Now onto the Top TWO spots!
2. WrestleMania 39
Rhea Ripley def. Charlotte Flair (c) – SmackDown Women’s Champion
This match still has me emotional when I go back to watch it. It was a truly amazing match that is going to be hard to ever top. The issue with going into this match is there was no build. Both women’s title matches at this Mania (Asuka vs. Bianca Belair) had no build and no hype behind them. BUT, this particular match, I just can’t put into words how good it was.
Flair also losing here was 100% the right call. I know Flair took a hiatus after this, so that may be part of the reason why she dropped the title, but it certainly did a lot for Ripley’s career! There was more storytelling through the match than the lead up to it, which is surprising because the two had met previously at WrestleMania 36, and although it was brought it, it should have been more of a focus. The ending with the avalanche Riptide off the second rope…fantastic. That was something that had to be done to put away someone like Flair believably.
The match has nearly six million views on YouTube.
- WrestleMania 37
Bianca Belair def. Sasha Banks (c) – SmackDown Women’s Championship
What can I say? I have been to two WrestleMania’s so far in my life. One was WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans, and the other one was this one, in my home city of Tampa. And after COVID took WrestleMania 36 from me, I was very happy to see it at WrestleMania 37. Being there, witnessing this historical match still brings tears to my eyes. I have only rewatched this match a few times, which one may think why? Because I was there. And nothing will EVER be as good as I felt being there and seeing it right in front of me.
Two Black women for the FIRST time ever to main event WrestleMania. Two of only Five women to have ever main evented a WrestleMania. And the match held up to the hype! The tears at the beginning of the match left me in the crowd, tearing up myself. Bianca with her strength, Sasha with her mind games, both with their agility…this match had everything. A top tier match brings out the crowds emotion, and these two women did that. A memory as a women’s wrestling fan that we will never, ever forget.
