Will WWE’s new Executive Directors benefit the women?

Only time will tell how WWE’s new Executive Directors for RAW and SmackDown will benefit the women’s locker room. It was announced today by WWE that Paul Heyman will be the Executive Director of RAW. Eric Bischoff will take on the same role for SmackDown.

WWE.com reported their roles to include the following:

“In their executive roles, Heyman and Bischoff will oversee the creative development of WWE’s flagship programming and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business. The creation of these roles further establishes WWE’s ability to continuously reinvent its global brand while providing two distinct creative processes for its flagship shows.”

These newly created positions will still have to report directly to the Chairman and CEO, Vince McMahon. Both Heyman and Bischoff have served as Presidents themselves in the past to both ECW & WCW respectively.

So how may all of this affect the women’s rosters?

Heyman has been known to create an impact in the careers of many women in wrestling history. More predominantly women such as Renee Young, Beth Phoenix, and Natalya have cited him as an influencer in their careers. All three spoke highly of him on his “My Name is Paul Heyman” DVD.

ECW & WCW weren’t exactly known for their women’s wrestling. Although this may have been the case, these two men have worked in other promotions that highlighted women’s matches.

In May, an article by 411Mania transcribed 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff where he focused on why women in WCW never went anywhere. Bischoff had the following to say:

“Well, there just wasn’t as many credible, athletic, believable women in 1997 as there are today,” Bischoff said. “It wasn’t like there were women all over the United States, or all over the world, training to become professional wrestlers, number one. There was no Performance Center, not too many women were interested in coming down to the Power Plant to train, to become professional wrestlers. You couldn’t really put an ad in the paper and expect to have much luck. So there just wasn’t the talent pool in 1997 of women wrestlers as there are today. It wasn’t until recently — we’re talking about 2019.

It has further been announced by PWInsider that Heyman has been talked to about this role since February. Bischoff’s involvement has been more recent within the past few weeks.

What are your thoughts on this new development? Do you think that Heyman and/or Bischoff will benefit women’s wrestling in WWE? Discuss your thoughts in the comment section!!

Kacy Catanzaro gets emotional over Ricochet’s title win

NXT Superstar Kacy Catanzaro watched Stomping Grounds this past weekend and paid close attention to Ricochet’s United States Championship match. This was his first singles title match since being called up to the main roster. He faced the current champion, Samoa Joe.

Catanzaro and Ricochet are a real-life couple so she watches with anticipation as he attempts to gain his first title since being called up from NXT. She is joined by fellow NXT talent Chelsea Green and Deonna Purrazzo while watching.

Nervous throughout the video she comments on him doing springboards and how she always hopes he lands them. This is something she is always concerned for herself as well when she executes them.

Ricochet does capture his first title much to Catanzaro’s delight.

What do you think of this reaction video? Do you think that Catanzaro could become a future Women’s Champion? Discuss your thoughts in the comment section below!

Stephanie McMahon makes a brief comment on AEW

Stephanie McMahon was asked by WrestlingNews.co as she was at an airport about AEW. She was asked about what her thoughts on that promotion is and if it is good for professional wrestling. Her response prior to walking off was as follows:

“You know, I think it’s going to force everybody to be the best that they can.”

Other questions involved if she will have any involvement in the XFL, what is a favorite vintage t-shirt of hers, the WWE case study at Harvard Business School, and Ronda Rousey’s status. As far as her involvement of XFL she states she is not a part of it at this time.

When asked about Ronda Rousey and her future with WWE, McMahon said the following:

“You’d have to ask her.”

Nikki Bella provides further health-related updates

In March during the season finale of Total Bellas in March, Nikki Bella announced her retirement from the ring. At the time she referenced her prior neck injury and compared it very similar to the same injury Paige has and why she had to retire as well. On Jimmy Fallon this week she went into a little more detail.

“For me, I really wanted to go back and fight for the tag titles and you know I have always had my neck issues after my neck surgery it hasn’t been okay. So I feel like I needed to get a checkup before we went back for the tag titles. And it came back that I herniated the disc above where I had the surgery, I have all this inflammation around the metal, and I have a cyst on my brain. So they were like you’re done. No more.”

Although it was assumed, Nikki and Brie officially confirmed that there will be a season five of Total Bellas coming. Prior rumors have also stated that the twins along with Paige will not be returning to Total Divas however nothing has been officially announced. Ronda Rousey, Charly Caruso, and Sonya Deville have all been rumored to be joining the cast. Caruso did confirm this on her Twitter account. The official cast has not been announced for the ninth season at this time.

