Mandy Rose retains the NXT Women’s Title as Io Shirai stands with Kay Lee Ray; Dusty Tag Team Classic begins in two weeks

This week’s NXT 2.0 had three women’s matches on the card and a championship bout that was showcased in the main event.

Kay Lee Ray was determined as ever to become the new NXT Women’s Champion on last night’s show. So much show that she didn’t want to wait to get her hands on Rose next week at Vengeance Day and wanted the title match a week early.

Before the match, it seemed to be a one-on-one affair as Toxic Attraction (Jacy Jayne & Gigi Dolin) was attacked backstage as the trio were making their way to the ring for the main event. Jayne & Dolin’s opponents for next week, Indi Hartwell and Persia Pirotta brawled with them backstage leading to Rose having to go at her match completely alone.

During the match, a backstage report from McKenzie Mitchell indicated that both Toxic Attraction and Hartwell/Pirotta were escorted out of the building from their brawl. Moments away from possibly winning the gold, KLR went up top to deliver a final blow to Rose but it turned out that Toxic Attraction was still around as Jayne jumped on the ring apron and tried to make her way into the ring. The official stopped her while Dolin knocked KLR off the turnbuckle. Rose capitalized with a running knee to get the pin and retain her title.

After the match, with KLR’s bat in the hands of Jayne, the trio targeted the fallen opponent. Io Shirai‘s music hit and the Genius of the Sky made a rush to the ring to save KLR. KLR back up delivered a KLR bomb to Rose to send the final message as she and Shirai stood tall to end the show.

Other matches on this week’s show had the following results –

Tiffany Stratton defeated Wendy Choo

Sarray defeated Dakota Kai

With a storyline of Choo stealing “Daddy’s Credit Card” from Stratton, Choo took Amari Miller on a shopping spree. A trip that Stratton promised Miller if she beat Choo last week, but Choo was the victor in that match. Now wanting the credit card back, Stratton battled Choo and came out with victory. After breaking a nail, Stratton unleashes a series of attacks in the corner before hitting an impressive corkscrew move off of the bottom rope to get the pin.

Stratton is back in the win column after falling to Io Shirai in her last match.

Next up were Dakota Kai and Sarray.

Building to this bout was Kai mocking the reimaged Sarray who has more confidence than ever. There were definitely some timing issues in this match that made it clunky but in the end Sarray would continue her successful return and pick up another win.

Other moment’s from this week for the women include a new promo for the debuting Nikkita Lyons, a backstage moment with Brooks Jensen asking out Kayden Carter for Valentine’s Day, and a backstage segment between the teams of Yulisa Leon/Valentina Feroz and Raquel Gonzalez/Cora Jade as the women’s Dusty Classic is looming.

It was confirmed in this backstage interview that the Dusty Tag Team Classic for the women begins in two weeks. The brackets will likely be revealed next week at Vengeance Day.

At Vengeance Day next Tuesday, the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles will be defended as Toxic Attraction faces Indi Hartwell and Persia Pirotta. Who will the champs be as the Dusty Cup kicks off? The winners earn a title shot.
