Netflix release official trailer for women’s wrestling series ‘GLOW’

Netflix

And now we have the first official full trailer for the series!

Executive produced by Orange Is The New Black creator Jenji Kohan, GLOW tells the tale of Ruth Wilder (Community’s Alison Brie), a failed actress that receives an audition for “unconventional women”. The role is for ‘Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.)’, a wrestling company for other “Hollywood misfits” somewhat like Wilder. Ruth finds herself some competition as former soap actress Debbie Eagan (American Gods‘ Betty Gilpin) joins the cast and is put in the spotlight.

The show also has Orange Is The New Black’s Carly Mensch and Homeland’s Liz Flahive as its creators.

For fans of women’s wrestling, WWE and TNA’s Awesome Kong (AKA Kia Stevens) will be playing the regular character of Tamee!

The trailer for the new comedy series can be viewed below:

The full cast list for the upcoming production is:

  • Ellen Wong
  • Britt Baron
  • Alison Brie
  • Kimmy Gatewood
  • Betty Gilpin
  • Rebekka Johnson
  • Laurie Francene Kinzer
  • Sunita Mani
  • Sydelle Noel

    I smell a WWE comeback!

  • Soo excited for this. I hope it becomes a success, Kong deserves it!

  • Jesus’s brother

Wow, it was actually good! I would love Kong back in WWE

  • Wrestling.fan.from.France

This looks so great! This may very well surpass the expectations. This looks very compelling and I hope that it ends up being a massive hit.

  • Asa Loves You

This is gonna be fantastic. Forget wrestling, Kia can reach a mainstream audience and gain recognition as an actress!

  • Summer_Slay #RespectTheDivas

This looks good to me the wrestling fan and i will probably watch it. But idk how non wrestling fans would react to it. And the fact that is supposed to take place in the 80s/90s is kinda not helping the show.

    • ThePeaceVibe.

The whole idea of 80’s is what helps the appeal of it for me.

    • jcott3

Fans seem to like Southpaw Regional Wrestling, which is a homage/parody of what wrestling was like in the 80’s, especially in the southern territories.

  • Robann

This looks great! Will definitely be watching it.

  • YonceLuvsDivas

Yesssss go head Kong! She slayed me in the trailer. I can definitely see her as an actress. She has the personality for it.

  • Monkey Tennis

Looks good. From first impressions, it doesn’t seem like the series is going to portray any of the real people behind GLOW or the wrestlers themselves, but instead just use characters based on them. But that’s cool, as it obviously opens up more avenues for storytelling.

As long as we still get the songs.

I used to fast-forward through all those cringe-worthy raps they did for their entrance themes (GLOW was on opposite the WWF in my area, so I would tape GLOW to watch it later).

I’m sure there are rights and likeness issues that prevent them from using the characters from back in the day, but Kong would easily be the in-universe equivalent of Matilda the Hun or Mountain Fiji, or Big Bad Mama from the later GLOW years.

Either way, I would love for them to get Lisa Moretti (aka Ivory, or original GLOW girl Tina Ferrari) to appear in this. Maybe make her the equivalent of Aunt Kitty, the old woman who used to manage the heels.

Oh my god this looks great! June 23rd will soon here here too! ??

  • A new path for Kia to succeed in and also branch out into. Honestly I’m really looking forward to this

  • Darren C. #Anti-Marks ?

I totally can see Maryse, Bellas, Kelly, Eve, Eve, Trish, Eve, and Lita making some appearance.

  • Cilla

    This looks good.

  • Gabriella Panajotova

Looks pretty darn good. I can’t be the only one that thinks 80s are doing Kong justice in the glam up department. She looks great!

  • The trailer is lit??

  • MiguelAngl

    Kia looks beautiful

  • ThePeaceVibe.

I am so ready for this!

  • Raekon

Can’t wait to watch it! :D

  • EYECON

Ummmm not what I was expecting …lol but to be honest this looks so bad I actually really want to see

    • jcott3

GLOW never took itself seriously in the 80’s (they fully embraced the “it’s all entertainment” approach at a time when kayfabe was still in full effect in the wrestling business) and used to have a laugh track on some of the between-match skits. I remember Ivory once describing GLOW as “wrestling’s version of Hee-Haw”.
