Writers’ Choice Awards 2013: Match of the Year – Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell in a Last Knockout Standing Match

Diva Dirt presents its third annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, followed a countless number of wrestlers and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2013, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice trophies.

Best Match: Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell in a Last Knockout Standing Match

TNA’s Knockouts division has had a rocky 2013. The division was flourishing at the beginning of the year after Velvet Sky won back the belt in the United Kingdom, Mickie James turned heel and became the most decorated women’s wrestler in television history and the company even taped an all-female Pay-Per-View event back in March.

However, financial difficulties crippled the division, with TNA letting go Vice President of the Knockouts Brooke Hogan, record-tying five-time Knockouts Champion Tara, Madison Rayne while she was pregnant and up-and-comer Taeler Hendrix. On top of that, Mickie James’s contract expired while she was the Knockouts Champion. All of this was sitting on the horizon, but that didn’t stop the original Knockouts Champion and a plucky ex-Diva from stealing the show, creating the Match of the Year in the process.

It was June 2nd at TNA’s Slammiversary pay-per-view. Seasoned grappler Gail Kim and rough-around-the-edges Taryn Terrell has been feuding for a few months after Gail disrespected Taryn’s authority, who was the Knockouts referee at the time.

Taryn had caused Gail to get pinned by Velvet Sky in February, costing Gail championship glory. The pair fought backstage and has nasty catfights in the ring, all leading to this event. The match was a Last Knockout Standing match, yet after it, it was the entire audience and fans at home who were on their feet, applauding the efforts of both combatants.

The girls utilized high flying offense, intricate submissions and of course, they got the weapons out! Taryn made enemies with the entrance ramp, Gail puckered up for a steel chair (and it wasn’t a pleasant kiss!) and the match ended with Taryn hitting Gail with a running cutter off the ramp. The fans were in awe, the audience at home were in shock and the match was critically acclaimed, and rightfully so.

The two went on to have a Ladder match later in the year, yet it was this match that stood out the most. Gail proved that her career is far from over and Taryn demonstrated how very wrong WWE were to let her go. The girls created some monumental moments, told a fantastic story and both proved that there is more than enough life left in the Knockouts division.

Stay tuned for more Writers’ Choice Award reveals over the next few days.

  • AJ IS A WRESTLING GOD

Somebody put me in a match with OJ cause he talk to much for me, plus he has a knife in his avi. I think this match right here was awesome though! Taryn really showed herself off

  • Sass.

Is that a WWE logo on the bottom of Taryn’s boot?

    • LIGHTSOUT

Lol, it really looks like one

    • RadicalRhys

No it isn’t, but it really does look like it.

  • Sass.

I think it was between AJ/Kaitlyn at Payback and this match for MOTY, and tbh; I think this one just wins it. There was so many awesome spots, the feedback from the IWC was incredible and the crowd were SO in to it.

    • BorisG

      It was even on TMZ.

  • jen07201

I was so surprised with this match and props to both Gail and Taryn for going all out in this match

  • LIGHTSOUT

    Well deserved

  • Monkey Tennis

This was a very good match, but that does have to be quantified with the addendum “…by TNA’s standards”.

Were there better matches wrestled elsewhere this year? Of course there were, from Viper and Kay Lee Ray’s match for the ICW:FF title back in May…Or the incredible contest between Madison Eagles and Jessie McKay at Shimmer 53. And so, so many more.

But naturally, these are matches not everyone will have seen and so it’s inevitable any match of the year award at Diva Dirt would go to either WWE or TNA. On that criteria, I’m on the fence as to whether this was a better match than AJ and Kaitlyn at Payback. Obviously this was the ‘showier’ match, plus it had the added ‘novelty’ of Taryn’s improvement that surprised a few people. But on it’s own merits. is it the better match?

I honestly don’t know. I’d have to call this one a tie.

    • RadicalRhys

I think this was for their televised match of the year, so matches from ICW:FF, SHIMMER, Shine, etc etc dont really count, at least in this version of their writing picks.

    • BorisG

This was televised match of the year and for your information not all of us follow indies like you do.

      • Monkey Tennis

To be fair, there’s no reference in the article that specifically states this is ‘televised’ match of the year. And I made a point of addressing the fact that not everyone either chooses to watch the indies, or has access to do so.

Besides, it’s all irrelevant anyway. Cos Paige vs either Emma or Natalya were obviously the best televised wrestling matches this year.

    • Thurman powers

Well actually the writers at Diva dirt are more hardcore Indy fans than WWE or TNA. every week and Indy match is match of the week.

Coupled on top of the fact the five to watch has been all Indy talent.

Also Aj vs Kaitlyn was good but not on this matches level.