What do you think of this unfortunate update provided by Nikki? Would you have liked to see the Bella Twins become the Women’s Tag Team Champions? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Cardi B could have a match with Carmella at SummerSlam

As addressed earlier by WrestleTalk we could have a Grammy Award winner in the squared circle by SummerSlam. Cardi B recently tweeted out her history of loving wrestling. She gave a huge nod to Eddie Guerrero and many other past superstars including Lita. This tweet caught many people’s eyes including fans, wrestlers, and WWE themselves.

Big events such as Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and SummerSlam are no strangers to celebrities being involved in matches. We previously witnessed such celebs as Maria Menounos, Snooki, Drew Carey, and Shaquille O’Neal just to name a few.

Cardi B’s response to fans about being a previous fan of wrestling caught the eye of Carmella. Carmella tweeted to Cardi about wearing ring gear that was an homage to one of her album covers. This gear was worn last week on SmackDown.

From this, WWE has picked up that ball and ran with it. In a WWE Now update serves a tease to a Cardi B and Carmella tag team for SummerSlam.

What do you think of Cardi B stepping into a wrestling ring? If she were to team with Carmella who would you like to see them face? Maybe SummerSlam could be IICONIC? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section!!

Monster’s Ball match set for Knockouts title at Slammiversary

It’s been revealed that Taya Valkyrie is set to defend her Impact Knockouts Championship at Slammiversary XVII on July 7. This defense will take place in a four-way Monster’s Ball match. It will also involve Rosemary, Su Yung, and the returning Havok.

Recently Havok returned to IMPACT Wrestling and has aligned herself with Yung and Father James Mitchell. The numbers game in this match may be in her favor. Upon her return, she attacked both Valkyrie and Rosemary.

This will be the first time a four-way match involving women will occur in a Monster’s Ball match. The only other women to ever perform in this style match-up is Taylor Wilde, Daffney, and Jade. Rosemary is the only woman going into this match with experience as she defeated Jade in 2017.

A Monster’s Ball match is essentially a no disqualification, hardcore street fight where the fall of the match has to take place inside the ring. During its inception and up until the sixth one in 2007 the preface of this bout was that its competitors were concealed alone in a locked room. There they would be without light, food, or water for 24 hours. This rule has been a distant memory.

All four participants are no stranger to hardcore stipulations so this match should not be on to miss.

Who do you think will walk out of Slammiversary XVII as Knockouts Champion? Will Taya Valkyrie be able to retain under these conditions? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section!!

Michelle McCool vs. Natalya first Diva’s title match 07/20/08

Michelle McCool and Natalya battled it out at the Great American Bash pay-per-view in July 2008. This match was to crown the first ever Diva’s Champion. This match was a crucial moment in history for the women on SmackDown. For nearly six years the women of the blue brand didn’t have a championship to fight for. The Women’s Championship at the time was exclusive to RAW.

McCool was able to become the first ever Diva’s Champion by causing Natalya to submit by using the Brazilian Heel Hook. McCool went on to hold this title for 159-days before losing it to Maryse on SmackDown later that year.

Summer Rae comments on Sasha Banks’ WWE status

Former WWE Superstar, Summer Rae sat down with Ring the Belle’s DS Shin to countdown the top five moments according to fans. Rae, whose real name is Danielle Moinet, speaks on many topics while discussing these moments. She comments on her time in NXT, the infamous Rusev/Lana storyline, her feud with Layla, and her friendship with Sasha Banks and much more.

The formation of the faction BFF, which was listed as a top five moment, is where Moinet mentions she and Banks were and still are good friends. Shin capitalized from this moment by asking the hard-hitting question about the rumors circulating about Banks. Moinet seemingly confused was unaware of these rumors about her friend being unhappy and wanting to quit WWE.

While she doesn’t know anything about the aforementioned situation she says there were many rumors of herself going around when she was with WWE. After mentioning that everyone goes through things she mentions that she stays off the dirt sheets. Moinet feels a lot of information that is provided is hearsay and the dirt sheets aren’t right at all.

Her sentiment rings true in many situations. There are always two sides to every story. We certainly live in a world where a big game of telephone is what dictates the current social climate.

