees Toni Storm being interviewed about her upcoming match at Worlds Collide. She still referred to the title as a women’s championship.

There is no word at this time if this will roll over to other championships on the RAW, SmackDown, or NXT UK brands just yet.