  • James the supreme witch

This match was just so amazing. So many awesome intense spots. Both girls gave it their alls clearly. This is my choice for MOTY. We all know its between this and Kaitlyn vs Aj

  • ChloeMatthews

This match was definitely the match of the year. These ladies proved that women’s wrestling is much more than some punches, and a cross body. Kaitlyn/AJ @ Payback could have been a good candidate for MOTY, but this one was more intense and memorable. Taryn had perfected her improvements, and Gail continued to show why she could possibly be one of the greatest women wrestlers of all-time. AWESOME match!

    • BorisG

This match was just perfect, it took women’s wrestling to another direction.

      • ChloeMatthews

        Agreed completely!

    • zinc445 .

I agree. Aj and kaitlyn needed a stip i think their feud became so intense and personal a stipulation would of hyped it up so much … Like a hardcore match . But it didnt happen n tna gave us LKS and ladder, i think thats where credit is due the time a effort they gave to the ko and specifically taryn

      • ChloeMatthews

        I fully agree.

  • AdrianRay

Watched this match last night…and it really doesn’t deserve the title of “Match of the Year”. It was an awesome match, but it consisted of five “crazy, intense” spots and a series of elbows. The girls deserve credit, of course, but overall the match should have consisted of a tad bit more wrestling.

    • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

This^^… But watch out Knockout fans would say we are bias over divas.

      • AdrianRay

        Shut up.

        • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

          You shut up ….. lmao

    • kewlkatz

‘Watched this match last night’… I smell a deever mark. If you couldn’t find the effort over the past 6 months to watch one of the most critically-acclaimed women’s matches in years, I’m questioning your ability to judge impartially.

      • AdrianRay

I’ve seen the match plenty of times you twit. I went back and watched all the “Match of the Year” nominations over again. Please be aware that you know nothing of me, so don’t act as though I’m a “mark” of any sort. You’re a complete moron, and from now on that’s how you’ll be branded. Congrats.

        • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

          ???.
People always have some smart to say..

          • AdrianRay

            Shut up. LMAO ;)

        • kewlkatz

Not my fault you fail to communicate properly. One would think to type ‘Watched this match AGAIN last night’.

          • AdrianRay

What’s the point? I’m not trying to allude to the fact that I’ve seen the match countless times. Me seeing it once can garner an opinion. You want to continue looking foolish…or…

          • kewlkatz

The only thing foolish here is you expecting people to know what you do despite your awful communication skills. And it’s not my fault your clearly negatively biased and sarcastic interpretation of the match would make me form an opinion on yourself, Mr. Mark.

          • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

Why are you even commenting on his stuff? You must be desperate looking for the littlest things and start a arguement.Get a life.

          • kewlkatz

Why are you commenting on my stuff?
            GO AWAY

          • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

Cause your so smart ass and you need to get checked.

          • kewlkatz

            Slammiversary >>>>> Payback

    • AdrianRay

I’ll leave my first comment because I have no shame in being slightly wrong. I ALWAYS forget that this match was billed as a “Last Knockout Standing” match. It deserves credit, it very well does. It being filled with those spots was fine, since that’s all you really do in a “Last Standing Match”. I still don’t think it’s “Match of the Year”, but I believe it does deserve it. We will see!

    • wwepassion

No match was better then this.

  • Juan

Definitely match of the year without a doubt!!

  • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

This can’t beat A.J vs Kaitlyn!

    • kewlkatz

      but it just did…

      • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

I’m talking about the awards we voted smart ass.

    • RadicalRhys

Obviously it did considering this is what the DD writer believed to be their match of the year.

      • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

This isn’t the original awards we voted.

        • RadicalRhys

That’s what I said, this is the ‘Writer’s Choice Awards’. Maybe AJ VS Kaitlyn will win the fan votes, they most likely will since it was a great match for Divas standards, and more people watch WWE as a whole. Or maybe we’ll get shocked and another match will win, maybe this one? Maybe not. We’ll soon see when the results are shown.

          • Juan

You never know. Im hoping the LKS match gets the win for the fan vote too! But usually divas matches win it because there are more divas fans.

    • BorisG

Well here it did, but we’ll see how the fans voted.

      • zinc445 .

Fans are biased here aj and kaitlyn will get it, but im glad taryn and gails match was picked here by DD it shows that when it comes down to it slammy was better. Its opinion but by most standards gail and taryns match was Amazingly better. But if it makes some feel better payback was the best divas match this year, then probably tlc, then probably eve v kailtyn for only wwe. Tna wise LKS then ladder match, gail v mickie, velvet v mickie. The list carries on with tna because their matches tend to be exciting

        • BorisG

Last KO Standing was definitely better than AJ vs Kaitlyn, and I can say that Taryn vs Gail Ladder match was better than it too.

          • zinc445 .

yeah! ladder was probably better, but if it was on ppv the atmosphere would be different. well try telling ppl who seem to think aj v kailtyn was amazingly better, it was good but it lacked quality like a stipulation would of hyped it better.

  • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

But this was a great match and both ladies put their all so I respect them.

  • kewlkatz

Yup, definite MOTY, no question. The consensus around the general wrestling community regarding this debate about the Payback match was that the L. K. S. was better, and it’s my personal opinion that it was better too.

    • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

OK you can have your opinion. We don’t need you saying LKS was better. We know that..

      • kewlkatz

Wait, are you saying you know that the LKS match was better or that you know what my opinion about it is? Either way…

        Slammiversary >>>>> Payback
I can say what i want

        • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

I’m being smart ass just like you are.

          Payback >>>>>> Slammiversary .
I can also say what I want.

          • wwepassion

            Slammiversary>>>>>Payback!

          • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

            K.Good Job.

          • wwepassion

            Thanks!!!

  • BorisG

Match was great and definitely deserved the award. It was better than most men’s matches this year.

  • Thurman powers

I have no problem with this match being MOTY. I would have thought just based off this performance alone Taryn would be a shoe win for most improved..yet Brie won. Ok sure.

    Congrats Gail and Taryn.

    • BorisG

Taryn did improve great, even she haven’t wrestled for 2 years before that.

      • wwepassion

I think Taryn was always good. She had good matches in wwe.

        • kewlkatz

She looked good in her showings in the WWE, but back then could you even imagine her name being mentioned in the same breath as ‘Match of the Year’.

          • wwepassion

She got fired to quick. So i don’t know.

        • Thurman powers

Her FCW matches were some of her best.

          • wwepassion

Yea they were. I wish she didn’t get fired.

          • Thurman powers

Why did she get fired I forgot?

          • BorisG

Because she attacked her then husband Drew McIntyre in a hotel, like she was so mad. Then she got suspended and when she was set to return she was released.

          • Thurman powers

Right and look how Drew’s career turned out. He shouldn’t have gotten her fired. Now she’s in TNA making history and he’s in WWE jobbing to the great khali.

Karma is a …well you get the rest lol.

          • BorisG

            IKR lol.

          • wwepassion

Because she beat up her now ex husband Drew Mcintyre.

      • Thurman powers

Exactly she wasn’t in ring for a while. Well she was as a referee but when she got back in the ring she proved she can go with the best.

I wonder if she hadn’t been released from WWE so soon how she would have turned out.

        • BorisG

I wonder that too. She had all the tools and Diva look they like. But when she returns KO gold is waiting for her.

          • Thurman powers

Is she out with an injury?

          • BorisG

            She’s pregnant.

          • Thurman powers

Whoa, had no idea. Hopefully she can balance motherhood and being a wrestler. If she doesn’t return I’d be disappointed.

          • BorisG

Well Madison did return only about two months after her pregnancy.

    • QueenAliciaFox

I agree with you, Brie improved but Taryn improved way more

      • Thurman powers

Especially seeing as Taryn was a referee for almost two years.

  • wwepassion

This match was the best for sure. Nothing comes close to it. I did like Paige and Emma’s ‘match too.

    • QueenAliciaFox

Me too, Emma and Paige have everything to be sucefful in WWE
Paoge has the looks, carisma, she can do it at the ring and as a good micro habilate
Emma the same but she needs to do more with her caracter and work more at the micro

      • wwepassion

They are gonna have the best feuds along with summer Etc. I think Emma needs to do more then the dance just to see how good she is in different roles.

        • QueenAliciaFox

Me too, that gimick in one or two more year will be way boring

          • wwepassion

            Agree.

  • The Diva Of Greatness

I like the ladder match between Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell.

    • QueenAliciaFox

Me too, for me the ladder match was better but this was very good also

      • The Diva Of Greatness

I never saw the PPV match but the ladder match was excellent.

  • HOLLA

    Agree completely!!

  • Thurman powers

In the main picture it looks like Gail is giving her an air backbreaker..anybody else see that?

  • Christopher Bello

Gail Kim is seriously one of the greatesf WRESTLERS of ALL TIME, PERIOD.

  • nismos69

Meh, ill take it! I loved this match, i was so suprised because i was so pissed that mickie wasnt on the card! But this impressed me so much, Tarryn and Gail impressed me so much! This is a match i’ll never forget, and that goes for Kaitlynvs Aj too!

  • https://twitter.com/_EricHolt_ She’sGotLegs!

Anytime a match is gonna get some sort of media coverage, you know that it was a good match. Gail and Taryn stole the show that night for me. Very proud of both girl for putting on a match, and Taryn showed the world that she was there to wrestle and that she’s more than a pretty face.

  • redsandman99

This one from the moment I saw it went up in my top five favorite KO matches that I’ve ever seen.

  • Raekon

Televised match of the year for me.
A overall match of the year should belong to the Indies and not TNA or WWE.

  • CrazyGirlAJ (#ChickBusters)

They will still show us the results but they did their own version. It has nothing to do with our awards :).