Watch the full video from Ring the Belle to find out the rest of the fans’ top five Summer Rae moments. She also speaks on the slap heard around the world on Total Divas and talks on if she plans to return to the ring. Thank you to DS Shin for making this exclusive interview happen.

10-Knockouts Gauntlet Match, TNA 11/14/11

Welcome to another Free Match Friday! This week it has been decided to keep with the IMPACT theme from last week. This time it will go back several more years to TNA where a gauntlet match was featured to determine the number one contender to Gail Kim’s Knockouts Championship.

Kim won the championship for the second time in her career the night prior at Turning Point. This title win occurred in a fatal-four way (also featured Madison Rayne and Mickie James) and Velvet Sky was the champion heading into the match. With the help of Karen Jarrett and Rayne, Kim planned for the winner of this Gauntlet match to be Rayne. Was Rayne successful in becoming the number one contender?

Take a look at this match to see if Rayne could pull off the victory to Kim’s satisfaction.

Laurel Van Ness vs. Jade, IMPACT Xplosion

Another week is coming to an end, so that can only mean one thing. Free Match Friday!

For this week’s Free Match Friday, let’s explore the six-sided ring of IMPACT Wrestling. With Madison Rayne on commentary, the match produced a level of high energy from both competitors. Laurel Van Ness ends up coming short but it wasn’t from a lack of heart.

Van Ness attempts to put away Jade with the curb stomp. Jade is able to avoid what would have inevitably been her fate and delivers a package pile driver. She attempted this move earlier in the match but was unable to execute it. Jade pins Van Ness for the win.

Check back in with Diva Dirt every Friday for a match to kick off your weekend!

Ashley & Trish Stratus vs. Candice Michelle & Victoria 01/23/06

This week for Free Match Friday, the Diva-Dirt staff wants to pay tribute to Ashley Massaro.

In this tag team match from early 2006, Trish Stratus was helping out the 2005 Diva Search winner. Stratus chose to team up with her against Candice Michelle and Victoria. Ashley was able to pick up the win for her team. She hit a high cross body off the top turnbuckle and came crashing down on Victoria for the pinfall victory.

This decision by Stratus to team with Ashley made Mickie James jealous and attacked Ashley after the match. James was infatuated with Stratus at the time and didn’t condone the attention Ashley was receiving.

What are your memories of this match and the storytelling surrounding it? What are some of your favorite Ashley matches? Let us know your memories of Ashley Massaro in the comment section!!

Mickie James releases new woman empowerment song

Mickie James is well known by wrestling fans due to her striking and technical abilities in the ring. Her accolades in the ring are proven by her many championship reigns throughout many promotions. Many “Hardcore Country” fans may already know of her activities outside of the ring. Her career as a country music singer is often overlooked.

James is a 20-year veteran on lacing up her wrestling boots, but few know that she also laces up her cowboy boots. She started releasing music in 2010 which makes her a 9-year country musician. As of last week, she has released a music video for her new song, “I Don’t Give A.”

In her video, she brings her sassy personality to light with a tune that empowers women to stand up for themselves. She brushes off a bar patron who attempts to hit on her with a “get your hands up off my shoulder” line that strikes down unwanted advances. This track has a perfect summertime feel for those who correlate their music to seasons.

Her music highlights a strong independent woman quality that she brings to her in-ring character as well. Past songs that encompass this feeling include “Hardcore Country” and “Somebody’s Gonna Pay.” While part of Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling she incorporated “Hardcore Country” as her entrance theme song.

The “Somebody’s Gonna Pay” music video features former WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus as a butt-kicking bartender and James’ now husband former TNA World Heavyweight Champion – Magnus.

What are your thoughts on Mickie James’ new song? Would you like WWE to incorporate her music more into her gimmick? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Gail Kim on Racism in Pro Wrestling

Gail does not hold back! Legendary Gail Kim Visits Ring the Belle to discuss her WWE Women’s Championship win on her debut night, her favorite matches against Awesome Kong and Taryn Terrell, and the racism and stereotypes in Pro Wrestling industry.

We met Gail Kim at the Early to Rise: Women’s Wrestling Mini Convention in Berwyn Illinois. It was amazing meeting my Korean hero for the first time. Please excuse me for asking way too many WWE questions. Ring the Belle respect Gail’s legacy in women’s wrestling history as a whole, not just WWE women’s division. We would love to have Gail again to dig deeper into her career in TNA Impact.

Huge thanks to RISE for inviting us to the Early to Rise Convention, and Gail Kim for speaking with us for an extended period of time, and we hope to meet you again!

Lana and Rusev to co-write comic book with Jason Starr

Lana and Rusev

In the latest episode from their vlogging channel, Lana and Rusev revealed that they will be co-writing their first comic book together. The comic book will be called Dark Country. Keeping the project under wraps, they declined to divulge anymore information apart from the title.

The WWE couple will be working on it with Jason Starr. Starr is perhaps best known for his work with both DC Comics and Marvel on works such as Wolverine Max and Punisher Max. Starr has also produced novels based on Marvel’s Ant Man character and DC/FOX show, Gotham.

Furthermore, the real life couple announced that they are holding a contest for aspiring comic book artist. In search of designers and artists to illustrate their story, Lana and Rusev suggest curious viewers to submit their portfolio to [email protected]. Winners for the paid opportunity will be chosen on May 15.

Considering the couple’s recent vocal frustrations with the company, it’s interesting to see them invest in non-WWE opportunities such as this. Perhaps it’s an attempt to add to their stock in case they do decide to walk away from WWE.

Stay tuned with Diva Dirt for future updates regarding winners for the contest and more details on the couple’s comic.

Allie written off Impact in controversial death scene

Allie

Last night, the latest AEW signee, Allie, ended her time with Impact in dramatic fashion. In her final appearance, her character was killed off when Su Yung stabbed her in the neck.

The “Against All Odds” special was the culmination of the Demon storyline. Rosemary brought Allie to “The Undead Realm” to save her soul. In the end, she sacrificed herself to save Rosemary, suffering a bloody death at the hands of Su Yung. The act of love reunited her with soul, making her whole again.

As previously reported, All Elite Wrestling confirmed Allie signed with the promotion in a recent episode of “Road to Double or Nothing.” This was the last of her tapings with Impact after they decided not to renew her contract. However, this goes to show there was no animosity here.

Allie even went to Twitter to express her satisfaction with how her time with the company ended.

https://twitter.com/AllieImpact/status/1111846053010198528
https://twitter.com/AllieImpact/status/1111846943242809344

There is some mixed reaction among fans, but this indicates how much Impact valued her contributions to the promotion. Wrestlers don’t always get a proper send-off, so it’s telling that they took the time to write her off and wrap up her story with Rosemary.

What did you think of “Against All Odds”? Are you excited to see what Allie will does next AEW? Drop a comment below.

Killer Kelly vs. Valkyrie at PWU’s Celtic Cup

Free Match Friday is a weekly feature from Diva Dirt. Every Friday, we’ll spotlight a great indie match available to watch for free online. Some of the best wrestling in the world is happening in high school gyms and sports bars and even, occasionally, in an appropriate venue for a wrestling match. This week, our free match is a terrific title match between Killer Kelly and Valkyrie at Pro Wrestling Ulster’s Celtic Cup.

It is my solemn belief that Killer Kelly and Valkyrie could wrestle each other for ten, fifteen or twenty years without turning in a bad match. That might seem a mad thing to say about two wrestlers who’ve only met twice in the ring. But they have such a fantastic natural ring chemistry that I’m certain they’ll only get better as time goes by.

We previously featured their stellar match at the German Wrestling Federation in this series, which I praised for its verisimilitude, the quality of appearing to be real. This week’s match, which saw Killer Kelly challenge Valkyrie for the PWU Women’s Championship, is a little different.

First and foremost, while booked as tweeners in their GWF match, here we have Valkyrie as the heel champ, as a member of the Rocky Starr Experience. Killer Kelly is the face and the crowd is one hundred percent on her side. The match is a picture perfect “coward vs hero” match, with Valkyrie spending long stretches of the match running away and even using a fan in a wheelchair as a human shield.

But where many “coward vs hero” matches end up frustrating and boring because of, well, the running away, this match never is. It uses just as much cowardly heel shenanigans as it needs to build just enough frustration that every strike Kelly lands on Valkyrie is like a huge cathartic release. And it lets Valkyrie be as crafty as she is cowardly, using her tactics to not just avoid damage but deliver it. Much like their first match, it’s by no means flashy, but it is a simply excellent iteration of a familiar genre. I can’t wait for the rubber match.

Check back in with Diva Dirt next week for another great free match from the world of independent women’s wrestling. You can find even more matches AND support independent women’s wrestling over at ClickWrestle.
